COGS Steampunk Expo Rises from the Ashes

To quote Spike from Notting Hill, "I'm going to tell you a story that will make your balls shrink to the size of raisins." There once was an event called the Steampunk World's Fair. Like many events in the New Jersey area, SPWF was run by seemingly nice people who also appeared to be hopelessly befuddled at every turn. At the best of times, most show operation was chaos, with many an unhappy vendor and volunteer. Speaking of volunteers, also like a lot of New Jersey conventions, SPWF relied heavily on a steady stream of volunteer help to run just about everything, including those things they probably should not. It became clear to most that these volunteers were also highly expendable.

Six Flags Great Adventure Erects Life Size Hall Of Justice!! ...and There's a Ride In There Too!

Six Flags Great Adventure DC Comics Justice League Battle for Metropolis RideSo i'm sitting in my living room eating Honey Bunches of Oats with no milk because I am me and in my feed pops up the picture to the left. My brain could hardly handle it. It's that building that LOOKS like the Hall of Justice...right? Nope. ...It's a diorama for toys? Nuh uh. It seems my friend Michael Sprouse has a family member who works at 6 Flags in Jackson, New Jersey and he's there...standing in front of this incredible building...probably just soaking it all in like I am.

Turns out the building houses Six Flags' new attraction "Battle For Metropolis"! The "a 4D, interactive, competitive gaming adventure featuring WONDER WOMAN, BATMAN, SUPERMAN and more." The full name of the attraction is JUSTICE LEAGUE: Battle for Metropolis, and it opens this Saturday! This all sounds well and good, but the most important question is WHEN CAN WE GET COSPLAYERS IN FRONT OF THIS MASTERPIECE??!!

Bitches Get Stitches: Lily Mashes Buttons at A Video Game Con

Hi there, Lily Stitches here! I'm gonna chat about an awesome convention that's pretty dear to my heart called A Video Game Con.

AVGC is run by one of my oldest friends, Paul Solomine at the Parsippany PAL. I remember when this convention was just a thing he talked about at parties, and I'm so happy and honored I got to be a guest again in its second year!

Let's go back to Baby Lily's videogame days.... my first experience with video games was on an airplane when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I was seated next to another little girl who was flying on her own. She was playing a Sega Game Gear. She was probably older than me, but she was super nice to let me look over her shoulder at whatever game she was playing. I think I may have played some Mario games here or there before that, but this is the moment I turned to my mom and said, "I want a video game." So that Christmas, Santa brought me a Sega Genesis with Jurassic Park and Aladdin. This was before the combo pack with Sonic and generic sports game happened so I guess my parents (or "Santa") grabbed two random cool looking games off the shelf...THAT WERE HARD AS ALL HELL. But there was my love of games, blooming indefinitely from fighting random baddies in Aladdin and eating people as a Velociraptor in Jurassic Park to being 29 years old adventuring Rapture and Columbia in Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Bioshock: Infinite.

Free Comic Book Day 2015 at The Comic Crypt + 44 Mini Comic Reviews

Every year, I try my very best to let people know when Free Comic Book Day is coming, encouraging all to grab their kids, friends and strangers who have nothing better to do and head to the nearest participating comic shops to see what guests have shown up to celebrate, what killer sales the store has going on, and most importantly, GRAB FREE COMICS!!! No lie, for those who wake up nice and early and lineup under the burning ball of fire, a fat stack of books await you. Latecomers are left with the scraps, if even that is still available.

This year, I had a multi tiered agenda.

At-At Snow Day

Folks on the West Coast, though they've been getting a little taste of actual seasons this year, still won't know the insanity of all this snow falling from the skies on an almost weekly basis. Our friends in Massachusetts got hit hard, so we are grateful out snowfalls in Central New Jersey were only temporary inconveniences. Today...is another story, as the snow has been falling from the sky since sun up and shows no signs of stopping. Friends across the globe asked to see the snow, so I let the boys out to play for a little bit, as it might be their last opportunity to roll around in the white stuff (as we are promised 50 degree weather next week! Global Warming. WE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED!!) As anyone with a puppy will attest, a moment like this means you break out the camera...and so I did. Enjoy!

The Greatest Burger King In New Jersey

After an exhausting morning pitching toys at perspective buyers at the monthly Wayne New Jersey Toy Show, myself and the lovely, purple haired woman who likes to try and teach me math when we are drunk known as Emi, headed for her apartment in Bloomfield and were advised to take 23 on a straight shot by our dear friend Geepus. We'd not gotten any sleep the night before and with a 4am alarm imminent, a massive, crashing, rumbling thunderstorm sealed our groggy fate. Suffice to say, toy show coffee and muffins didn't do much to sustain us, but sales were brisk allowing a small splurge. ONLY THE BEST (of the dollar menu items) FOR U, BABE! Since gluten is not Emi's friend, a lot of options were out, but a lonely Burger King seemed like an oasis we could both agree on...and as we pulled up, the movie theme and leopard print seats made us very happy about our choice.

Steampunk World's Fair 2013

Ah yes...a day among the dandies and mechanics and robo-armed outlaws and faeries and ...Batmans...and apes....and Mothers of Dragons and Hogwarts Professors.....so naturally, I went as Finn from Adventure Time...Steampunked up of course. Emi is a recovering Goth, so her wardrobe contains slinky little black mini skirts and epic hellraisery jackets, and that would do just fine, so we packed up our leather pouches and Jake shield and headed out for the far off land of Piscataway, New Jersey. Exotic, I know.

The show is a familiar one, so navigation wasn't so difficult. Let me break it down for you. Two Hotels (or Towers to make it fancier) encapsulate the Steampunk world with shenanigans spilling over into outside courtyards and some parking lot space. As you wander the halls, you'll find hotel rooms transformed into mini Shoppes (with an E!) selling everything from corsets to the essential goggles to sheriff's badges and little tiny top hats the ladies seem to love. Larger ballrooms swing open to hold more vendors with ray guns, taxidermied cryptozoology, jewelry and the recordings of any musical act on tap that weekend.
