Animated Comedy BOYS GO TO JUPITER Opening in Over 40 Theaters

Boys Go to Jupiter
Tomorrow, Cartuna and Irony Point kick off the release for Julian Glander’s surreal animated coming-of-age comedy Boys Go to Jupiter. A rare independent animated feature to receive a theatrical release, the film, which features a stacked cast of comedy icons and rising stars, opens August 8 in New York at the IFC Center and August 15 in Los Angeles at Laemmle Glendale, with a limited theatrical expansion to follow.

NPR’s Planet Money host Jack Corbett stars in his first film role as Billy 5000, a teenager in suburban Florida desperately trying to make $5,000 when his winter break is turned upside down by the arrival of a bizarre creature from another world. It mixes deadpan, absurdist comedy with lo-fi musical numbers—headlined by an enchanting original song by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Miya Folick, who voices Billy’s crush Rozebud—for an animated coming-of-age adventure destined for cult status.

Alongside Corbett and Folick, the voice cast is rounded out by Janeane Garofalo (Reality Bites), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Tavi Gevinson (Gossip Girl), Grace Kuhlenschmidt (The Daily Show), Joe Pera (Joe Pera Talks With You), Julio Torres (Problemista), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Tony Award-winner Cole Escola (Oh, Mary!), Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby), River L. Ramirez (Los Espookys), Max Wittert (High Maintenance), J.R. Phillips (Summer Camp Island), Chris Fleming (Hell), and comedy writer Demi Adejuyigbe.

A standout of the 2024 Tribeca Festival, where the film premiered in the festival’s Viewpoints section, Boys Go to Jupiter went on to play at over 40 film festivals around the world and is Glander’s feature directorial debut. A self-taught 3D artist, animator, and filmmaker known online as glanderco, his path in animation began with Tumblr GIFs and has led him to directing viral projects for Adult Swim, Disney, HBO Max, and Cartoon Network, while his 3D illustrations frequently appear in the New York Times and New Yorker. In 2019, he released the video game ART SQOOL, which has since become a cult hit.

Inspired by Google Street View excursions through the streets of Tampa, Florida, the nostalgia of youth and growing up in the suburbs, and an eagerness to examine the capitalism and techno-feudalism in modern society, Boys Go to Jupiter was self-produced and animated entirely over 90 days on the free open-source 3D modeling program Blender. Peisin Yang Lazo executive produced.
