Hot Toys Get Expendable

SPEAK of the devil and he will appear! Just when I finish mentioning the beauty that is a 12 inch Hot Toys action figure, i get word that they've just added a new soldier to their growing army. Barney Ross AKA Sylvester Stallone is captured with an amazing likeness in this new piece, painted up with his signature tattoos and armed to the teeth. You'll even get an alternate outfit with this one, which is where the figure transcends to doll. No man or woman on Earth can look cool while changing the clothes on their tiny lil action figure. 15 Second Reviews: Piranha 3D, Vampires Suck, Scott Pilgrim & The Expendables

Sorry I've been neglecting this poor little blog. Once I got back from my geek tour I jumped right into Monster-Mania preparations (see next article for the skinny), which hasn't left me much time to dork around over here. To bribe your forgiveness, here are some new 15 second reviews...

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: I fucking love this movie and beyond saying "It's damn funny" I can't exactly explain WHY its damn funny. I'm not a hardcore gamer, so that's not it at all. SP is visually captivating and randomly hysterical in all the right ways..and having an awesome soundtrack doesn't hurt either. Whatever it is, there's brilliance to be found. I can tell I'll be watching this movie for years to come and still laughing at "I have to pee on her".

The Expendables: If you were to turn of the vocal tracks for JUST the actors, this movie would be way more awesome per second. The writing for this movie is so horrible in counterpoint to some killer action scenes and better still, dream fights pitting legendary action stars against each other, shot in such a way that you can actually SEE THE FIGHT IN ALL ITS GLORY!! That alone, is an accomplishment. Sure, the jokes are enough to make Fozzy Bear want to stab himself in the head, but the the BOOM makes up for it.

Vampires Suck: Yes, its' a spoof movie, but this one follows the Twilight stories so closely, we left the theater with the distinct notion that they'd tricked us into seeing another Twilight movie. I'm sure you weren't expecting brilliance from the comedy, but these guys are so topical you'll need an 13 yr old to translate for you and the rest is just lame. The funniest bits come from the film's Bella and Edward who recreate every facial tick, lip chew, screaming fit, far off "smelt something bad" look and overly dramatic face grab. If that's all you need, go for it.

Piranha 3D: This could be the biggest budget SyFy channel monster movie we'll ever see. The pacing is identical to those "original" films but since you are in a theater and your age has been checked, you'll get heaping doses of boobs and buckets of GORE!! More importantly, the film is shot very well, the 3D works to great effect, the characters are funny enough to keep you engaged (even if you don't care if they get chewed up) and the SFX are pretty damn impressive. An excellent Saturday night!

The Expendables Sneak Peek

THE EXPENDABLES is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as “removing those hard to get at stains.” The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.
