Horror Anthology THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES

The Lies We Tell Ourselves Graphic Novel
There is a moment, right before a lie leaves your lips, when the world holds its breath. When a choice becomes a fracture. When consequences begin.

GUNGNIR, the boundary-breaking publishing house led by creator and founder Matthew Medney, today announced THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES, a new horror anthology graphic novel that asks a simple question:

What if every lie you told stirred something ancient…watching in the dark?

In this tightly wound collection of nightmarish morality tales, a single myth threads through five cities and five doomed lives: Lyla, the ancient demon of truth, born from the first lie humanity ever told. In Medney’s original creative treatment, Lyla does not punish out of vengeance — she punishes because the balance must be kept. Lies warp reality. Lyla snaps it back.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves spans five cities and five shattered lives, tracing a chain of lies that can no longer hide in the dark, because Lyla is already on their trail.

Each chapter of the graphic novel follows a different character — a music manager in Los Angeles, a chef in New York, a real estate shark in Boston, a Chicago woman hiding the truth from herself, a Detroit automotive employee whose “innocent” shortcuts ripple into devastation, all bound together by the same thread: their lie has harmed someone, and Lyla has noticed.

To bring this world to life, Medney assembled a creative cast that reads like a hall of fame for modern horror and dark genre storytelling.

The book features original stories from:

Matthew Medney (Bobby Lee is DEADWEIGHT, Beyond Kuiper)

Jim Krueger (Justice, Earth X)

Steve Orlando (HELLO DARKNESS, BATMAN)

Brea Grant (Lucky, Torn Hearts, 12 Hour Shift, Dexter)

Rebekah & David McKendry (Glorious, Barstow)

And every terror, every truth, every moment of dread is rendered with visceral clarity by breakout artist Elis Zill, whose style blends symbolic surrealism with the grounded brutality of real-world horror.

The Creators on LYLA, the Demon of Truth

Filmmakers Rebekah and David McKendry describe the project this way: “Horror is a shared language, and we’re absolutely honored to share it with these amazing writers. These stories remind us that the smallest decisions we make in our daily lives can have lasting impacts far beyond us. Choose your path wisely because Lyla is always watching.”

Writer, director, and actress Brea Grant added: “I’m thrilled to be a part of this amazing collaboration with some of my favorite writers in the business. This book feels like the beginning of a franchise people will want to return to again and again.”

And for Medney, both the creator of Lyla and the Publisher at GUNGNIR, this book is personal: “From the moment Lyla appeared in my mind, I knew she wasn’t just a character, she was a universe. Bringing together this dream team has transformed a simple idea about consequences into a full mythology. THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES is the foundation of a horror franchise built to endure.”

What sets THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES apart isn’t just its gore, traps, or psychological dread (though the book gleefully delivers all three). It’s the thematic backbone: Good lies are still lies. Innocent lies still hurt. Beautiful lies can destroy. Bold lies leave scars. And every lie births a demon. This anthology explores the idea that truth is not a virtue, it’s a force. A living thing. A reckoning.

Lyla is not a villain. She’s a mirror.

GUNGNIR continues to cement itself as a home for provocative creators whose work pushes boundaries and carves new spaces within genre storytelling. The publisher has rapidly built a catalog of daring films-to-comics adaptations and bold original IP, positioning itself as a modern incubator for multimedia storytelling.

THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES stands to become one of its flagship horror properties, an anthology that can grow, evolve, and return with new cities, new lies, and new victims.
