Playstation VR For Playstation 4 Priced and Dated

We've seen VR headsets like the Oculus Rift ($599) and HTC Vive ($799) get their pricing and go on pre-order and both are starting to ship in just a couple of weeks. Today it was Sony's turn to unveil the final pricing and release date for their upcoming VR headset for use with the PlayStation 4. Coming this October, the headset is $399, which is either going to sound pretty pricey, or pretty cheap depending on how you felt about the Rift and Vive.

For your money you're going to get the headset, the required cables, the breakout box, earbuds and a game called PlayRoom VR. That breakout box allows your friends and family watching on an HDTV to see what you're seeing while using the headset.

What's in the box?
Not included is the PlayStation Camera, which is required for use with the system (RRP $59.99) or any Move controllers (RRP $49.99) which some games may require. Finding these for cheaper isn't too hard, but if you haven't already got some of this stuff you'll have to keep that in mind.

So what's the skinny? Why should you pre-order one when they go up for pre-order tomorrow?

Well, virtual reality is going to be the new hotness, not just in gaming, but in many forms of entertainment. Sony has some of the best developers and movie making talent under their wing, and they will be working with many other external talents in order to justify that price tag.

DICE have announced a Star Wars Battlefront title that will support the headset. Imagine using a lightsaber by waving around a PS Move, or piloting an X-Wing from inside the cockpit. Sony are also promising dozens of titles will launch along the headset.

The PS4 games you already own can be played inside a big virtual cinema for when you want that big screen gaming experience, and the media player will be updated to let you watch 360 degree videos.

I've been dabbling with VR for the last couple of years. As stupid as you might look to anyone not wearing a headset, I promise you... you won't care. Expect to see full coverage of the upcoming Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets in the next few weeks, and if any more exciting news drops at GDC, we'll be doing are best to keep you updated.
