Stephen King's IT Pushes Beyond Quaint TV Memories
Growing up, I loved Stephen King novels. To say I devoured them is an understatement. That kid in the Monster Squad movie with the red T shirt? May as well have been me..minus the monster fighting. They were my buddies. While the movie adaptions of King's books started off strong, there are a handful of misses that often overshadow the good. I like to think the TV adaption for IT lands somewhere in the middle, triggering a horror fan's nostalgia and a love of all things Tim Curry dominating over the plodding pace, odd grown up reunion and devastatingly unscary finale.
Now..Warner Bros' New Line Cinema feature film looks to trigger your fear reflex. There's so much packed into IT that should scare the holy hell out of anyone reading, and so, the movie adaption should make a select few run from the theater weeping. WE CAN HOPE!! Check out the first teaser below...

Anne Rice Recovers Rights to the Vampire Chronicles
It's been years since the vampire Lestat sought to teach Louis about the night and all its beauty. For some, the film was amazing. For others, it was miscast and void of all the magic that propelled the reader through every book. As we moved into the second installment, it was clear the new film's creators didn't "get" the author's material and the result was an odd mess best left to midnight screenings and a cult movie status. Hollywood has always had an uneasy relationship with authors and even producers that expound on their love for the source material sometimes turn out an adaption that makes us question if they really read the book at all. When the party is over, we are left to wonder what the author can do to reclaim their written necromancy. Today, we live in the age of second chances, and Anne Rice is ready to bring her pale children before us once more...

Dark Horse Catches Reefer Madness
Now that 3 states have legalized it for recreational use, 19 for medical use, and with legalization on the November ballot in 5, it is especially fun to relive the hysteria surrounding marijuana as a perceived gateway drug from the 1930's to the 1950's and beyond. And now you can do so in the comfort of your home with Reefer Madness from Dark Horse Books.
Like the anti-drug propaganda films of that era, these stories range from comically misinformed to soberly concerned about the influence of Mary Jane on the youth of America. With titles like Teenage Dope Slaves, Satan’s Cigarettes, and Hopped-Up Killer, the gulf in attitudes between today and the days of Reefer Madness could not be wider.

Dynamite Entertainment's The Art of Atari Deluxe Edition
Art books seem to be on the rise again as publishers cash in on a geeky public's frenzied nostalgia with weighty tomes and equally weighty price tags. Subjects have run the gamete, hitting all corners of our pop culture universe...which makes it doubly odd we've not had a show stopping tribute to Atari before! Dynamite Entertainment (most known for comics conveying the adventures of Red Sonja and Ash of the Evil Dead) seeks to rectify that great injustice with the Art of Atari.
ART OF ATARI represents the most comprehensive retrospective to date, a whopping 350+ pages that provides insightful history and high-resolution scanned artwork culled from hundreds of production/concept illustrations, photographs, video game packaging, and groundbreaking advertisements from the height of Atari's innovation and popularity.

Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Tim Burton takes a lot of lumps for his art..from me, and other critics, both professional and of the fan variety. Draining the wonder from Wonderland and replacing it with a sort of fantasy version of a post apocalyptic wasteland, while wildly imaginative, was not exactly what those seeking light Disney fare were looking for, and on the other end of the spectrum, stuck an odd chord with Burton die hards. Yes, the dark angle is expected, but it's a "spooky" dark Burton build his empire upon, draped with whimsical music, near slapstick comedy and an overall charm that would instantly win over the hearts of those who wish it to be Halloween, eternally. Dark Shadows seemed a perfect playground for Burton's gothic trappings, but the film was mired in it's own failed comedy and remains a topic...most fans care not to discuss. Now comes Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children which, again, seems like the right job for the right man with amazing hair, and you'll be happy to note, it's got the right trailer too!

KDD AUTHORS AT SDCC 2015
Jason Blum is an Emmy Award-winning producer who has ushered in a new dawn of horror with franchises like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, and Sinister. Now he presents THE BLUMHOUSE BOOK OF NIGHTMARES: THE HAUNTED CITY (Doubleday, 7/7/2015) a stunning collection of original, terrifying fiction from a unique cast of 16 master storytellers including Eli Roth, Ethan Hawke, James DeMonaco, Mark Neveldine, Dana Stevens, Jeremy Slater, Scott Derrickson, and C. Robert Cargill. These provocative stories create the unforgettable cityscape for a new world of horror.
Kevin Keating has received starred reviews for THE CAPTIVE CONDITION (Pantheon Books, 7/7/2015), including this from Library Journal “A weird and wonderfully rendered universe . . . . A highly literary look at the faces of evil in almost all of its guises . . . . Oh, and many characters here are constantly high on psychedelic carrot juice.” Emulating a modern day Edgar Allan Poe, coupled with the creepy brilliance of HBO’s True Detective, THE CAPTIVE CONDITION is at once chilling, deliciously dark, and quirkily hilarious. As a boilermaker turned author, Kevin has a fascinating and unique take on thriller writing. Kevin appears on the Horror/Thriller panel on Thursday, July 9 at 4 pm (Room 25ABC).

Top Shelf's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Graphic Novel
Legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson's genius was rooted in his ability to blend reality with fiction, serious cultural analysis with madcap escapades, astonishing words with unforgettable images. In that spirit, and in proud partnership with the Thompson estate, Top Shelf Productions is pleased to announce Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a delightfully bonkers graphic novel by Eisner-nominated artist Troy Little adapting Thompson's book of the same name.
"I'm so pleased that one of the first collaborative projects to come out of the Top Shelf / IDW relationship will be Troy Little's inspired take on a true classic of American literature," said Top Shelf Editor-In-Chief Chris Staros. "One of the most unforgettable writers turned loose in one of my favorite cities! We can't wait to show you what Troy's done with it."

Figure Fantasy: The Pop Culture Photography of Daniel Picard
Figure Fantasy: The Pop Culture Photography of Daniel Picard is a wholly unique collection of meticulously composed images, showcasing a variety of comic book and movie icons in realistic and often hilarious everyday settings. Canadian photographer Daniel Picard composes his comedic and artistic images using a mix of real-world photography and fantasy, resulting in a collection that actor Simon Pegg calls “a wonderful conversation piece.” Picard photographs 12-inch figures from Sideshow Collectibles, then arranges them in to-scale environments, using classic heroes and villains to create believable scenes and tongue-in-cheek parodies.
