Banksy & The Rise of Outlaw Art Arrives on VOD On Feb 18th

The documentary BANKSY and THE RISE OF OUTLAW ART is set to release on all major VOD platforms (iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, Vudu, Vimeo, and FandangoNow) and US cable platforms (Comcast, Cox, DirectTV, Dish, Spectrum, Verizon, Frontier and other affiliates) in North America on February 18th, 2020, courtesy of Vision Films Inc.

Banksy and The Rise of Outlaw Art finally reveals Banksy’s story, from his roots in a criminal subculture to his rise as the leader of an art revolution.

As the world’s most infamous street artist, Banksy’s political art, criminal stunts and daring invasions have outraged the establishment for over two decades, but despite being one of the most important figures of our times, Banksy has remained an enigma, with little known about the circumstances of his life and work. His rise coincided with the emergence of Street Art, a form of illegal, public art that evolved from the graffiti scene to change the face of cities across the world. Banksy became the leading figure in this revolutionary new movement, assembling a multi-million dollar empire and changing the way that we think about art. Through it all, however, his identity has remained shrouded in mystery.

“Banksy and The Rise of Outlaw Art is really the first film to shed some light on Banksy’s story”, said Lise Romanoff, CEO and Managing Director of Vision Films. “there have been books and documentaries that have touched on various aspects of his work and events in his life, but nothing that’s traced the whole journey. And it’s a journey that is revelatory.”

“I think that there’s a lot of misconceptions about Banksy, the anonymity has a lot to do with that” said writer and director Elio España (Prince: Slave Trade, Down In The Flood: Bob Dylan, The Band & The Basement Tapes). “People don’t think of Banksy as a graffiti artist, for example, and he isn’t one anymore, but his roots are absolutely in the graffiti scene. He doesn’t exist in a vacuum, he’s a product of his background in Bristol and the culture and politics of the time - a particularly tumultuous, but also exciting, time. He’s been part of the graffiti world, he pioneered the street art movement alongside a number of other important figures, and of course he has completely changed the way that art is exhibited and sold. I think that if you understand his story you gain a far deeper understanding of his work”.

Featuring rare archive from private collections and new interviews with: art promoter Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s former right hand man; world famous artist Ben Eine, one of Banksy’s closest collaborators; John Nation, who ran the graffiti project where the Banksy story began; renowned graffiti and street artists Risk, Felix ‘Flx’ Braun, KET & Scape, plus a host of art experts and cultural commentators.

BANKSY and THE RISE OF OUTLAW ART is produced by the team of Tom O'Dell and Elio España (Manson: Music From An Unsound Mind, How the Beatles Changed the World, Rise of the Superheroes, Wartime Crime) and is a Spiritlevel production.
