NYCC 2022: Handmade By Robots Pushes the Cuteness Boundaries

NYCC 2022 Handmade By Robots Vinyl Figures 12

They've got visible stitching, but they aren't stitched. They've got squishy-looking bodies, but they remain squishless! They've got little buttons for eyes and yet, IT'S ALL AN ILLUSION!! Everything about "Handmade By Robots" adorable creations screams "craft project", but it's all just a super clever art style used to make vinyl pop culture figures that no one ever thought of before. ..well..except for Sack Boy. Since we first spotted them at a Toy Fair booth many years ago, the company has grown into its own and boasts a wide array of characters you'd never think of making cute..from Robocop to Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. Amazing. Check out everything Meghan Lee saw at their booth at New York Comic Con...

WETA Expands Mini Epics Vinyl Figure Line with Battle Angel Alita, Planet of the Apes and District 9

WETA Mini Epics Vinyl Figures Battle Angel Alita
With an explosion of excited fans and a generous serving of subversive humour, Weta Workshop unveiled its first foray into the world of pop culture vinyls at San Diego Comic-Con 2017. The response to our merry band of Middle-earthlings – Frodo Baggins, Gollum, Gimli, Moria Orc and Uruk-hai Berserker – was immediate: WE WANT MORE MINI EPICS!

Which got us here at the Workshop thinking. What other EPIC worlds could we deliver to film fans and collectors of cool stuff across the globe?

Let’s start with the basics, we said.  We’re tackling the A-team: Apes, Aliens, and Angels! We’ve grown the MINI EPICS family to include not only more figures from The Lord of the Rings, but your favourite characters from Planet of the Apes, District 9, and Alita: Battle Angel – each figure as highly stylised as the next.

Mondo Reveals Iron Giant, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Hitchcock Toys

Prepare for your weekly toygazm. Mondo is doing toys! The launch of figures for The Iron Giant, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Alfred Hitchcock are Mondo's first foray into toy collectibles, with the subjects and diversity of design reflecting Mondo's unique passions. The initial offerings include replicas as well as toys from artist-based designs, which can be previewed at San Diego Comic-Con in Mondo's booth (#835).

Toys join Mondo's growing list of pop culture passions in posters, vinyl, gallery events, VHS and apparel. "I am so pumped to announce toys! We've been working on this in secrecy for a year and now it's time to let you guys know about it. We'll be focusing on existing properties that we love as well as working with artists to bring their own creations to life. This is a new area for us, but I resist the term 'expansion' since the goal for Mondo has always been to be a place where artists and designers can work to have their visions realized, whether that's through posters, gallery shows, vinyl, apparel or now toys," said Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael.

Artist Eric So Takes on Marv of Sin City

The masters of two mediums come together with an all-new, limited-edition vinyl figure of Sin City’s beloved brute, Marv! This unique interpretation of Marv was created by Eric So, a master of modern design and a leader in the Hong Kong designer-toy movement. With the guidance of Frank Miller, So has sculpted a thirteen-inch vinyl figure that is unlike any that has come before it.

While best known for his groundbreaking toy designs, Eric So is also an accomplished designer in many other areas, such as men’s fashion and accessories. He is a legend in his native Hong Kong, and has made a name for himself worldwide.

In the same spirit as his previous collaboration with Dark Horse (a vinyl figure of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy) or his Nike-commissioned statue of Michael Jordan, So favors a humorous and cartoonish approach over realism. While Marv is depicted in his customary trench coat, he has been transformed through Eric So’s unique approach to angles and features. Still, the influence of Frank Miller’s signature style shines through.

He-Man Wobbles & Power Rangers Go POP!

Funko are at it again. We're just going to start calling them the Vinyl Borg, because they assimilate all your pop culture loves. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!! Alf..we are looking at you. Today, Funko drops us a line that they are ready to reveal the first of their long awaited Masters of the Universe pieces and surprised us with some killer Power Rangers POP! Vinyl to boot!

First up, we have the Masters of the Universe. He-man and his medieval and yet often high tech defenders of Eternia square off against the forces of Skeletor and his monstrous army of thugs. For years we've gotten a giant helping of action figures, vehicles and cartoons to further the mythos, so it seemed a no-brainer to immortalize the characters further in little plastic statues with bobbley heads. In past months, we were given teases that the Masters would join the ranks of the POP! Vinyl universe as well, and this still seems like a sure thing. There are a lot of licenses that get treatment in both lines, so hang tight for that announcement! For now, take a look at the Wacky Wobblers with He-Man, Orko, Skeletor and Beast Man, all available December 20th.

The Simpsons go POP!

Funko adds to their army of the irresistibly cute POP! Vinyl figures with the soulless eyes of a forgotten orphan with that jaundice gang from Springfield! It has been a very long time since someone did something new and interesting with the Simpsons license, so I'm sure this line of figures and plush is going to go over swimmingly.

Available this November, the 4 inch tall Simpsons POP! Vinyl line will include Homer, Marge, Bart and Krusty the Clown, retailing for about $10 a pop (pun intended). Just before that release, we'll see the launch of 7 inch tall Simpsons plush dolls with Krusty, Homer, Bart, Itchy and Scratchy! Look for them October 20th.

Vinylmation Realizing Disney Afternoon Toy Dreams

If you are just now hearing the word "Vinylmation" for the first time, never fear. You haven't missed the boat entirely, you are just late to the game! Vinylmation is Disney's entry into the world of vinyl art toys. The model is to make a form or shape and release it printed with a wide range of designs. For small companies, the high price point reflects the low number of pieces made for a series. It isn't that you are paying more for the exclusivity of the piece (though that helps ease the pain)...its largely the fault of the factory producing the toys setting the price higher with these lower runs. As time went on, I suppose people accepted the prices as a standard of their collecting, so now when a new company jumps into the ring, it doesn't matter if they have the resources to print items in larger numbers for less money. You're still going to pay 10 bucks for a 3 inch figure! THAT would be the downside.

On the upside, the figures are pretty damn cool and Disney, having a pool of incredible artists at their disposal, is making the most of their Mickey Mouse-like form utilizing characters from their animated worlds as well as original designs you can't help but gawk over. Among the must-have characters are the citizens of the Nightmare Before Christmas world, Chip and Dale, Pluto and a host of other characters in Nerd gear, a two figure set for Pete's Dragon, Kevin Flynn from the original Tron, a series for The Muppets (complete with Pigs in Space), a Star Wars series (Boba Mouse will be mine one day) and a whoooole series just for Disney Villains!! Now Disney finally took notice of all of our 80's cartoon favorites returning, and sometimes re-imagined and probably said to themselves..."Hey..Didn't we make some great shows back then?" Thus, the Disney Afternoon series was born.

The line kicks off with a 2 pack for Tale Spin; that odd show that answered the question "What if the characters from Jungle Book went out and got jobs?" Wackiness ensued. The pack includes Kit and Baloo and retails for around 26 and change via Disney Parks (which comes up empty, so now I'm assuming Ebay?" The next set will be from Duck Tales and includes Launchpad McQuack and Scrooge McDuck! Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers and Goof Troop are on deck for later sets.

If all this wets your whistle you can be further tempted by a Steampunk series and Pirates of the Carribean, all coming soon! Hit up the Disney Vinylmation website for details, sneak peeks and to start amassing your army today!

DC Mez-Itz On The Way

Mezco Toyz is proud to announce that is has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Comics, to create Mez-Itz, Mezco’s signature designer vinyl brand. The deal gives Mezco Toyz full access to the massive DC Universe of characters as well as specific movies, including world-famous superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the vast array of villains associated with these iconic heroes.

The first characters to be revealed to the public will be Batman and The Joker.
The Dark Knight and The Clown Prince of Crime will make their debut at San Diego Comic Con in June 2010; the exclusive two pack of 6inch Mez-Itz is based on the classic comic book characters.

"I've been a DC fan since I picked up my first comic book many years ago. To have access to the DC Universe and the ability to recreate these iconic heroes and villains as Mez-itz is a dream come true!' said Mezco President Michael "Mez" Markowitz

Mezco Toyz plans to release several waves of Mez-Itz each year in a variety of sizes. They will announce the next wave of DC characters at San Diego Comic Con.

Mez-Itz, rotocast vinyl collectibles are cool by design. They features five points of articulation, amazing graphics from Mezco’s award winning design team, and are often packaged in a collector friendly window box.

I wish Mezco a lot of luck with this line. I know plenty of fans have been asking for a DC product comparable to Hasbro's Mighty Muggs, but with that line hitting clearance and slowly disappearing from retail shelves, will there be support for a whole new wave of stylized vinyl toys? We'll find out soon enough.

The Rza Teases Action Figures and Comics

Back in 2009 there were rumblings about the Sky Farm Studios project with the man from the Wu Tang Clan himself, the RZA. Seen most recently in the movie Repo Men and featured on the soundtrack, you'll never call this a "come back". Sooo...does this mean the crew will fulfill my dream of kung fu enabled Wu-Tang action figures? Maybe! The initial announcement of this project included rumbling of a comic and two figures to kick things off..Rza and Bobby Digital..created by Mark Davis, Mike Davis and Paul Harding, creators of the Blokhedz vinyl figures (pic below). If the new figures have half as much style and some killer articulation (which isn't likely but I can hope), I'll be down along side legions of fans who have been waiting for something like this ever since Wu had their medieval kung fu comic book back in the day.
