Diamond's Marvel Select Gambit

On one hand, this is THE BEST Gambit figure ever made. Seriously, a work of art by the incredibly talented Jean St. Jean! On the other hand, this is the part where I cry about Diamond Select's 7 inch format being out of scale with all but their own line, so the choice is wasted when there are legions of Marvel Legends fans who would buy hordes of bigger characters like the previously announced Juggernaut figure. Ready?

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY????!!!

OK i'm done. This Gambit release comes with a Danger Room Diorama Base that should slide along side the one that came with Cyclops...although they are both corners so this is going to be an awfully small training area unless Diamond makes some center pieces! 16 points of articulation await with alternate hands to increase the action. Expect Gambit to hit the pegs at specialty stores and comic shops this December. I'd also expect Diamond to make a variant with the longer hair head.

Michael Jackson Planet To Dwarf Our Moon

Your dreams have come true. That's no moon...THAT'S A MICHAEL JACKSON PLANET!!

We've all been sitting here wishing that we could live out the rest of our days as a character from a Michael Jackson video, be it the shy but flesh hungry Thriller Mikey...or the rebellious young thugs who dance fight better than anyone...or even the Webster hugging Mikey who turns into a Panther and chases MannyMo through the streets. IT IS NOW ALL POSSIBLE!!

SEE Virtual Worlds™, an entertainment company developing a virtual reality universe of connected planets tied to licensed franchises, today announced a collaborative deal with the Michael Jackson Estate to publish Planet Michael™, a massively multiplayer online virtual world set to launch in late 2011. Planet Michael will offer fans around the globe an innovative, first-of-its-kind interactive gaming and social experience that truly celebrates Michael Jackson’s extraordinary life as an artist and humanitarian.

The new planet, currently under development and slated for launch next year, will be an immersive virtual space themed after iconic visuals drawn from Michael’s music, his life and the global issues that concerned him. Entire continents will be created that will celebrate Michael’s unique genius in a way that underscores his place as the greatest artist of all time. Michael’s longtime fans will feel at home as they find themselves in places that seem familiar and yet unknown at the same time, and new generations will discover and experience Michael’s life in a way never before imagined. At its core, Planet Michael is a massive social gaming experience that will allow everyone, from the hardcore fan to the novice, to connect and engage in collaborative in-game activities with people worldwide.

Planet Michael is one of the first themed-planets that will be published by SEE Virtual Worlds for the Entropia Universe, a vast dynamic 3D environment created and provided to end users by MindArk PE AB. The Entropia Universe features several existing planets and combines a revolutionary cash economy with cutting-edge graphics. Although Planet Michael is a free-to-download world without monthly subscription fees, the real world in-game economy features gameplay monetization that allows players to take on dozens of different occupations and in certain instances, contribute to a charitable cause at the same time.

“When we first approached the Estate and talked about creating Planet Michael, one of our primary goals was to build an interactive environment where fans from all over the world come together to affirm Michael’s life-long dedication to fostering global friendships,” said Martin Biallas, CEO of SEE Virtual Worlds. “In building a space worthy of those global connections, we envisioned a magical, enjoyable place that will capture that zest for fun and life that was at Michael’s very core. Throughout his extensive career, the King of Pop was well-known for his visionary contributions to music, dance, fashion, entertainment and philanthropy, and it was critical that we somehow incorporate all of those elements into the game.”

“No artist unified the world like Michael Jackson, so it is fitting that in Planet Michael his fans will be able to join together in such a unique way online to celebrate his music, his artistry and his devotion to helping those in need,” said John Branca, co-executor for The Estate of Michael Jackson. “Michael was always exploring creative new ways technology could enhance the experiences of his fans, and for that reason we are thrilled to be working with SEE Virtual Worlds to build a global interactive experience that befits an artist as innovative as Michael Jackson” added John McClain, co-executor of the Estate.

Four words. Captain Mother Fucking Eo. DONE. At time of print, Corey Feldman was not, as yet, involved in the project.

DC Comics Shakes Things Up

For those of you who do not have your ear glued to the engine that is the Industrial Comic Book Complex, here's the skinny...

Wildstorm, as its own imprint, is no more. DC is folding those characters into the DC Comics banner. Does that mean we will see the Wildstorm characters interacting with DC Characters? I think it is very likely, but for now, that universe goes POOF for the time being.

The experiment known as ZUDA, whose website has been switched off for some time now, is now officially done. DC states that all projects that were to be completed by ZUDA will now be completed under the DC Comics banner, but there are some exceptions. You may recall the contest ZUDA ran in which the winner would have their comic published? "Eldritch" by Aaron Alexovich and Drew Rausch was the winning title, but two weeks after the win, ZUDA closed their website and informed the creators their efforts were in vain. Would be nice if someone at DC took the initiative to call the guys up, thank them for pushing the contest so hard core and perhaps give them a spot in the new scheme of things? Seems only fair! Imagine winning a contest like this and then being told you don't get published? I'd lose my mind.

Theres also talk of the company moving a portion of its operations to the West Coast, but this doesn't include the comics side of things, as far as I know. The release is sketchy on that detail...in that it doesn't really mention it at all.

At any rate, here's the press release straight from the honchos themselves...

The changes happening behind the scenes this week are part of a greater campaign to reshape DC Comics and build a company for the future. Our responsibility as Co-Publishers is to find a balance between short term opportunities and long term vision; between our strengths in traditional print formats and the infinite potential beyond print; between our characters’ rich legacies in the past and the bright promise for the future they hold.

As we’ve said before, there’s much to celebrate about DC. The foundation for long-term success is already here.

The DC Universe features the modern adventures of the World’s Greatest Superheroes, as envisioned by an exciting mix of new and fan favorite comic book creators. Vertigo is committed to publishing cutting edge, creator owned comic books and graphic novels by a wide array of creative voices.

One of our first decisions of the Co-Publishers was to up the publication of MAD Magazine from a quarterly periodical to a bimonthly one. In the wake of that decision, the magazine has seen increased sell-through growth. And we’re thrilled that MAD’s brand of madcap humor now stretches across media, with a highly-rated television show on Cartoon Network. The Usual Gangs of Idiots are an important part of this company and pop culture.

As we move forward, we also have to acknowledge the need for change.

After taking the comics scene by storm nearly 20 years ago, the WildStorm Universe titles will end this December. In this soft marketplace, these characters need a break to regroup and redefine what made them once unique and cutting edge. While these will be the final issues published under the WildStorm imprint, it will not be the last we will see of many of these heroes. We, along with Geoff Johns, have a lot of exciting plans for these amazing characters, so stay tuned. Going forward, WildStorm’s licensed titles and kids comics will now be published under the DC banner.

After this week, we will cease to publish new material under the ZUDA banner. The material that was to have been published as part of ZUDA this year will now be published under the DC banner. The official closing of ZUDA ends one chapter of DC’s digital history, but we will continue to find new ways to innovate with digital, incorporating much of the experience and knowledge that ZUDA brought into DC.

We’ll be further expanding our digital initiative and making a lot more news in this space. As part of that transformation, the WildStorm editorial team will undergo a restructuring and be folded into the overall DC Comics Digital team, based in Burbank, which will be led by Jim Lee and John Rood. With nearly two million free downloads and hundreds of thousands of paid downloads, our digital foray is already reaching a new audience worldwide. We could not be more excited by the successful launch of our Digital Publishing products in June, which exceeded all sales forecasts and will be building on our early success with new applications for DC material on all major formats and hardware, partnering with Warner Bros Digital Distribution. It has extremely been rewarding to hear anecdotal stories of lapsed readers returning to the art form and of brick and mortar stores gaining new customers who sampled digital comics.

We remain, as ever, dedicated to working with the greatest creators this industry has to offer, while inspiring generations of creators and readers to embrace this medium that we all love.

SYNOPSIS : Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-Omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor. As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

Triad Takes on John Carter of Mars

There can be no doubt that most of the mind blowing work coming out of the land of collectibles today is in the 12 inch figure range. Hot Toys may rule the planet in this format, but a little company called triad toys is looking to stake their claim on a piece of that pie. Today, we learned about their John Carter of Mars project and since there is barely anything out there from this property AND the pieces are sufficiently incredible, we will share!

JOHN CARTER OF MARS 12 INCH FIGURE

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Mars Trilogy has been hailed as one of the most influential science fiction series of this century. Edgar Rice Burroughs started writing his Martian adventures in 1911, and even though science claims there is no life on Mars his stories remain vibrant and timeless tales, because Burroughs knew the appeal and power of the Martian myth. Writers like Ray Bradbury and scientists like Carl Sagan have acknowledged that Burroughs' Martian tales were the wellspring from which their own careers arose.

With his opening trilogy - considered one of the landmarks of science fiction - Burroughs created a vast and sweeping epic. Captain John Carter of the Confederate Army is whisked to Mars and discovers a dying world of dry ocean beds where giant four-armed barbarians rule, of crumbling cities home to an advanced but decaying civilization, a world of strange beasts and savage combat, a world where love, honor and loyalty become the stuff of adventure. The world of Barsoom.

In eleven books, Burroughs takes the reader all around the Red Planet (and even to Jupiter), while the action and excitement never let up. With his combination of super science and swordplay, not only will Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian tales provide thrills a-plenty, but you'll also discover that without Burroughs there probably never would have been modern science fiction as we know it!

John Carter of Mars 12 Inch figure features:
- New Triad Toys Evolution body with over 35 points of articulation
- Helmet
- Cape
- Hand-made leather chest harness
- Hand-made leather waist, arms, and leg harness
- Leather boots with magnets for use with Bullet Time stand
- Pistol with side holster
- Full metal sword and scabbard
- Four (4) pairs of hands

You'll also be able to score a TARS TARKAS M|X FORMAT 1/4 SCALE MIXED MEDIA FORMAT FIGURE, putting it at a height to tower over John Carter. For those not well versed in statues, mixed media means some of the little straps on the piece are real and not molded to the body. This statue is limited to 200 pieces world wide. Preorders are open right now on Triadtoys.com, for shipping this coming 4th quarter.
