The Arrow Footage from New York Comic Con 2012

Fresh off its triumphant series premiere which was the most-watched new show debut on The CW Network in over three years and also the most-watched telecast of any kind on the network in three years, the new series Arrow (Wednesdays 8/7c on The CW) struck a Gotham bulls-eye today during its first-ever appearance at New York Comic Con.

Just days after the show’s launch, Arrow stars Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance) and Willa Holland (Thea Queen) appeared at the show’s panel session and unveiled an exclusive, action-packed highlight reel created specifically for NYCC, featuring a sneak peek at footage from the show’s first nine episodes.

Arrow On Target for Fall Release

Are you ready for the onslaught of new TV projects with masked men and women in the wake of The Avengers massive success?! The CW get's first crack at this audience with Arrow, the successor to Smallville... but that is where the similarities stop. Arrow is not the wise cracking Oliver Queen we are familiar with in this darker, more Batmanny tale of vengeance.

Oliver Queen creates the persona of Arrow -- a vigilante -- to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. Arrow premieres Wednesdays this fall on The CW.

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow - a vigilante - to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be - flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle - while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on - and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

OK so swap out the cape and cowl for a hood and quiver and you get the gist. Arrow may be the closest thing we see to Batman on the small screen and more importantly, will set the stage for other heroes/teams to get their own shows. Their success will open the doors to a mountain of possibilities! Where Smallville had some very camp moments, went heavy on the mellowdrama and managed to keep Clark out of the red and blue tights for nearly the entire run, Arrow seems to be going for a more serious tone with the inevitable "I want to love you but the mission comes first" angle we are sure to get because..you know..CW! If they can resist the urge to go super cheesy (as Smallville often did) and stay very real-world-grounded if (or rather WHEN) they introduce other heroes & villains, I can't see how they can lose. They've already got the advantage of a world ready for more super hero hijinks and better still, one that has embraced a gruesome zombie nightmare TV show (Walking Dead, natch)! This (in my opinion) gives them free reign to get as gritty with he subject as they'd like. It's all going to come down to writing. All eyes will be on Arrow this fall.

The Arrow Strikes

Not the GREEN Arrow...not the RED Arrow...just..The Arrow. Now..sure...why. At the very least, we know the origin story, as it were, will be in tact. Stephen Amell plays a less than clean shaven Arrow...

After being marooned for five years on a remote island, former billionaire playboy Oliver Queen returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime.

Arrow executive producer David Nutter says, "When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. ARROW is a different show - darker and harder-edged - but it's the same core idea. We're creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood's great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort." So a darker Smallville? Maybe, we'll see.

Welp..I'm holding out my geek noises of disdain until the pilot is inevitably leaked...or someone from the CW insists I see this to tell the world how awesome it is. Well.....start insisting...

Superman / Shazam : The Return of Black Adam Blu-ray Review

Ask any comic book fan and they'll tell you DC and Warner Brothers succeed with their straight to DVD releases EVERY TIME. This new release is a bit peculiar, when you think about those successes. We die hard fans wait patiently for each new release and snap them up the day they hit. That said, a collection of the short DC Showcase films seen on the beginnings of the last three releases probably isn't going to draw in the fan that already owns them. The packaging states that these are extended versions of the shorts never seen before, but I'm watching them all again for this review and I haven't spotted any footage so excellent it would cause me to notice it apart from what I already remember. The pack also includes commentary on all four shorts with high points including writer Steve Niles relishing every grind house moment in The Spectre and Joe R. Lansdale bringing his Texan charm and wit to the Jonah Hex track. Mind you, I'm not selling any of the shorts..well..short! These are excellent cartoons, especially for those of us growing tired of WB's Batman-Superman-Batman-Superman rinse repeat method. The animation is stellar, the writing top notch and the fun factor of seeing new heroes in action complete with blood and violence, in a cartoon format, can't be beat. It's just..you probably already own them all!!! So what's left to tempt you?

SUPERMAN / SHAZAM!!! My initial reaction is to say this is the BEST animated short we've seen to date. In most ways, this is the truth, if only because it is the first time we get a big scale battle with comic book heavy weights going toe to toe in the middle of a city...something usually reserved for the feature presentation. This is the origin story of Captain Marvel AKA Billy Batson, a tough orphan left to his own devices on the streets of an unforgiving city and still, he somehow retains his honor. Of course it doesn't hurt when you have a friend like Clark Kent looking after you. When Black Adam returns to Earth after being in exile for countless years he quickly finds Billy is the one chosen for the mantle of power he would claim for himself. Now Billy gets a crash course in tooling around town in a body packing strength, speed and flight all rivaling those gifts of Superman himself as the two team up for a battle you'll never forget. As always, the animation is top notch, with choreography of fight scenes like nothing I've seen since Avatar: The Last Airbender's finale. High praise, indeed!! The film hits all the right points with perfect doses of humor alongside pulse pounding action on an epic scale.

Also packed into the set are Bruce Timm's cartoon picks including a Batman the Animated Series episode called Showdown (starring Jonah Hex), a Batman: Brave and the Bold episode called The Chill of the Night (starring The Spectre) which is particularly DARK for a kid's show, the first Justice League Unlimited episode titled Initiation (with Green Arrow) and another JLU episode called Clash which puts Superman head to head with Captain Marvel in his only Justice League appearance. So now the real question is, are the extras and new cartoon enough for you to spend 20 dollars on a DVD or 30 on a Blu-ray? Probably not. The sad fact is, with pirating still going strong and with no end in sight, most people will just find a download of the new cartoon and call it a day. For re-released shorts with some new bits and a new short, this would have been an excellent opportunity for WB to create a "gateway drug" package. For 10 dollars on a DVD or 15 for Blu, you'd get set up with the action you crave, and for those dipping into the DC Universe for the first time, it would be a challenge not to get hooked! Never the less, if you've got the cash for the DVD, grab it on release day November 9th (when it will most surely be on sale), as we all know...the better the DVDs do, the more we'll see in the future!

Batman: Brave and the Bold Season 1 Part 1 DVD Review

As a fan of DC Comics animation, it is hard to get into a new Batman show without risking a new round of hysterical tears for the loss of our beloved Justice League Unlimited....cut down..before it's prime. why... Luckily, Warner Brothers animation does things right more often then wrong, and such is the case with Batman: Brave and the Bold! The concept is fairly simple. Make Batman a liiiiiittle less intense for the wee childrens without taking away any of his badassery and at the same time, couple him with another DC comics hero in every episode. Some episodes even manage to slide in a covert "moral to the story" without beating it over the heads of those of us who just want to sit down and watch the bright, shiny colors. In short, SUCCESS! This show should be a shining example of what can happen when a cartoon show doesn't question the intelligence of the viewer, delivering quality stories, excellent animation and fast paced action along with the characters of the DC Universe we are dying to see on the screen. They've even gone one step more and made it funny! Not retarded kiddie humor funny with farting noises and characters looking at each other with dull expressions while the script reads UHHHHHHH.....WOOOOOOO...CAAACAWWWWW...for 5 minutes straight. Real, honest to God humor, witty banter and one liners that make sense in the scene. Amazing...and miles better than The Batman show with all of its re-imaginings of DC characters to make them ...i don't know..more extreeeeme??!! Who needs it? We don't, and neither do the kids. This show rocks because they stick to the source material and have fun with it.

Brave and the Bold delivers non stop hero action with a soundtrack seemingly torn from "The Tick" or a better example.."Johnny Quest." Jazzy beats drive our heroes to take down the villains and keep the viewer engaged while dancing in our seats like filthy beatniks. This set covers 13 episodes in a 2 disk Season 1 Part 1 collection. Heroes on board include Red Tornado, The Atom, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Speedy, Deadman, Bwana Beast, Jonah Hex, Plastic Man, Elongated Man, Blue Beetle, Wildcat, Bronze Tiger, Fire and the WHOLE DAMN GREEN LANTERN CORPS fighting the likes of Gentleman Ghost, Gorilla Grodd, The Joker, Owlman, Black Manta and many many more. While this is a whole lot of awesome for a 2 disk set, it should be noted it comes with ZERO special features, which are no doubt being saved for the complete Season 1 set, so be aware. This is probably excellent for a kid's party gift but not so hot for the Bat fan who wants to see it all.

Episode Highlights include...

The Atom trying to explain science to Aquaman while inside Batman's body.
G'nort. Seriously. They animated fucking G'NORT!! ..and he has speaking parts.
Batman tears a hole in time and space and multiple universe Batmen come pouring out, including Vampire Batman!!!
Guy Gardener gets punched in the chops. Freeze frame...replay...and again...
A Static Shock reference. You won't see it coming.
Red Tornado tries to sing. Believe it.

Batman: Brave and the Bold Season 1 Part 1 is on sale NOWWWW at your favorite proprietors of shiny disks. Enjoy!!

P.S....Cartoon Network...Make this happen. It's Time. But don't just rob John K's style. Bring him on board. Please and Thank you.

DC Showcase Animated Shorts Collected This November

As seems to be the tradition with Warner Bros straight to DVD DC Comics animated titles...from one release to the next, you never know what you're going to get! Even when the feature film itself is highly enjoyable, they drop a short film on us like The Spectre that blows your mind..and that full length film away. Now the WB are collecting those shorts in one convenient package along with some new entries starring Green Arrow and Captain Marvel. Here's the skinny...

Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video have expanded the realm of superhero storytelling beyond the popular DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies with the introduction of the DC Showcase, a series of animated shorts featuring characters from the celebrated DC Comics vault. On November 9, 2010, Warner Home Video will distribute the DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection, the first quartet of animated adventures featuring the never-before-seen Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, as a Special Edition Blu-Ray™ for $29.99 (SRP) and single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP).

DC Showcase animated shorts initially appeared as special bonus content on the 2010 slate of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The 10- to 12-minute films include The Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow. All three titles will be presented in extended formats along with the first-ever release of Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam.

In Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, Clark Kent’s latest interview subject is street kid Billy Batson. What Clark doesn’t know is that Billy is more than a feisty kid with a lot of heart – he has been chosen by an ancient wizard to represent the good of man as the World’s Mightiest Mortal just by invoking the name of the wizard, "Shazam!" Billy's powers come none-too-soon, as he also discovers he's being pursued by a centuries' old, murderous villain, Black Adam – a foe so powerful, even Superman can’t stop him alone. The all-star cast of Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam is led by Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan) as Captain Marvel, George Newbern reprising his Justice League role as Superman, Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) as Black Adam and two-time Emmy Award® winner James Garner (8 Simple Rules) as The Wizard.

Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday) is executive producer and Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League, Avatar: The Last Airbender) is director of the first series of DC Showcase titles. Michael Jelenic (Wonder Woman) wrote the 22-minute script

Other shorts included on the DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection:

The Spectre – A detective story with an ethereal twist featuring an otherworldly character. The short is written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), and the voice cast includes Gary Cole (Entourage) and Alyssa Milano (Charmed).

Jonah Hex – The tough-as-nails bounty hunter always gets his man - until someone else gets to him first - in this case a murderous madam who wants to steal more than just his bounty from Jonah Hex. Based on a story from the award-winning Jonah Hex comic series, and scripted by world-renowned author Joe Lansdale. The voice cast is led by Thomas Jane (Hung), Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Michelle Trachtenberg (Mercy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Michael Rooker (Days of Thunder).

Green Arrow – At the Star City International Airport to pick up his girlfriend, Oliver Queen is forced into action as Green Arrow to protect the 10-year-old Princess of Vlatava from his old nemesis Merlyn the Magnificent and the League of Assassins. Greg Weisman (Young Justice) pens this action-packed tale, which features the voices of Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives) as the title character and Malcolm McDowell (Entourage) as his foe.

“The DC Showcase once again combines the respective creative talents of DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video to provide fans with
vivid, new experiences alongside characters from within the vast resources of DC Comics,” said Matt Bierman, Senior Vice President Production, Warner Premiere.

“The DC Showcase allows us to expand the DC Universe with short stories based on intriguing characters – from a 1940s comics sensation like The Spectre to a creation of the 1970s like Jonah Hex – just begging to be presented to a very worthy fan base,” said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment.

“Whereas DC Universe films have given fans the broad strokes of superhero entertainment, we know devout comics fans will enjoy seeing the characters in the DC Showcase come to animated life – some for the very first time – and we believe this presentation will open a window for new viewers to experience these unique, textured heroes and villains,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing.

DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection 1-Disc Special Edition DVD features more than 1 hour of exciting extra content, including:
• Four animation shorts (est. 62 min)
• Four additional bonus TV series episodes handpicked by Bruce Timm

The Next DC Animated Movie: Superman/ Batman: Apocalypse

Coming September 28, 2010

To save an earthbound Kryptonian, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight unite once again – this time to battle the powerful forces of Darkseid – in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming September 28, 2010 from Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. The highly anticipated, full-length film will be distributed by Warner Home Video as a Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD as well as single disc DVD. The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.

Fan favorites Tim Daly (Private Practice) and Kevin Conroy (China Beach) return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The celebrity-laden guest cast is headed by Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as the daunting Darkseid. Sci-Fi heroine Summer Glau (Serenity/Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) provides the voice of Supergirl, and seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up) reprises his Superman: The Animated Series/Justice League role as Granny Goodness.

Based on the DC Comics series/graphic novel “Superman/Batman: Supergirl” by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist).

After a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.

In addition to the feature film, the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD include the third DC Showcase animated short, Green Arrow. Screenwriter Greg Weisman’s story finds Oliver Queen at the Star City International
Airport to pick up his girlfriend, only to be forced into action as Green Arrow to protect the 10-year-old Princess of Vlatava from his old nemesis Merlyn the Magnificent and the League of Assassins. The short features the voices of Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives) and
Malcolm McDowell (Entourage). Bruce Timm is executive producer.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse 2-Disc Special Edition DVD features more than 1 1/2 hours of exciting extra content, including:
• Feature film (est. 75 min)
• DC Showcase: Green Arrow (10 min)
• Sneak Peak at the Next DC Universe Animated Original Movie (10 min)
• Featurette: Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton - A comprehensive look at The Maiden of Might from her introduction in the classic age of comics to her death in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event to her appearance on Smallville and beyond.
• 2 bonus episodes from animated television series handpicked by Bruce Timm

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Special Edition Blu-Ray™ will include more than 2 1/2 hours of intriguing bonus features, starting with all of the content available on the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD and adding:
• All-New Featurette: The New Gods - This documentary covers Darkseid’s story, particularly in reference to the adaptation of Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. A primer on the wealth of material and stories contained in the New Gods series, along with a deeper understanding of why these characters – and especially Darkseid – are so memorable and important to the DC pantheon.
• All-New Featurette Pods
• Orion - The mightiest warrior on either New Genesis or Apokolips, Orion follows an almost Shakespearean arc culminating in the slaying of his father, Darkseid. This mini-featurette shines a light on this classically tragic character.
Mister Miracle - This mini-featurette focuses on the greatest escape artist the universe has ever known and how he was traded in a peace effort to be raised by Darkseid, the enemy of all New Genesis.
• 2 additional bonus TV series episodes handpicked by Bruce Timm
• Digital copy on disc of the feature film

“Great things happen when powerful entities come together, and the partnership of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation is proud to continue this popular film series by once again uniting the two most popular characters in the DC Universe in a story that
truly tests their strength, trust, loyalty, ingenuity and heroism,” said Matt Bierman, Senior Vice President Production, Warner Premiere.

"It is a testament to the larger-than-life nature of Jeph Loeb’s blockbuster storylines that two of the first nine DC Universe movies are based on his work," said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment. "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse lets us see Superman and
Batman in action side-by-side again, but this time along with Supergirl and one of DC's greatest villains, Darkseid."

“Just as Superman and Batman stand atop the DC canon of characters, so do the respective seminal voices of Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy in the hearts and minds of fans. Superman/Batman: Apocalypse will no doubt please comic-centric and mainstream audiences alike – particularly in the performances of Daly and Conroy opposite dynamic actors like Andre Braugher and Ed Asner, and fanboy favorite Summer Glau,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Partner Brands.
