Universal Monsters Select

It's a mouth full! Diamond expands their "Select" line with a journey to the dark side...a classic dark side we horror fans hold close to our hearts. Universal Monsters is often visited by collectibles companies but not rendered with the most care. Diamond has a clear love for the source material and pours it all into their new figure line. You can see the fruits of that labor HERE, but today, Diamond released a little official info and an image of The Creature from the Black Lagoon UM Select figure.

What better way to expand this specialty market exclusive line then the Iconic Universal Monsters. This now annual line debuts with none other then the legendary Creature from the Black Lagoon! Sculpted by Rudy Garcia with a base sculpted by Jean St. Jean, this seven-inch portrayal of the infamous Creature depicts the legend in perhaps it most screen accurate detail. The Select version includes an exclusive paint scheme as well detailed base featuring the films alluring Femme Fatale. In stores this May, $19.99.

These figures are packaged in the deluxe style like the Marvel Select figures with a bigger base, but there will also be a second version with a smaller base and smaller packaging for mass market and a 15.99 price tag. Deluxe Frankenstein will come with the lab table and the Mummy with his sarcophagus. There are paint variations between the two lines as well.

Universal Monster Retro-Style (AKA Mego) action figures are also on the way with Dracula and The Wolfman in wave 1 then the Mummy and Frankenstein in wave 2. EMCE lends a hand there, as you'd expect.

Minimates get their turn as well, starting with The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The heroines in these sets will only be available in comic shops. Mass Market versions will include a Black and White version of the main monster.

Universal Monsters is centered around the Halloween holiday, so every year, we'll get new releases for the lines. There will also be "evergreen" items that will hit the shelves year round. Which is which was not revealed, but I suppose we'll find out soon enough!

Thanks to Heather Buckley for info gathering at Toy Fair 2010.

Toy Fair 2010: Hasbro: Marvel Universe

As much as I wish them away, Marvel Universe are here and people are buying them, so there is no end in sight! A pox on their tiny little houses. We hit Hasbro’s showroom at Toy Fair 2010 and learned Hasbro’s master plan for the line.

The numbers and waves reset for 2010 with the HAMMER files replacing the Fury Files and Mike Deodato creating the card art. Wave 1 has been in stores for some time now and wave 2 has been popping up with…

Bucky
Black Widow (with short haired and Yelena versions on the way)
First Appearance Captain America
Luke Cage
Modern Thor
Extremis Armor Iron Man

Wave 3
Archangel
Kitty Pryde with Lockheed
Havok
AIM Agent
Colossus
Juggernaut

Wave 4:
Iron Patriot
Skrull Soldier
Iron Spider-Man
Wrecker
Winter Soldier
Mary Jane with Miss Lion!

They also teased Thanos before revealing GALACTUS!! This monstrous 19 inch figure (which IS bigger than the 15 inch BAF Galactus) has lights and sounds and is packed with his favored herald, Silver Surfer. He’ll be on shelves in October but we suspect you’ll be able to buy him early at San Diego Comic Con, where I will take him home and call him Steve.

2 figure comic packs replace Secret Wars as it comes to an end with the FINAL WAVE. First in line will be..

Dark Phoenix and Cyclops, Dark Avengers Venom as Spider-Man and Dakken as Wolverine and Sentry and Spider-Man

Target gets the first round of exclusives this Spring with four 2 figure packs including Classic Iron Man VS Black Panther, Iron Man VS Punisher, Spider-Man VS Green Goblin and Wolverine VS Hand Ninja

For San Diego Comic Con, we’ll be getting an Ages of Thunder Thor and Ultimate Captain America.

Now I return to my hypnotic mind assault on the Hasbro execs to get them to make more Marvel Legends. Cary on.

Toy Fair 2010: Hasbro: Marvel Legends 2 Packs

Marvel Legends 2 packs are coming this fall! Yea, I know. That’s a very long wait for new 6 inch figures, but at least we’ve got some Iron Man pieces hitting before then! CLICK HERE for the full deal on the Iron Man 2 movie and comic lines. Right now, we’ll focus on my favorite scale. Toys R Us will have new 2 packs with …

  • Deadpool (fan choice) and Weapon X Warpath
  • Black Widow and Winter Soldier
  • Valkyrie and Ed McGuiness Hulk

You can bet cash money that Hulk will have a red variant. Maybe a blond haired Black Widow? I'd love to see Winter Soldier swapped with Bucky as Captain America. Maybe a blue and gold X-Men uniform for Deadpool and classic colors for Warpath? Got some ideas of your own? Leave them below!

Secret Celeb Meetings at Toy Fair 2010

While the rest of us were banging away at Toy Fair 2010 coverage, Hasbro played host to their returning Iron Man ( Robert Downey Jr ) and their new Stretch Armstrong ( Taylor Lautner ). Hasbro shared these pics of the hijinks with us. You'll notice an interesting figure in RDJ's hands! That is a new 6 inch figure due for release later this year.

Toy Fair 2010: JUN Planning

JUN Planning is another Japanese company whose eye for quality is known across the planet. No licensed lines or even new Nightmare Before Christmas offerings, but holy damn...even if you have no desire to buy a doll, you can sure appreciate the quality they put into them! Check out our mini gallery below and then click on one to see the whole lot!!

Toy Fair 2010: McFarlane Toys

You never forget your first love. McFarlane was mine. Monsters of all shapes and sizes flooded stores and I bought them ALL. The masters of Spawn have been a little light on the creepy lately, but that doesn't mean they've lost their edge. Giant hulking evil has been replaced by giant hulking evil from space fighting ragtag human forces in a little game called HALO. You might have heard of it? They've also got all the Gyllenhaal you can handle as they bring Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time action figures to a store near you. And then there's sports. As a hardcore geek, I'm not sure what this is, but I hear people like it, so I shot it anyway. Hit the links and prepare for toymagheddon!!

Special Thanks to Carmen and the rest of the McFarlane crew for their attention and access! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: Spin Master

They've got The Last Airbender! They've got Tron! They've got How to Train Your Dragon! Unfortunately, they didn't show any of that. Bummer. They did show the newest from Tech Deck, Air Hogs and legions of crazy little battle monsters we know as BAKUGAN (which is also the battle cry I yell at Uncle Creepy of Dread Central when we've both been working way too late). They also introduced us the the oddest pile of smush I've ever stuck my hands in...and I've had my hands in some very strange places. Do with that what you will and hit the links to see the magic!

Special thanks to Andrew and the Spin Master team for their time and attention!

Toy Fair 2010: Square Enix

Ask any pro rabid toy collector around the world who makes the most beautiful action figures in the world and they'd have to answer Square Enix. At a time when it seems some companies are content to step backward in quality, they continue to set the bar as high as it can go. Toy Fair 2010 proves to be another stellar showing for our friends across the water with new items from Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Kingdom Hearts and the most insane creations we've ever seen from the world of Final Fantasy. Hit the links and be amazed!

Thanks to the Square Enix crew for their attention and access and Heather Buckley for her interview super powers! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: Shocker Toys

The boys have broken away from their Shockinis and made their mark on the action figure market. If the constant traffic in their booth was any indication, we'll be seeing a lot more from them! A small army of Indie Spotlight figures stood nekkid (sans paint jobs) and waiting for eager eyes while their fat cousins, the Mallows, assimilated new licenses like Johnny Test, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Dragon Ball Z! Hit the links and dive in to see if Shocker Toys can recreate the magic of a little figure called Scud...

Thanks to Geoff, Lance and the Shocker Toys crew for their time and access and Heather Buckley for her interview super powers! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: Bandai

Two things I know. Bandai know how to make a FUN toy for fans and kids alike. This year, Mighty Morphin continues to rage on while Ben 10 finds some wicked new alien forms to hook those hardcore collectors. THIS MAY BE THE YEAR YOU BUY BEN 10, cranky Marvel collectors!! Of course, there are also some things for the girlie girls, as we know you are reading and we want to service you. Wait...

Just hit the links!!!

Thanks to Colleen and the rest of our friends at Bandai for their time and access and Heather Buckley for her interview super powers! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: Diamond Select

Diamond Select expands its eclectic lineup this year with a few surprises we spoiled right before the show. Sorry! They still managed to show off an insane display of oddball minimates, awesomely sculpted Universal Monsters and pop culture products that would make any geek's head explode. Hit the links below and dive into the eye candy!

Thanks to the Diamond Select crew for their time and access and Heather Buckley for her interview super powers! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: DC Direct

While most companies seemed to be scaling their lines back this year, DC Direct/ DC Unlimited were charging full ahead! This was probably my hardest shoot at the show with items from the new Jonah Hex movie, Mass Effect 2, Blackest Night, Ame Comi and World of Warcraft among the highlights. Here's the links to get you started while we get all Heather Buckley's interview data sorted out...and we still have one more day of shooting!

Special thanks the the DC Direct crew for their patience and access and Heather Buckley for her interview super powers! Note: Figures pictured are often not finished product. Final items may look different.

Toy Fair 2010: Hasbro: G.I.Joe

Yes, “knowing is half the battle.” But in 2010, the other half of the battle is getting your hands on the latest G.I. JOE action figures and vehicles! As excitement for last summer’s blockbuster movie G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA remains high, Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) launches a new line of G.I. JOE toys that captures the passion and exhilaration that have been a signature part of the brand for more than 45 years.

In 2010 THE PURSUIT OF COBRA line finds the heroic G.I. JOE team on the heels of the evil and menacing COBRA organization. Beginning in the fall, the G.I. JOE brand embarks in THE PURSUIT OF COBRA in four new battlegrounds: Desert, City, Jungle and Arctic. The new convoy of toys includes covert and technologically advanced 3-¾-inch action figures and vehicles themed to these new assignments. The vehicle line also includes an updated version of the H.I.S.S. Tank, the iconic vehicle from the 1980s G.I. JOE vs. COBRA saga. THE PURSUIT OF COBRA line will also feature a new packaging look that blends classic elements from the brand’s iconic 1980s era with a modern, high-tech aesthetic that embodies the near-future global fantasy.

In addition to highly articulated new action figures and awesome vehicles, staples of the iconic brand, the G.I. JOE toy line introduces two new expressions in 2010. The new G.I. JOE 3-3/4-inch MOBILE MECH Suits feature an exclusive figure and give kids the opportunity to customize new high-tech action figure armored suits to their own specifications.
