Psychological thriller Mala makes its public debut with a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con – the first-ever Indian-themed panel in NYCC history – on Saturday, October 11 from 11:00am-12:00pm in Room 409 of the Javits Center. The Indian mother-daughter producing team of Indigo and Nisha Sabharwal headline the panel of cast and filmmakers, which will include a revealing discussion of the indie frightener, the first film clips to be exhibited in public, and exclusive giveaway items to all fans attending the panel.
In Mala, Reema unexpectedly inherits an abandoned resort on a remote tropical island and, accompanied by a trio of her friends, sets out to uncover the truth behind her inheritance. Upon arrival, the group encounters enigmatic locals, peculiar rituals and sinister omens, leading Reema to suspect her aunt's untimely death was anything but accidental. As Reema delves into the island’s secrets, she discovers that her family’s past is intertwined with an ancient curse involving tantric rituals and forbidden practices. Haunted by visions and cryptic messages from her late mother, Reema must navigate a labyrinth of spiritual awakening, familial betrayal and moral dilemmas to emerge and morph into her true self. As tensions rise and the rituals grow perilous, Reema and her friends must confront their deepest fears to survive the island’s sinister grip.
Steeped in Indian dark magic, Mala will be discussed by a panel of cast members – led by Indigo Sabharwal (Curry Scent) as the title character, alongside Raw Leiba (The Walking Dead), Gisele George (The College Tour), Nikhil Kamkolkar (Love, Love) and Nehru Sabharwal – and filmmakers Nisha Sabharwal (Draupadi Unleashed), a multifaceted creative professional known for her work as an author, screenwriter, co-director and producer, and the film’s budding director, Trishul Thejasvi.
“This has been a true passion project from the start, giving us the opportunity to expose deep, suspenseful, enthralling themes of Indian mythos and lore across a gripping film,” said Nisha Sabharwal. “We’re very excited to have our official launch at New York Comic Con, and to offer fans an altogether new, otherworldly approach to a tried and true genre.”
The New York Comic Con panel marks the first time anything has been released about the original film.
