YOU Choose Marvel Minimates Series 50!

The year 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Diamond Select Toys' Marvel Minimates line, and will coincidentally see the 50th consecutive series of figures released at comic shops and specialty stores. To celebrate, DST wants to do something to recognize the fans who have supported the line over the years. And since there are so many fan-favorite characters who have yet to be made in the line, they're going to give those fans the power to decide the line-up for Series 50! This series will only be available at comic shops and specialty stores, and will be entirely composed of fan-voted characters!

Over the next four weeks, Marvel.com will present a series of four polls, each representing one group of characters. Poll #1 will be the Main Assault Team, showcasing the Marvel Universe's star players sporting distinctly different looks. Poll #2 will be the Support Team, giving some love to the unsung heroes who have backed up the all-stars over the years. Poll #3 will be the Primary Targets, villain characters who we've never gotten as Minimates or who desperately need a re-do. And Poll #4 will be the Cannon Fodder, army-builder characters who you may want to buy more than one of. The top 1 or 2 vote-getters in each category will be produced for Series 50, and once the line-up is assembled, Diamond Select will create a rare variant figure of one of those characters to round out the assortment!

The first poll, to choose the Main Assault Team, is live right now at Marvel.com, and a new poll will post at that same link every week after that! Keep checking back to cast your vote!

The poll is here:
http://marvel.com/news/story/18697/marvel_minimates_10th_anniversary_fan_polls

POLL #1: MAIN ASSAULT TEAM (Top two will be chosen)

Savage Grey Hulk (bulked up)

Mutated Thing (Extra-Rocky)

Iron Man 2020
Werewolf Captain America
Cyborg Spider-Man

Team X Wolverine

Ghost Rider (Blue, Danny Ketch)

Hydro Armor Iron Man

I of course will be voting for Werewolf Cap and Cyborg Spidey..because the only thing better than Marvel Superheroes is when they are monsters.

The Amazing Spider-Man Video Game Reveals The Rhino

June 26th is still miles away, but video game developer Beenox obviously want to get in on the post Toy Fair buzz, so they've slid one of their biggest baddies front and center. Get ready for RHINO!!

At first glance, Rhino seems like nothing more than an angry, mindless cross of rhinoceros and human DNA, bent on mowing over anything or anyone stupid enough to stand in his way. His mere appearance is known to scare many into believing that Rhino and all cross-species are abominations that must be destroyed. Yet, the few who have looked into his eyes (and survived) have reported their surprise in sensing a degree of humanity there. Almost a sadness.

Unlike all of the other cross-species, which were created after Curt Connors terrorized the city as the Lizard, Rhino was the result of a pet project belonging to a corrupt Oscorp executive with access to Connors’ research. Abusing this access, he applied this top-secret knowledge to black-market dealings.

Without the knowledge or consent of his superiors at Oscorp, the executive forcefully enlisted the help of Dr. Michael Morbius, threatening to end the reclusive biochemist’s career if he refused to help. Morbius reluctantly complied, applying the rhinoceros DNA with which the executive supplied him to a cross-species serum similar in nature to Connors’ own for the Lizard.

The next step was to test the serum, and the executive’s underworld clients were all too happy to provide his oblivious human test subject: a low-level thug named Aleksei Sytsevich. If it worked, the mafia would have a new weapon on its hands; if not...no great loss.

After an excruciatingly painful transformation, Sytsevich was now a hybrid of man and rhinoceros, ready to tear apart anything in his path – the executive’s clients would be pleased. That is, if they are ever to receive their investment…

Obviously, this isn't the big thug bonded to a super suit we grew up with! Stephane Gravel, a Producer at Beenox and Chris Baker, Interactive Manager at Marvel comment...

Stephane: Rhino is one of the most recognizable villains of Spidey’s infamous rogues gallery. We’ve taken a fresh approach to Rhino, inspired by the tone of the movie. His origin is more grounded, more realistic. He’s a grittier, more animalistic and more visceral version of Rhino, his thoughts complicated by a vague sense of who he used to be and overwhelming feelings of fear and sorrow.

Chris: I’m definitely excited about how this new approach manages to honor both the new movie’s universe and the character’s comic book roots. But honestly, the most exciting thing is his appearance, and Beenox has simply created the most fearsome-looking interpretation of Rhino I’ve ever seen. When it comes to character design, these guys really excel.

Toy Fair 2012 : Mighty Marvel Action Figures

We can already call 2012 a golden age for Marvel Comics action figures! Not since Toy Biz had lines on the pegs for Fantastic Four, X-Men, Generation X, Ghost Rider, Iron Man and Hulk have we seen so much plastic awesomeness available for purchase all at once. This year, Diamond Select dishes out a heaping helping of Marvel Select action figures from Marvel movies and comics alike while Hasbro continues their expansive Marvel Universe line alongside Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man movie figures and the triumphant return of 6 inch MARVEL LEGENDS!! Here's a look at what you'll be blowing all your paychecks on...

Let's go from largest to smallest...

Marvel Select continue their action figure domination of comic shops. Honestly, is there anything more impressive hanging in your local geekatorium? On tap for 2012 are...

Toy Fair 2012 : JAKKS Pacific : Amazing Spider-Man

Nothing mind blowing from JAKKS in the way of Amazing Spider-Man merch, as could be expected when Hasbro is doing the smaller scale figures and probably some super sized pieces while Diamond Select is taking on the 7 inch action figure format. JAKKS steps in with possible inventive chachkis like inflatable mini bop bags, a new vinyl type figure and a fairly innovative game (which incorporates Ultimate Spider-Man..but apples and oranges) while on the "most likely getting made" list are two mini figures (The Lizard and Spider-Man), some very basic costumes, a little carrying case and, from sister company Disguise, a basic Spidey suit with new school web shooters! Of course, this article is just an excuse to show off The Lizard once more before you are sick of him. We promise he will not sparkle like a Twilight Vampire in the movie (at least we don't think so).

Dance Spidey Dance

What an excellent time to be a comic book dork! We've got every sort of product you could dream of featuring our most popular characters, a Broadway play, countless films and many more to come with no end in sight. It is clear the planet has gone geek as our culture infiltrates every pour of society on a daily basis. Today, we find further proof of this with a killer video from 2007 (when our infiltration apparently began) featuring Orion Hall and Colleen Vernon performing a dance routine to Michael Buble's version of the Spider-Man theme song. Get ready to applaud uncontrollably...

The Amazing Spider-Man Lizard FULL Reveal!

And you can add "The Full Monty" as our scaly friend lacks purple pants.

Have you been keeping track? We first saw Lizard's face on a Pez dispenser. Then MEGABloks accidentally revealed his full look (albeit in tiny MEGA-figure form) along with plot details including SWAT LIZARDS!! Then your buddies at Idle Hands showed you the face of evil via a remote control for a Lizard Attack Quad which had the creature himself riding. We suggested he looked like Gadzookie (Godzilla's son, natch) but the consensus across the interwebs was he must be a Koopa Troopa from the Super Mario Brothers live action film. Works for me.

NOW Bleeding Cool brings things full circle with a reveal a reader literally stumbled across at his daughter's swim class. Love it.

SwimWays® Dive Characters™ featuring kid's favorite Marvel® Spider-Man™ characters!

  • Play action in and out of the pool.
  • Soft and flexible design.
  • Three characters per package: Two action-posed Spider-Man™ characters and one Lizard™.

Will there be anything huge left to reveal by the time Toy Fair actually starts? Probably not. Probably....not.

Another Amazing Spider-Man Lizard Teaser

This time we get a look at the shape of Lizard's body, courtesy of Diamond Select's Marvel Select Amazing Spider-Man Action figures! Here's the blurb...

Designed and Sculpted by Gentle Giant! A new movie means a new villain for Spider-Man to battle, and Marvel Select is there to bring the Lizard to life! Capturing the top-secret movie look of Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. the cold-blooded Lizard, this 7-inch-scale figure features 16 points of articulation, for endless reptile-on-spider action! Figure comes displayed in oversized collector packaging, and is only available on the specialty market.

You'll recall the last time we saw a toy featuring the Lizard, he was without his signature Lab Coat or Hulk active wear for the professional monster (aka Purple Pants)...or clothing of any kind. Take a look...

This new image seems to give further proof of this naked appearance, though it would be easy enough to hide ripped shorts in the silhouette above. I doubt it though. The Mega Bloks image back up this image to the left. My money is on naked Lizard as the core look for the film.

CLICK HERE for more images of Amazing Spider-Man toys!

Quick notes since there is a debate raging on IMDB: Traditionally, a licensee (ie; the toy maker in this case) will only make a toy capturing the look the character has for the bulk of the film. In the case of Hasbro and MEGABloks, since they have an entire line focusing on this and few heroes and villains to fill it up, there's a chance we'll get 2 looks, but most likely not regular humans (except maybe in the MEGA lines since they can crank out tiny figures til the cows come home.) Anyway, my point is, the blacked out figure and the figure on the quad are probably what you will see Lizard looking like for the bulk of the film..little bit of a snout, no clothing and a tail. Do I think they will show him in the lab coat and purpley pants as a nod to his classic look in comics? Yes, but it will probably be when he first transforms. The MEGABloks sets show him in a lab coat and no pants, and there is no reason for them to make that unless it is in the film. Sure, he is on a jet ski at the time, but we'll just chalk that up to Toy Fun! I certainly don't think Lizard and Spider-Man will have a cataclysmic quad battle either, but I do hold out hope for a dirt bike race. Do I think Lizard will transform further? Absolutely. I think he will be full on raging monster by the film's finale, forcing Spider-Man to make a though choice in how to stop him since he still remembers the man inside. We shall seeeee...

The Movie Green Goblin We Didn't Get

As a full time geek, I'm no stranger to the 'What If..." game. What is Avatar: The Last Airbender the movie was not a fucking travesty on every level? What if movie Batman didn't growl when he talked? We sit around contemplating what could have been, what will never be, and since we are far superior thinkers than those behind the wheel, how WE would have made it all better. Today, we get a glimpse into one such alternate universe where the creators of the modern Spider-Man film were less concerned with making everything ultra realistic and more into creating a love letter to anyone who ever read a Spider-Man comic and went..."WoW." Gone is the Power Ranger-esque ultra exxxtreeeeme villain Green Goblin, ditched in favor of something more fitting for one who has gone over the edge and plunged head first into darkness. Something vile. Something to make you turn the lights on at night. In short...something to FEAR. Dig this.

New creators of the NEW new Spider-Man films...take notes.

It's Spider-Man Vs Time....Again?

While most companies are challenging themselves to work the word "Spooktacular" into every press release, Activision has dubbed this the TIME OF THE MARVELS!!! OK, that is overly dramatic..but they have released two Marvel video games right on top of each other, and that is always cause for celebration! Last week saw X-Men : Destiny explode onto the store shelves. This week, It's Spidey's turn.

Today, Spider-Man™ faces his greatest challenge ever - saving Spider-Man - in Spider-Man™: Edge of Time, available now in North American retail stores from Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI). Created by Beenox - the studio that developed last year's popular Spider-Man™: Shattered Dimensions - players take the roles of both Peter Parker's Amazing Spider-Man, and Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 in a harrowing, action-packed adventure, spanning two timelines 100-years apart in order to thwart a cataclysmic future from happening - and the death of Peter Parker.

"Just like with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Beenox is bringing a fresh perspective to the series with Spider-Man: Edge of Time," said David Oxford, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Dee Brown and the team at Beenox worked closely with Marvel's own veteran writer and co-creator of Spider-Man 2099, Peter David, on a high-stakes narrative experience where the ultimate challenge is not only to save the world, but also save Spider-Man himself."

"We're very excited to bring Spider-Man: Edge of Time to Marvel fans everywhere," said TQ Jefferson, Vice President of Games Production, Marvel Entertainment. "Activision and Beenox have managed to pack more fun, excitement and challenge into this game than their previous hit Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions; and we're eager for fans - both new and old - to dive into Spidey's latest pulse-pounding adventure."

Playing as the two extremely different personas of Peter Parker and Miguel O'Hara, both heroic web-slingers must urgently work together to correct a timestream gone awry, save each other, and prevent the death of the Amazing Spider-Man. With the story's two timelines evolving in parallel, each Super Hero must navigate through "cause-and-effect" gameplay moments, utilizing Spider-Man: Edge of Time's picture-in-picture display where the actions of one Spider-Man can result in immediate, and sometimes unexpected, effects on the other Spider-Man and his surroundings. Players will battle a variety of fan-favorite and all-new villains, including Anti-Venom and Black Cat 2099, using expanded combat abilities specific to each timeline - from Spider-Man 2099's close-quarters brute force, futuristic enhancements and gravity-defying acrobatics, to the Amazing Spider-Man's evasive techniques, upgraded web abilities and ranged tactics, as they race against time to preserve the balance of both worlds.

The game includes an all-star voice cast, beginning with legendary film star Val Kilmer as Walker Sloan; Smallville and V mainstay Laura Vandervoort as Mary Jane; Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoffas Black Cat; "The Spectacular Spider-Man's" Josh Keaton as the Amazing Spider-Man; and Christopher Daniel Barnes, who voiced the iconic Marvel web-slinger in the 1994 "Spider-Man" series, as the voice of Spider-Man 2099.

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB and is available on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Wii™ and Nintendo 3DS™, all developed by Beenox. The Nintendo 3DS edition marks the debut of Spider-Man on Nintendo's newest platform. A Nintendo DS™ version, created by developer Other Ocean, is also available and features a platforming adventure full of unique villains, such as the first-ever appearances of Overdrive, Arcade and Big Wheel 2099, created exclusively for this version.

A Closer Look at the Amazing Spider-Man's Incredibly Complicated Outfit

July 3, 2012 will see the return of your favorite web head, RE-BOOTED for another attempt at a long lasting franchise for one of the most iconic super heroes the world has ever known. I don't think it is too dramatic to say we are all wishing as hard as we can that this series borrows straight from comic story lines, boasts amazing writing and avoids any sort of musical interludes. Sony kicks things off with a slow roll out of images, first revealing the "real world" recreation of Spidey's blues and reds, now made hi-tech as if they allow him to break the sound barrier without splitting a seam and survive a shark bite simultaneously.

The Amazing Spider-Man's new suit actually reminds me of some incredibly expensive basketball sneakers I've seen in the past...or maybe even the basketball itself. When people talk about the over-complication of a super hero suit, I bet they never imagined the many layers that make up this insane Franken-suit which I believe was originally created to give the Jamaican Bobsledding Team a considerable edge at the next Winter Olympics. Now, one would argue that when you take in the entirety of the suit, it isn't that bad..and when we see the man in action we won't care what the hell he is wearing. My answer to this would be..Sony put up pics of the suit in super hi-rez, so obviously someone is very proud of the work that went into it and we should take this opportunity to peek into every nook and cranny. As a Frat boy would say... "He was askin' for it!" Behold, the many universes folded into the Amazing Spider-Man super suit. Try not to go mad as you travel down to his gooey nougat center! I personally don't care that the tribal spidey-symbol flanked in red directs the viewer's eye directly to his junk. If the writing is solid, the action is expertly planned out and the story doesn't dwell too heavily in the soap opera-esque moments that often mire a Spider-Man epic, I'll be a plump kid in a candy store once again. As a bonus, the super close ups provide us with a nice look at Spidey's old school mechanical web shooters! I'm also hoping my Cosplayer friends will be able to use these shots to start their own movie accurate costumes far ahead of the film's release. This raises the biggest question I have for the film makers right now. If Peter Parker doesn't want anyone to know his super alter ego....then WHO THE HELL MADE THIS PSYCHOTIC COSTUME??!! The last one was hard enough to swallow, but this one is INSANE. Suspension of disbelief in over-drive. Nuff said.

The Spider-Man is Dead.. Long Live the Spider-Man!

Yep, Ultimate Universe Peter Parker's grave hasn't even settled yet...but the SHOW MUST GO ON!! Marvel preps a new kid in a Spider motif...

Pop culture history will be made tomorrow as Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 hits shelves and introduces readers to the all-new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man! That’s right, for the first time ever, someone other than Peter Parker will be Spider-Man! But, after the death of Peter Parker, who will rise up to defend the Ultimate Universe? Meet Miles Morales, a seemingly normal teenager from New York who will soon discover that with great power comes great responsibility…and even greater danger! But just what are the secrets behind Miles’ shocking abilities? What’s his connection to the original Spider-Man? And just why does he wear that costume? Courtesy of superstars Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 begins the story that’ll have everyone talking for years to come!

“When the opportunity arose to create a new Spider-Man, we knew it had to be a character that represents the diversity—in background and experience—of the twenty-first century,” said Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor in Chief. “Miles is a character who not only follows in the tradition of relatable characters like Peter Parker, but also shows why he’s a new, unique kind of Spider-Man—and worthy of that name.”

With its inception in 2000, the Ultimate Comics Universe reimagined the world’s most popular super heroes for a new generation and has been critically lauded for its bold, resonant stories. In particular, Ultimate Spider-Man #1 is widely considered one of the most important comics of the century, setting records for trade paperback sales and introducing one of the most popular versions of Spider-Man ever. With the death of Peter Parker in June 2011, all eyes were once again on the Ultimate Comics Universe, as mainstream media and fans alike speculated just who Marvel would put under the mask of this beloved hero. Now, the chart-topping team of Bendis and Pichelli begin the next major chapter of the Ultimate Comics Universe with September’s historic Ultimate Comics spider-Man #1, giving readers a chance to learn the origin of the most important new character of the century.

“The chance for the world to join a new Spider-Man as he discovers what that means in this modern world is one of the most challenging and crazy fun opportunities I’ve had as a writer,” explained Bendis. “The Ultimate Comics Universe according to Miles is completely unique. I can't wait to write every issue and I can't wait for people to start reading them.”

Pichelli added, “I promise, you will fall in love with Miles-- I already did. 'Nuff Said.”

The world’s greatest super hero icon is about to undergo the most groundbreaking reinvention in comic book history—where will you be when the mask is lifted? Pick up Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 tomorrow at your local comic shop or digitally on the Marvel Comics App for iOS devices.

Marvel Minimate-Splosion

As we get ever closer to New York Comic Con, all the little wonderful plastic buddies we can buy there are coming to light. Diamond Select in particular has a couple of new Marvel Comics Minimates sets on tap with characters so obscure and so specific to a particular comic run, they could only be possible in the blocky Minimate format. First up is the Age of Apocalypse Minimates featuring Magneto, Rogue, Cyclops, and Sunfire, exclusive to Action Figure Xpress (booth 1977). AFX will also have a New Mutants set (my MUST HAVE of the show!) This set includes some of the original members Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, and Wolfsbane. Cannonball has a flight blast accessory and Sunspot has extra hands and feet. Very cool set, but shouldn't Sunspot be black with yellow highlights, not the other way around? Odd choice. Previews also claims their own exclusive with Wolverine, Dark Beast, Apocalypse and Jean Grey, also available at NY Comic Con, most likely at Diamond's booth.

Diamond Select also realize that, since their Marvel Minimates haven't been in main stream stores for long, people may have missed the core characters in their most famous looks. On that note, they've got you covered!

"Coming soon to the Disney Store (A DST first!!!) is this special Minimates box set. Featuring Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man it’s the perfect way to add classic versions of all your favorite Marvel heroes to your collection! Look for it at your favorite Toys R Us soon!" So is this a Disney exclusive or just the first time you'll find Marvel Minimates in Disney stores? We think the latter. Looking forward to having more places to buy Marvel merch!!

Their final announcement heralds the coming of Captain America in his own film and to celebrate, they held a contest on the Toys R Us website to pick 4 Captains from throughout history to be included in a boxed set. The winners are World War II, Suspended Animation, Armored, and Reborn versions of the star spangeled Avenger, exclusive to Toys R Us stores.
