COGS Steampunk Expo Rises from the Ashes

To quote Spike from Notting Hill, "I'm going to tell you a story that will make your balls shrink to the size of raisins." There once was an event called the Steampunk World's Fair. Like many events in the New Jersey area, SPWF was run by seemingly nice people who also appeared to be hopelessly befuddled at every turn. At the best of times, most show operation was chaos, with many an unhappy vendor and volunteer. Speaking of volunteers, also like a lot of New Jersey conventions, SPWF relied heavily on a steady stream of volunteer help to run just about everything, including those things they probably should not. It became clear to most that these volunteers were also highly expendable.

E3 2016: Dishonored 2 Promises To Chill The Soul

by Justin DePaul

In what seemed to be one of the few actual gameplay demos shown at Bethesda's E3 presentation, Arkane Studios' Dishonored 2 was showcased, said to be arriving in stores on November 11th of this year. The sequel to the 2012 stealth/action game Dishonored puts us back with Royal Protector Corvo Attano in the city of Dunwall, but branches out with a new character Emperess Emily Kaldwin in the city of Karnaca, allowing for expanded and varied gameplay styles and a much larger world.

Game Show Network's "Steampunk'd"

No, it's not about Victorian era mad scientists who prank each other...though I'd watch the hell out of that.

Fantasia 2013: Frankenstein's Army Review

The idea is a familiar one, especially to those who have been attending conventions for over 10 years. The Nazis were a sadistic group of madmen and murderers, dabbling with the occult and exploring every mythological avenue to achieve their end game. Enter a group of Russian soldiers being filmed to inspire the populace (found footage WW2 movie!!), sent to back up a squad in a nearby skirmish. When they arrive, the bodies are plentiful, but the Russian troops are nowhere to be found. As the crew explores the town, they tread where they clearly should not…and activate machines they obviously should have kept their damn hands off of! In typical horror movie fashion, one turn of a crank and flick of a switch sets things in motion and the fun begins!!! It is hard for me to put into words the sheer level of awesome put up there on the screen. Metal goliaths with pincer claws. Stilt walking, gas masked creatures with drills where their face should be. It’s as if a sadistic 12 year old was told to take industrial tools and attach them to zombies in a series of crayon drawings..and that kid sat there until every variation was exhausted. Inspiring!

Professor Elemental - I'm Brittish

No snow today, but quite a bit of wet, which makes me long for my days of intense stomach pains from bad food, unruly weather and bitter, bitter cold as we stood alongside some old rocks. Yes, I speak of my adventure to the UK...where people reroute for a peacock in the road and you aren't allowed to have water with lunch at the pub. It's just not done. Here's a message from one of our favorite Brits; Professor Elemental, who would like to play you a jaunty little tune...

"Well hello. To counter this dark, wintery drudge we find ourselves wedged inside, may we offer a little splendid summer sunshine - the first single from the BRAND NEW Professor Elemental album, 'Father Of Invention'. Steampunk World's Fair 2011

Waaaaay behind on getting the events up, so please excuse me. Now that summer is in full swing and the cons are..well..practically every weekend, I'll be dedicating more time to them. That said, let's talk about the Steampunk World's Fair!

Top hats. Top hats everywhere. ...and goggles. Soooo many goggles. This is what I expected of the local steampunk extravaganza and I was not disappointed, but there was more! This event boasts the largest gathering of people in costume I've ever seen. Among these dedicated ladies and gents, even those not in costume are welcomed by smiling faces around every corner. There is zero attitude at this show! Also equally important to mention, every vendor was pleasant, helpful and happy to chat. This makes the entire experience better thank 90% of the shows I've been to in my life.

The layout of this show (though I hear it was somewhat unintentional) saw the vendors in every nook and cranny of the building, allowing you to casually walk the hallways and peek in doors to see who had what. What was found was the expected in top hats of all shapes and sizes as well as home made weapons of low tech scifi destruction, as well as the unexpected hand made clothing, jewelry, crafts, authors and musicians. Speaking of performers, those were also around every corner! In the courtyard, you could listen to a band, watch dancers and see a man hammer a nail into his head all at the same time. Spots around the floor were designated for performers as well, so you could pass one just heading to an exit. On a grander scale, two stages played host to performers as well..some just singing and strutting their stuff and some accompanied by a hula hooping stripper. This is the "more bang for your buck" most other shows are lacking.

So in a day, I watched a full on brass band tear up some rock and roll, watched a dude run a spike through his face and met lots of awesome people who had to have been sweating up a storm in their 15 layers of steampunk trappings...except for steampunk Boba Fett who was apparently raptured and thus, left his gear in a lump in the lobby. We wish him well.

CLICK HERE for a heaping stack of images from the show! Special thanks to Jeff Mach and his crew who rolled with every punch and pulled off an excellent event.
