Review by The CriX Files
The Weedhacker Massacre is a clever bit of fun.
“How many remakes of a bad horror movie can you make?”
The question alone made me chuckle and knowing co-creator Allen Danzinger (Jerry, original “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) was involved was enough to want a screener. And I was NOT disappointed.
The film opens with a story about plant farmers, the Gunter brothers. While one discovers marijuana for its functional qualities (Rufuss), the other (Doofus) wants to smoke it and make bank. Naturally, smoker kills hemp and becomes known for his puff. Fast forward 100 years to 2014, where the town’s population of Red Eye, TX, infamous in its own right for their “Gunther Ganja,” is filled to the brim with Gunters.
After a music festival promoter screws over said Gunters by stealing their crops, they decide to kill any college kids they see at the venue. It’s then we meet Willie Wonder (and his magnificent hair) and friends, who arrive to an empty field but decide to stay and party. After being shot by the Gunthers, Willie survives due to his magnificent hair helmet and is dragged away by a mask-wearing, weed-hacker-wielding man who has the same hairstyle.
Fast forward another 10 years, and the bloody events at the music festival and disappearance of Willie Wonder have become the stuff of legend. Several movies strive to retell the gory tale. Now there’s a new group of folks in Red Eye, out to film their own spin of what happened that night. They weren't the first, but they could be the last...
Co-creater/writer/singer/actor Ray Spivey’s writing, combined with Jody Stelzig’s look and pace for the film is what I’d call “Stonervision,” (even for those who don’t smoke) because right around the time your brain says, “Wait a minute, what about that one guy,” the answer appears on screen. And be on the lookout for Danzinger himself as Sheriff Danzinshoos, Red Eye’s acting Sheriff back in 2014.
The film itself doesn’t have a rating, but the material is mostly PG-13/soft R. If you’re familiar with Adult Swim’s holiday films, Yule Log and Yule Log 2: Branchin’ Out, then you’d get why The Weedhacker Massacre would fit in perfectly with their 4/20 lineup.
Everything about this movie works for me: Actors being bad on purpose, great music, clever use of promo products, and super fun F/X…what more do you need?
