The Play Date: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem

We geeks are a grumpy, angry, easily annoyed lot. When we heard of this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie project, we raised hell and pre-emptively called for the heads of all involved. Now we've got a trailer and IT LOOKS SO DAMN COOL that all is forgiven. A lot can happen in a month! Now, thanks to the Toy Insider's "Play Date" event, we get an up close look at a tight pile of Playmate's upcoming Mutant Mayhem TMNT toys.

One of the biggest action figure phenomena of all-time returns this summer with a new look and new attitude for the new millennium. Following the world premiere of a teaser preview for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” Playmates Toys today revealed a sampling of its Ninja Turtles action figures, vehicles, and role play toys based on the late summer 2023 film.

Actor John de Lancie, already set to reprise his famed role as “Q” in the upcoming second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” is also joining forces with Playmates Toys as part of the toy company’s highly anticipated launch of new Star Trek action figures and accessories. 

Beginning with this week’s launch of the toy giant’s new global website dedicated to Star Trek toys – PlaymatesStarTrekToys.com – de Lancie will appear in an ongoing series of social media vignettes and other streamable content throughout 2022. 

SDCC 2021: Playmates Toys Returns To The Star Trek Universe

Playmates Toys and ViacomCBS Consumer Products today announced that ViacomCBS has awarded the global toy company with the licensing rights for action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories for all Star Trek properties. Playmates will launch its new Star Trek toy line in 2022, following Star Trek’s entry into kids’ content with the premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences.

So Playmates rings up and says WE HAVE THE VOLTRON LICENSE!! We want to send you Voltron toys!! Obviously there is YAYing and happy dancing. I make suggestions including "Let me know when that big sucker is coming because i'll need to book a plethora of time to pour over it and table a thousand pictures. Exactly 1 thousand." Then they say they can only send over the basic figures, you are getting 2 of them. ENJOY!! This can be a real bummer, as I am a poor lad and can not afford the fancy massive Voltron gracing store shelves...but then I have a flashback when the toys actually arrive. Remembering being poor little Paul who also couldn't afford the giant Voltron, but managed to save up some squirreled away arcade moneys for what was most likely a bootleg Voltron from the Te-Amo on the corner of 15th and Avenue U. He wasn't a massive, interconnecting robot, but he was mine.

We've got a lot more to show you from the recent Sweet Suite blogger event in New York City, so let's jump back into it with a new line promising to make your favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon characters accessible to little hands! The line is called Half-Shell Heroes, boasting brighter colors, rounded edges, maximum playability and no small parts.

Playmates are no dopes, having packed killer style into these lines, which are sure to attract collectors and parents alike. BATTLE IN THE TOY ISLES!!! Note the 3 different scales...and the use of the Turtle's shortened names in place of the full names, which I thought was a nice touch!

Toy Fair 2014: Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie Figures : Take 2

RIGHT! So some time back, we had an excellent tipster email in with a full report on the look of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters from the new film. Unfortunately, this news came a little early for the licensors, and so we took the info down. Flash forward to today! We've been to the Playmates Toys booth at New York Toy Fair 2014, we were officially lead into an official room where official figures were shown by official looking people, one of which made awesome hand motions toward the toys in a showroom model fashion as the first person described the lines, and after getting a thumbs up from the crew...WE CAN NOW, OFFICIALLY DESCRIBE THE DAMN TURTLES!!

It's a tricky art. Too much push and your product suffers as the audience finds you obnoxious. Too little and we are left wondering if what we just saw was actually a commercial for something we can buy! With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returning to toy shelves, Playmates wanted to make sure they re-captured the energy and non-stop fun of their past lines...and past commercials as well.
