How do you encapsulate the fun and dorkiness of odd rubber suits that, at the time, made four ninja turtle brothers a little TOO real? You get master sculptors on the job and ensure the paints coming out of China are top notch, delivering a finished product that fans of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies would bow down to. WORSHIP YOUR GREEN GODS!!
NECA managed to make the movie turtles less mascot and more amazing, which is a small miracle on its own merits. Texture covers every inch of their bodies and painstaking paint details make the sculpt pop. You might think a company spending this much to perfect a pop culture icon would just reuse one body and swap out weapons, belts and masks. Not NECA! Pour over the Raphael sculpt and you'll find scars and slices taken out of his shell, no doubt due to recklessly charging into battle. His face is stern and threatening. In counterpoint, Leonardo seems more composed...ready for anything and yet, calm and steady. DID I MENTION THEY ARE TURTLES??!! For a sculptor to convey these things in a toy of a giant turtle which was essentially a big rubber puppet suit, is astounding.
While NECA's quarter scale turtles have all the prerequisite articulation you could want, the nature of his size and sculpt details, along with pads and such make these figures a bit difficult to pose as dramatically as, say, a 6 inch figure, but joints are nice and tight and I didn't have one fall over in the course of this photo shoot. Most of your apprehension in posing these figures is the opening price point and your urge to NOT break those suckers, but the figures seem sturdy enough and have a good range of motion. Just go slowly!
We managed to get our hands on 2 of the 4 turtles offered in NECA's series to give you a very good idea of what you'd be looking at if you pop for a set. NECA have released all 4 brothers...so far. Raphael in his overcoat and hat is due to hit stores this January, so more turtles could definitely be on the way!
