Good Lord. Adult Swim has always swung wildly between "this show is insane, I can't stop laughing" to "this show is insane...my eyes are bleeding..wait..no, everything is bleeding." Rick and Morty is one of those shows where, after you are done laughing uncontrollably..like a hysterical person.. you sit there and ponder what level genius you need to be to come up with the situations, dialogue and visuals they create. If you're like me, this process involves shaking your fist at the sky in envy. Where the first season was noteworthy and certainly talked about far and wide, the second season was transcendent of its often overlooked medium. An episode goes from odd to wildly amusing to heart rippingly dramatic in seconds...AND THAT WAS THE FIRST EPISODE!! Point of fact, the first episode of season two entitled "A Rickle in Time" is so brilliant, it nearly challenges the viewer to watch it over and over just to take it all in. Could I gush any further? I think not.
Highlights of the rest of season 2's offerings include the revelation that Rick's car runs on energy created by tiny beings in an alternate universe he created, the Earth getting sucked into an interstellar battle of the bands and a quick detour to a backwater planet where the inhabitants are about to celebrate their purge night. Oh...and they are cat people. CATS WHO PURGE EACH OTHER. If that doesn't sell it for you, you are probably waiting frantically for the next season of Outlander, and while that's fine, we are of different minds.
Generally we cheer for the coming of a complete season of an Adult Swim cartoon and the wonderful extras that will inevitably be packed into the Blu-ray, but Rick and Morty Season 2 is a little light in this area. Well maybe light is the wrong word. It's pretty much a one trick pony. One bonus feature takes us front and center to watch a band play at a season premiere party. Basically, a very decent band plays while 3 people dance and someone off camera draws penises on a tablet projected behind the band. Dare your friends to watch for as long as they can. Yay. All I could think was "Rick would fucking hate this party". I-rons. You'll find animatics for every episode, which deviate somewhat from the regular episodes. If you are HARDCORE, I suppose these are awesome...but I'd just watched the entire season to get pumped for the review and I really didn't want to watch it all again, so the novelty was lost on me. Go into "episodes" and you'll find commentary tracks for the lot. The episodes are waaay funnier than the commentary tracks, but again, it's hardcore fan stuff with thoughts on what the creators were thinking when they created every minute...so..yea..it's there. The best feature of the set? IT'S ALL UNCENSORED!! Rick and Morty is awesome. Rick and Morty where you can hear everyone cursing is 100 times better. Second best feature of the set? A PLUMBUS OWNER'S MANUAL!!! A really for real one..on real paper. Amazing.
So..yea..you must own this..and we'll help you achieve your dream. Hop into the comments below and yell your favorite Rick and Morty line, no matter how mentally scarring it will be for the "normal" folks who happen upon this article by accident. I'll pick one of you at random and YOU will be blessed with a shiny new Rick and Morty Season 2 set on Blu-ray (or maybe dvd if you don't have Blu. I think we can make that happen.) Your deadline is 6-14. GOOD LUCK!!
"We don't whitewash it either, Morty. I mean, the pirates are really rapey."
