Teen Titans: The Judas Contract!
A little back story... Marv Wolfman and George Perez left Marvel Comics and hopped over to DC and immediately made their mark. The pair elevated the Teen Titans from being mere former sidekicks to starkly human beings with all the trauma, angst and weight that would sit on the shoulders of a young adult with tremendous power and the sense of responsibility to use that power for good. The Judas Contract was seen as the pinnacle of their work so, of course, a natural selection for an incredible animated film.
The film makers thought this story line would work perfectly in their already established animated film universe, with little changes here and there and an altered Titans roster including Damien as Robin and Blue Beetle. The film makers say the story is "inspired by" the original work, rather than saying it is "based on" the comics. The story was given a more contemporary tone and feel to be more accessible to today's audience.
Lead bad guys include Brother Blood, backed by Mother Mayhem and HIVE. Brother Blood believes that, by sapping the powers of the Teen Titans and transferring them into himself through a mix of blood magic and technology, he could become a god. He's been attempting this for hundreds of years, so you might say, anyone that stands in his way will not be met with kindness. Blood employs master assasin Deathstroke to aid in the Titans' capture.
In this story, Deathstroke is a former League of Assassins member, hoping to rise through the ranks and eventually to take Ra's al Ghul's place as leader until Ra's selects Damien as his successor. Ras dies at Deathstroke's hands and Damien takes his eye in battle. Might be a bit of a grudge there.
We also get the expected introduction of Terra, revisit her troubled past as her powers manifest and she's accused of being a witch. It's unclear as what point Deathstroke steps in but from the footage, it's suggested he saves her and starts to groom her immediately. What happens next is no mystery to even those that watched the old Teen Titans animated series, but the film makers promise that even those of us who know the story well may be surprised at the story's twists and turns...or maybe one big one!
The film stars Christina Ricci (Terra), Miguel Ferrer (Deathstroke) and Gregg Henry (Brother Blood), alongside returning Titans Sean Maher (Nightwing), Kari Wahlgren (Starfire), Jake T. Austin (Blue Beetle), Taissa Farmiga (Raven), Brandon Soo Hoo (Beast Boy) and Stuart Allan (Robin).
Oh yea...and Kevin Smith as Himself!!
