Big Chief Studios: The Latest on Doctor Who & Sherlock 12 inch Action Figures

While Hot Toys continue their domination of Asia and, closer to home, nearly every damn collector's heart here in the states via Sideshow Collectibles, a little company called Big Chief Studios has been making a big noise across the pond with a range of BBC TV based 12 inch action figures with likenesses that take down all comers. Our buddies at Big Chief set up camp at MCM Birmingham Comic Con nearly two weeks back and displayed their latest and greatest from both Doctor Who and Sherlock lines. The Big Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Week

Matt Booker (a genuine Brit) reports!

Well it's all a bit Doctor Who crazy at the moment as this weekend celebrates the 50th anniversary of the longest running scifi show in the world. Being from the UK, I was brought up on the adventures of The Doctor, his companions, the magical blue box, many adversaries and adventures. The BBC this week released a prelude to the big 50th anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor" that fans in the UK can watch on TV or on demand... But it's also online!, If you haven't seen it yet, watch it. It will blow any Who fan's mind..

Doctor Who: The Complete Series 1-7 Limited Edition Blu-ray Set

The only thing better than watching Doctor Who is watching it in high definition, which is why BBC Home Entertainment is celebrating Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary with the release of Doctor Who: The Complete Series 1-7 Limited Edition Blu-ray Gift Set on November 5, 2013. The set includes the complete adventures of the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston, Thor: The Dark World) and Tenth Doctor (David Tennant, Broadchurch, Fright Night), available in newly remastered Blu-ray versions at full 1080p resolution for the first time ever, sitting alongside those of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in this high definition collection. The Home Entertainment team has gone above and beyond to bring fans the best possible experience, and have also fully remastered the complete Tenth Doctor Specials as well as The Complete Fifth and Sixth Series (previously available on Blu-ray), to full 1080p resolution as well. Throw in the new Doctor Who: The Complete Seventh Series Blu-ray set along with hours and hours of bonus features from the past collections PLUS 120 minutes of bonus material that has never previously been available on disc, as well as more goodies than you can shake a sonic screwdriver at, and this is one blue box that just might actually be bigger on the inside.

Big Chief's Sherlock Heads

When making the ultimate collectible for a much beloved series of any sort, you can start 1 of 2 ways. One would be to begin with the basics like accessories essential to the character...get all that minutia filled in to get the fans salivating and then wow them with the full reveal proclaiming YOUR toy is the BEST toy in the verse and no other toy is worthy to stand next to it. Another road would be to show off the hardest bit of a 12 inch action figure first, for the approval and comments of those die hard fans, so you are assured they are in love by the time you show off a perfectly fitting outfit and all the little bits packed along with it. In the case of a 12 inch action figure, the hardest bit is always the head, as nailing the likeness of a human being is more an art than anything else. Big Chief always seems to go the second route and today, continue that fine tradition with the reveal of the heads for their Sherlock 12 inch action figures at the Birmingham Memorabilia show this weekend.

Toy Fair 2013 : Sherlock is Coming

Big Chief Studios are getting in on the Toy Fair teaser business you love so much...and by love I mean hate with the passion of 1,00000 burning suns. NO TEASING!!! Anyways, our favorite 12 inch action figure making Brits dropped a teaser today that looks an awful lot like Benedict Cumberbatch sporting his "Sherlock" TV show look. What does that tell us?

THERE'S A 12 INCH SHERLOCK FIGURE ON THE WAY!!!

Not much more news to it as this is, after all, a teaser. We will note that Big Chief only sells their products online, so if you like what you see, today is a good day to dive into their website HERE and scoop up their amazing 11th Doctor and Amy Pond 12 inch figures, or that 10th Doctor figure we showed HERE that had one female friend of ours clutching her ovaries. I admittedly don't know exactly what that means, but I assume it is a sort of happy feeling. We'll assume this mini Cumberbatch will trigger a similar clutching of womanly parts. A little birdie told us Sherlock will definitely have a friend to solve mysteries with, so keep watching for that reveal!

We've still got a small mountain of UK Toy Fair goodness to sort through as the companies begin to send us all their teasers and pre-show reveals, so keep checking back often and follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/idlehandsblog or https://twitter.com/nomadixxx (if you want your news faster and don't mind mildly psycho chatter.)

You can also dive into our picture galleries as they go live RIGHT HERE!

Toy Fair 2012 : Big Chief's Doctor Who

In a land with magnificent 12 inch action figures by Hot Toys, it's hard to get a fan's attention if you're a young company trying to make a name for yourselves. You'd have to come out of the gate with a license already worshiped by a legion of fans AND kick out a product far superior than those of your average toy slingers just looking to make an acceptable product for the kiddies. You'd need a phenomenon like...

DOCTOR WHO
...and you'd need to be like Big Chief Studios, who are just kicking all sorts of ass with their upcoming Who-swag. We've got an update, picture wise, courtesy of our new best friend Halestorm, so we'll just roll those out along with some previously revealed info for those new to the topic. I may make the wrong assumption in saying these are the same figures the previous text is based on, but we'll run with it anyway. Annnnd go.

Next in line for production..THE WEEPING ANGELS!!

With countless monsters and aliens populating the universe, we wanted to choose a worthy adversary for our Eleventh Doctor figure. A Dalek perhaps? Maybe a Cyberman? After numerous discussions and brainstorming sessions, we kept coming back to arguably one of the show’s most scary creations – the Weeping Angels. The figure is currently at the earliest stage of development, but we have exciting plans for these terrifying characters.
We'll soon be getting the 10th Doctor as well, so start saving your cash! But there's bigger news..

EXPANSION PACKS!

Available exclusively at www.bigchiefstudios.co.uk, both Accessory and Costume Expansion Packs will be sold separately. In addition we will also release our articulated bodies for collectors to purchase, so that they may create an entirely new version of a character.

Cast of BBC TV's Merlin In The Flesh...and Plastic

Take the Merlin/ Arthur myth you know and love. Now add a healthy shot of Raimi-esque magic sauce...which essentially means cut down half the serious moments in favor of an odd moment or 16 with intentionally hysterical overtones. Think Hercules with more magic and some awesome looking creatures! This is what's been playing on the Syfy channel here in the states and if you haven't been watching yet, there's no better time than now! The show is witty, well thought out and extremely well acted even when the action calls for something WAY over the top...like an ogre disguised as a beautiful princess and hating every minute of it. I was also told about a pixie who has inappropriate thoughts about old men. Sold! Want to know more? Here's the skinny right from the crew themselves...

For those of you already on board, scificollector.co.uk has whipped up the action figures you crave in your heart of hearts. This is a 3.75" line kicking off with Merlin, Gaius, Arthur and Morgana, all fully poseable with accessories. No word yet if they will make their way to the states, but we'll keep you posted on that front.
