Toy Fair 2014: A Grim Future For Hobbit Toys
Last year, around this time, we featured the first images of several new figures from The Hobbit toy line from The Bridge Direct for the second installment, The Desolation of Smaug. On display were all the remaining dwarves not yet produced (Nori, Ori, Dori, Gloin, Oin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur), Radagast the Brown, Azog and his Warg and Bolg (pre-Weta last minute movie make over) for the 3 and 3 quarter inch scale. 6 inch figure additions included Azog and Radagast.
As December rolled around and the film came and went, those action figure release plans didn't exactly come to pass. So what did show up on retailer shelves? A 3 and 3 quarter inch Mirkwood Hero 5 Pack with only 1 new figure (Thranduil), a repackaged 6 inch Legolas and two new 6 inch figures of Azog and Radagast. That's 3 new figures for those keeping score...a little shy of the 19 figures released for the first film. Bolg squeaked by as part of the first film's 2 packs. No dwarves, no smaller scale Azog and absolutely no sign of the Smaug dragon the Bridge crew was encouraging us to shout for in February of 2013.

LEGO Announce Ghostbusters ECTO-1 & Crew Cuusoo Set
Oh Man. They made LEGO Minecraft, and even though I don't play the game, I was tempted. They created The DeLorean from Back to the Future and I very nearly clicked BUY. Now, LEGO is about to release the Ghostbusters set you've secretly (or not so secretly) wished for your ENTIRE LIFE...and I'm throwing money at the screen. Just...just take it. I need LEGO mini Ghostbusters. Here's the announcement...
"We’re thrilled to take the ECTO-1 and minifigure characters from BrentWaller’s Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary project and release them as the next LEGO CUUSOO set. This is an amazing model, and the set will be a fantastic representation of the cult classic film. Supporters know that Brent put a lot of love into this, and the final model, which we can’t reveal quite yet, will be largely based on his original car design. The final design, pricing and availability are still being worked out, and the set will be released later this year, so stay tuned!"

Sam Kieth & Chris Ryall Team Up For Mars Attacks
There have been many stories told in the Mars Attacks universe, but possibly never one quite like this. Beginning in May, Chris Ryall and Sam Kieth, the team behind The Hollows, join forces once again to tell the story of Mars Attacks: First Born.
First Born, a four-issue series written by Ryall from a story co-plotted by Ryall and Kieth, and featuring art and covers by Kieth, tells a deceptively quiet story of the aftereffects of the Martian invasion: in a devastated neighborhood, a few survivors try to rebuild their lives. One of those survivors is an infant Martian, left behind in the attacks. But was she left behind on accident, or as part of a more nefarious plan? Does nature versus nurture apply to horrible invaders from Mars? These are some of the themes being explored in this series. Also: giant bugs.

Prepare for Pans Labyrinth, The MUSICAL
After years of me suggesting to, just about any Hollywood or producer type that would listen, that Phantom of the Paradise would be a sleeper off Broadway hit, it seems the universe is meeting me half way. Toy Fair 2014: LEGO Star Wars Rebels Reveals
Nuremberg Toy Fair 2014 is underway and LEGO kicked things off with a reveal of their Star Wars Rebels line and the introduction of the little droid who is now flooding the geek news streams, Chopper! Our buddy Stu from Atamaii was on the scene and snapped some excellent pics along with a fun video report.
But FIRST...let's meet Chopper!
In Star Wars, droids are always eager to help out their human masters, drop whatever it is they’re doing when called upon, and sometimes even sacrifice themselves to save others. Right?
Not quite. Introducing Chopper, a lazy, cranky (if ultimately goodhearted) astromech droid, and the latest character revealed from the highly anticipated Star Wars Rebels animated series. "If Artoo is the family dog,” said Dave Filoni, executive producer of the show, “Chopper is the cat." Chopper is an essential crew member of the Ghost, tasked with keeping the starship running and operable for its band of heroes. In reality, thanks to his many “unique” upgrades and customizations, no other alien, human, or droid could handle the job.

Toy Fair 2014: Titan Merchandise Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, The Beatles & More
In the states, Funko have mastered the "down sizing" of popular, pop culture characters into ridiculously adorable Pop! Vinyl figures...that sometimes have bobble heads. In the UK, Titan Merchandise is doing some chibi-ing...some super deforming...some smushing down of features themselves! The line, simply called Titans (which is all sorts of ironic seeing as how they are 3 inch figures..oh those Brits..) and currently includes a horde of tiny Doctor Who characters, but will soon be joined by Battlestar Galactica, The Beatles Yellow Submarine, Alien (!!!), Alien vs Predator and Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters.

Toy Fair 2014: JAKKS Pacific's Giant Size Star Wars Army
This year, some companies went small with new 3 and 3 quarter inch action figures, and some went big with 18 inch action figures...but JAKKS Pacific seemed to have found their niche in 31 inch tall figures that look like they can devour the bulk of your collection! THIRTY ONE INCHES TALL!! That's the size of a small child. This year, they are kicking production on these monstrous action buddies into high gear with a heap of new additions to their lineup.
Today, we explore the Star Wars Giant Size figures JAKKS Pacific has put up for pre-order for 2014. Not much more to say about them other than their names. The figures will include the same basic articulation and excellent detail we've come to expect from the series. If the Luke Skywalker below is any indication of their sculpting talents at work, they are going to be raking in the cash.

Toy Fair 2014: NECA's Divergent Giftware
We know NECA make excellent 7 inch action figures, and have continuously chosen properties we felt were, for the most part, not given the range of products they deserved. They've played with scale, and in the last year, even bumped up their figure size to 18 inches, providing us with a little high end (but still affordable) awesome. Amid all the prop replicas and latex masks and bobble heads, there is one category that has always left me impressed. Giftware. In a world where companies do battle over who might get the latest and greatest licenses up for grabs, squabbling over scale monopolies and sculptural dominance, NECA had the vision to say "WE'LL TAKE EVERYTHING ELSE!" Key chains, mugs, necklaces, magnets, head phones, clothing, journals, pins, bracelets, knee socks (KNEE SOCKS!!), water bottles, mini figures..the list goes on and on. If it makes sense, NECA will put it out there. The giftware wall at Toy Fair, for whatever the latest movie sensation might be that year, is always a sight to see.

Toy Fair 2014 News List
Book mark THIS PAGE for an easy-to-follow list of all our Toy Fair 2014 coverage!
Notes for the non-toy freaks: Toy Fair is a series of global events for toy retailers, manufacturers, industry professionals and the press. These events are closed to the public. Most of what you see here will be new items releasing now, coming soon or awaiting a distributor to import it to your area. I'd say a good 80% of what you'll see can be ordered at your local comic shop through the Previews catalog or from your favorite toy retailer online.

Toy Fair 2014: Hex Bug Battles, Climbs the Walls & Gets Zombified
It's often hard to tell which direction the toy industry will go. Last year saw the "dumbing down" of several action figure lines in favor of a marginally lower price point and a company most known for robotics trying their hand at princess dolls. Amid all these shifts, our universal constant will always be Hex Bug! This crew seems to sit around all day thinking of new ways you can play with micro-robotics on a level that won't decimate a parent's budget. Here's this year's UK Toy Fair showing...

Toy Fair 2014: Transformers 4 Optimus Prime Arrives
Our team has two mandates on the floor of any convention, but especially at trade shows. 1 is to look for excellent, new toys from our favorite lines. The second is to pour over every booth for imagery from new movies we are anticipating. With this marching order in mind, our crew sent over scattered images of the new Transformers logo and packaging, and occasionally got us a glimpse of character designs from Transformers: Age of Extinction!

Toy Fair 2014: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Super Mario & B.A.S.T.A.R.D. at Together+
Sometimes you walk the isles at Toy Fair for 10 minutes and see a lot of excellent people pitching excellent new products, but as a full fledged geek, there isn't much to make your eyes light up. Then you hit that one stand filled with characters from all time periods of your life, presented in new and exciting ways that make you want to just empty your wallet over their heads. Sadly, Toy Fair is not a show for taking home new plastic buddies (for the most part), but we CAN take heaps of pictures so you can share our longing. It's a special torture..among friends.
At the booth named Together Plus, we found a treasure trove of items you'll want to claim as your own, starting with some peculiar little monsters that seemed more suited for the art toy isles in a line called B.A.S.T.A.R.D. (which stands for Bootleg Army Stuck Together and Randomly Designed). From our photos, it is hard to tell if all these pieces belong under that masthead, but we thought they kicked mighty ass, and so we show them to you.

Toy Fair 2014: The Tiniest Transformers, Doodle Jump & Pac-Man at Paladone
We are now neck deep in UK Toy Fair coverage with reports coming from all points, and since the UK booths are often by distributor and NOT by company of production, it becomes difficult to state ownership to anything we can't pinpoint! Last night, one such cluster of photos came across my desk, showing chibi-like Transformer characters in styles ranging from classic G1 cartoon, to movie designs and finally the modern animated series. Not a HUGE deal at a show as massive as Toy Fair but for Transformers fans, still very drool worthy! Hit the jump to check them out...

Toy Fair 2014: New Doctor Who
Our friends over at Action Figures Facebook are getting in on the new toy fun with a nice stack of Doctor Who reveals! Fresh off a giant anniversary and a brand new Doctor to celebrate with plenty of plastic dopplegangers, we were sure there would be plenty to see. Let's dive right in...
"This is a post regeneration 12th Doctor still wearing the 11th Doc's clothes. This will not be his official outfit. I wish they had developed a few more new figure molds but I think it's smart of them to focus more on army builder figures. The Zygon is cool but it would've been nice to see a Sontaran and Silurian too. I like the clawed and special weapon Daleks too. This is all 50th Anniversary and Xmas special stuff so maybe they're working on another new wave after this for series 8 at the end of the year. I hear the 2 unreleased time zone sets are supposed to come out."

Toy Fair 2014 is off and running! NECA wanted to get a jump on the U.S. festivities and posted a sneak preview of their Dawn of the Planet of the Apes action figures today. He is the orchestrator of the ape uprising and now leader of a powerful army as the human race faces viral extinction. ALL HAIL CAESAR!
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. The Raid 2: Berandal Full Trailer
He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.
Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.

The Next DC Animated Film: Son of Batman

Toy Fair 2014: Transformers Transformations Transforming
As we head into Toy Fair season, all the major companies are gearing up to present their best plastics for the year to come. Today, Hasbro gave the hot new geek blog "The New York Times" a sneak peek at their upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction toy line, but more specifically, words on some some massive changes in the design of our favorite robot buddies.
"We can't transform these darned things!" screamed no one... And Hasbro answered!!

Meleficent Trailer #2
The first trailer for Meleficent set up a foreboding, creepy fairy tale of an innocent girl coming face to face with a dark and powerful force in the guise of a bewitching woman (pun intended). Now, a new trailer surfaces, utilizing music that speaks more of wonder than horrors and imagery that mirrors classic Disney over..say..Hansel and Gretyl: Witch Hunters. It's a HUGE shift in tone I don't think anyone saw coming, but maybe this new trailer says more about the film than the previous trailer hinted at? An interesting turn of events, to say the least. Hit the jump and watch...

Best In Geek 2013: Emi Gets Random
By Emilie Noetzel
Much like Andrew, most of the readers of Idle Hands know only that I go to a growing number of conventions and festivals where I do photography and nerd out. To better let you all know me, or maybe be more confused about my randomness, here is my Best of Geek in 2013.

not necessarily books that came out in 2013. I do read a ton of books per year and do tend to forget the “not so
amazing” ones.)
Abarat: Absolute Midnight by
Clive Barker
Clive Barker is a master at weaving tales of horror, terror, and magic. Yes, tales of magic, like this one, the third book in his YA series Abarat. Like the two books that came before, Abarat follows the adventures of Candy Quakenbush through the land of the Abarat. It may be a book aimed at young adults or teens, but it is not too childish or too immature for a full grown up (like this 33 year old) to enjoy. The paintings found in the book add a lot to the story, further fleshing out the characters and land as well as giving the reader a better idea of what the author had envisioned for the story.

How Kids Play Wrestling These Days
We used to say we fear the future our children will inherit. These days, I fear the future I walk into where kids with slouchy pants and unintelligible english run things. Today, I was pointed to a video simply titled "Action Figures Have Sex". Not having any idea of what I might be in for and my curiosity piqued sufficiently, I had to click. What I found within brought about a series of reactions ranging from extremely uncomfortable to hysterical laughter. Two small children playing with WWE wrestler figures with half the dialogue plucked from horrible, semi-adult TV and half, I can only assume, mirroring things the wrestlers would actually say. The result is slightly unsettling at times with moments I was nearly falling out of my chair. Hit the jump and see for yourself...

A Second Godzilla 2014 Toy Arises
So far, we know Bandai will be handling the bulk of the Godzilla 2014 toy production, with NECA taking on nicknacks and "one big item", which we can take to mean a new addition to their quarter scale figure line. Since this sucker seems fairly well sculpted and quite possibly enormous, it could very well be the NECA Godzilla in the flesh...so to speak. In the plastic would be more accurate. Still, Bandai has announced a Deluxe Attack and Roar figure in their toy line, but this seems a bit smaller than that possibly 12 inch piece. It COULD be a larger model just for display..or it could be JAKKS Pacific's 24 inch figure! If you measure the likely height of the "Pending Licensor Approval" sign (at about 5 inches high from my Toy Fair experience), you'll come to nearly (over or under) 24 inches.

Michael Douglas is Ant-Man
Now some of you are confused that an older gentleman would be cast in the starring roll of a major Marvel Studios film (not that there are minor ones). First, let's get the announcement out of the way and then if they haven't addressed it, we will.
The two-time Academy Award-winning actor will join director Edgar Wright and Paul Rudd in Marvel's "Ant-Man," hitting theaters July 31, 2015.

Image Expo's Announcements: The Condensed Version
Image Expo took San Fransisco geeks by storm this past weekend, leaving some to say the comic book company deserves to be listed along the top 3 publishers in America...and some to criticize their creative hiring practices (of mostly white males) may be just as bad as the big two. All crit aside, this was Image's weekend, and they had plenty of exciting projects to announce.
Ed Brubaker (Batman, Captain America, FATALE, CRIMINAL) and Sean Phillips (INCOGNITO and SLEEPER) and Image Comics have signed a five year deal to do anything they want with total freedom, total control, and total ownership over their projects. The first project on this new deal for the award-winning creators is THE FADE OUT, debuting this summer, following the conclusion of FATALE with issue #24.

McFarlane Walking Dead Comic Series Figures Wave 3
Seems McFarlane is stepping up their output of Walking Dead merchandise! Are they fearing a slowing in popularity rise, or worse, a decline? From a collector's perspective, this is the first time in..well..ever..that you could walk into a store and scoop up ANY walking dead action figures. Pegs seem to be retaining Andrea, The Governor and the Riot Zombies from the last TV wave and The Governor and Penny from the last comic wave, at the moment. So does this mean McFarlane are finally meeting demand and shipping enough, are the retailers finally on board and ordering the correct amounts for the rabid, zombie loving public, or are the scalpers finally backing off as the figures hit more stores in greater numbers? My bet is a little bit of all three. Whatever the situation, Comic Series 3 is on the way!

Winter Is Here..and Game of Thrones Isn't Far Behind
It seemed like Season 3 went by so quickly I suffered whiplash trying to keep up. There was the slow, agonizing approach...the premiere...then poof it was over. I'd say the experience was far worse than the lead up and anticipation of any major Marvel movie. WHY DOES IT HURT SO GOOD??!! HBO are a bunch of witches.
Season 4 is fast approaching with a premiere date of April 6th chiseled in stone...which is still a lifetime away. ~cue geeks wailing at the sky~ Funko is looking to enhance your anticipation with the final reveal of their long awaited Game of Thrones Mystery Minis! The lineup includes Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime Lannister, Jon Snow, Khal Drogo, King Joffrey, Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Tyrion Lannister, a White Walker in regular and glow in the dark paints, Dragons Viserion, Rhaegal and Drogon and Direwolves Ghost and Shaggydog.
