Eight New DC SUPER POWERS Comic Book Variant Covers

DC Comics Super Powers Action Figure Covers PoisonIvy on Gotham City Sirens 1 A
In August, eight new “DC Super Powers” comic book variant covers will imagine what an unreleased wave of DC action figures would have looked like if the Kenner line of Super Powers toys from 1984-86 had continued!* Look for DC Super Powers variant covers on Batman #151, Gotham City Sirens #1, Green Lantern: War Journal #12, Nightwing #117, Power Girl #12, Superman #17, The Flash #12, and Titans #14! Reach out to your local comic book shop for preorder information and snag yourself one of these DC Super Powers variant covers!

DC’s new DC Super Powers variant covers coming in August evoke the classic Super Powers toy line and are packed with tons of Easter eggs and details. To re-create the look and feel of the original Kenner Super Powers packaging, original 1980s Super Powers product artist Alex Saviuk has returned to deliver the spot illustrations for each new variant cover. Saviuk was a character artist for the Kenner packaging from ’84 to ’86 and drew many of the minicomics that were included with each figure. The new DC Super Powers variant covers are designed and sculpted by one of the leading historians of the original Kenner Super Powers toy line and the cofounder of Raving Toy Maniac and Action Figure Insider, Jason Geyer, who is a toy designer himself.

MANGLORS are BACK!

Manglors Poster
For decades, the legends of their horrors have persisted.
The eggs, hidden in the depths of FOSSIL POINT, have existed in a state of hibernation.
Now, after forty years of silence, the volcano of MANGLOR MOUNTAIN has erupted again - and the MANGLORS - are back!

In 1983, the Ideal Toy Company introduced the "sticky-icky creatures from another dimension", the Action Aliens known as the Manglors. Comprised of both ferocious warriors and incredible creatures, these beings "made of the strangest stuff on earth" - sorbothane - were stretchy, sticky, clay-like monstrosities. The incredible box art by the late, great Ken Kelly promised the ultimate warriors of terror, but a perplexing marketing decision prompting kids to tear them apart doomed the line. Not even the addition of the amazing Prehi-Storage Eggs in 1984 could save the Manglors from tumbling into the toyboxes of obscurity.

90's Marvel Universe Card Art Returns

Game Office Marvel Universe Nano Puzzle Thor

Sensing the immense love fans are giving anything that calls back to their very geeky childhoods, European company Game Office is releasing a series of "Nano Puzzles" featuring art from the 90's Marvel Universe card series from Impel. For those who don't go ham on collectibles of any sort, I'll clue you in that over the Covid shut down, and still (largely) today, the market on most 80's vintage toy lines went through the roof, along with several card series that were very nearly worthless prior to this bump. Impel's first series Marvel Universe card series got a significant kick in the pants and still remains in the triple digits for a complete set, with holograms. Most likely noticing this trend, licensors are taking full advantage!

Retro-a-go-go Supersizing Your Halloween

For a lot of us, fond memories of simple plastic masks with a bit of elastic send us into fits of geeking with just a glance. These masks weren't perfect, and to be honest, most likenesses attempted of non-cartoony characters became the stuff of nightmares, only lending to their appeal. I've got an Adams Family movie Uncle Fester mask that at once delights adults and makes small children cry. Now Retro-A-Go-Go look to tap into that love by taking this simple format and punching it up to a nearly 2 foot size, suitable for sending would-be home invaders running for the hills.

Mystery of the Toys R Us Timewarp

While browsing ToysRUs.com, utilizing their wish list to earmark some awesome things I wanted to keep an eye on as they drop in price, I stumbled across something seriously strange.

Back in the 80's, the only action figure line to feed my frenzy for Marvel Comics collectibles (post-Mego) was a little line called Secret Wars. Like most figures of its time, the figure line was mainly the same sculpt painted over repeatedly with a new head popped on top. Though such practices are all but gone now (flashes a look at Mattel and Hasbro), the line still has a firm hold on my heart strings.

Fast forward to 2010 and I'm all growed up, killing some down time by looking over the Marvel toy section on TRU.com and as I reach the end of the list, I find this.

Vintage 1984 Marvel Doom Roller - $59.99

I scratched my head and re-read the description about 17 times before clicking "order" to see what would happen. It was like the site was taunting me as I had to re-enter my info 3 times to complete my order due to standard suckage of their website, but in the end, the order was placed with a $10 dollar off coupon used to boot! I figured I'd wait and see what shows up in the mail, then possibly return it to my local Toys R Us to take camera phone pics of them going cross eyed in disbelief. Then I got another idea.

Heading back to the front page, I decided to enter the word "Vintage". Up came several pages of clothing and a couple of cute little RC Robots I didn't know existed and then...

Star Wars 1982 Empire Strikes Back Vintage Loose Action Figure- C-3PO with cape in Kenner Sealed Baggie
- $14.99

WTF??!! One item could be a disgruntled website worker deciding to play a joke on the geeks of the world and maybe even follow through with the order to put a gold cap on the laugh, but two items from the 80's just sitting there waiting for purchase, in stock?! I'm not even going to joke over them calling the accessory a cape..because..that's just tru.com, ya know? Part of their charm. I took a quick detour over to ebay and noticed the C3PO with removable limbs in the baggie is fairly common, in mint condition, and going for close to this price, so apparently people have come across caches of this gem before... So that lead me to my next question...

Just how many of these items can Toysrus.com possibly have?? In stock, right now, are 24 Doom Rollers and 29 3POs!! Someone could clean then out of this stock for under 2 grand, so if this interests you, I suggest you pounce NOW and we'll consider ourselves part of the most ridiculous club ever. Stay tuned for more on this story when TRU gets back to me and when the Doom Roller arrives here!

P.S...for the Star Wars freaks..the site also has the Disney Star Tours figures up for sale as well as a Galactic Hunt 30th anniversary 2 pack with Concept Chewie and Biggs, Concept 3po and R2 (which I never saw in a store), the 2008 SDCC Clone Trooper, 2007 Shadow Scout Speeder AND the Holiday Jawas! They've even got Jorg Sacol, an 89 Hotwheels Batmobile...and an 86 Mets autographed baseball. Oddsville.
