The Peg Report: New Joes, Ben 10, Cheap Iron Men and the Continual Rape of the Crime Syndicate

As the rains finally pull away from my super soggy central New Jersey, it seemed like a good time to hit the stores and see if anything new hit the pegs. Here's the September skinny...

Toys R Us :
  • Adventure Time fans will note that the small scale plush, even smaller scale PVC figure 2 packs and the role play Finn sword are now in stock at some locations. Oddly, at a larger TRU, they only had the swords in.

  • FanBoy and Chum Chum toys have also hit with two to three full rows of action figures based on the TV show. Are people really going that crazy for this one?? I never hear anyone talking about it. I fear these toys may be joining the small display of Hero 108 toys that never move and look oh-so-lonely hanging there. Never heard of Hero 108? Neither did most people. Most notable was a small-ish (3 inches) scaled Manartica figure which is labeled as a Toys R Us exclusive, featuring translucent plastic. Very nice piece of a hysterically inventive cartoon superhero. These were released by Jazwares, who like to keep these things super secret so you don't know you can buy them. Note: Sarcasm.

  • Star Wars figures were on sale for 6 and change, so I scored 3 army builders I either didn't know about or forgot were coming... Death Star Troopers!! I collect Star Wars figures to complete huge battle scenes so massive, they are completely realistic for the size of my apartment. One of these is the Endor Battle, for which I have a couple of chicken walkers (AT-ST for the hardcore), the shield bunker, a small gang of biker scouts, a cadre of rebel troops, an army of Stormtroopers and a horde of Ewoks. What people often forget is the Imperial Officers and those oddly-hatted Death Star Troopers who vacate the bunker when they think they've got the upper hand. Lucas/Hasbro doesn't release those dome headed folks very often, so they tend to be a little pricey more often than not. Imagine my surprise when I was able to walk into a store and buy three for 6 bucks a pop!! My Endor battle scene should be just about done now, barring the release of more Ewoks. You can never have enough furry, human eating teddy bears.

  • Also scored a set of DC Universe Classics Series 17, the goal being to create the Collect and Connect Anti-Monitor, since I Have no desire for figures of heroes in a look they sported for 1 or 2 comics. Sadly, when assembled, this global threat isn't very large. I'm forced to remember the glory days when we assembled a Sentinel large enough to squash a 3 and 3 quarter inch figure under his heel. What happened to that sense of giving more bang for your buck? Did prices rise so steeply or is there just a more rigid bottom line demanded by the executives? Sad, sad times.

  • Browsing the isles I spotted LEGO Mini Figures series 5. Tiny dots in the bottom of the package supposedly reveal who is inside these blind packaged figures available for a steep 4 dollars a pop, but it seemed this batch was already picked over. I'm only after the Dwarf, Gladiator and Lizard Man AKA Godzilla Actor this time around, so I'm not sweating the hunt.

  • Eileen, compelled to find out what all the hubub around HALO Megabloks was all about, talked herself into two sets with a Banshee and some small vehicles. She also bought a single packed figure. She tells me her two Spartans are in a committed relationship and they ride their vehicle together, blasting the enemy. They seem happy.

  • Also saw a fantastic display for DC Comics Imaginext sets with the Batcave, Joker's Lair, Green Lantern's ship, a crazy awesome Penguin vehicle and more. Snapped some pics of pieces I'd never seen before like a Joker and Two Face Van (from that issue when they started rival food truck companies) and a Bi-Plane for The Riddler. Seems fitting.

  • I'll make a quick note about a re-mixed case of Marvel Universe that is making the rounds, including a Ms. Marvel retro short haired variant. Hasbro has been mixing variants into the new cases, so be on the lookout.

Walmart:

  • Shock of all shocks, my tiny little Old Bridge Walmart got a shiny new case of G.I.Joe figures! I snapped up a Hazard-Viper, Cobra Viper and Sgt. Stalker (who just happened to be mis-named. Anyone want to trade?) If you collected Joes as a kid, these new figures will blow your mind. Every figure is packed with detail and so many accessories it appears they may explode out of the package. If Hasbro put this kind of attention into the Marvel Universe line, we'd be flipping out monthly.

  • I once briefed you on the heinous act of "Toy Rape", where a wonderful individual buys a toy and replaces it with another they don't want or even a pile of junk resembling a figure before returning it for their money back. I've seen Cobra tank drivers in Wolverine packages, Jedi missing their cloak, arms and head and even a Jawa standing next to a bandoleer, staff and rifle where a droid should be. Recently, my locals have been silently expressing their displeasure with the price of the DC Universe Classics Crime Syndicate of Amerika buy replacing their favorites with random DCUC figures and making the return for full price. It seemed we've only had one set for some time now, so I'd imagine this swapping has happened twice! The first switcheroo dropped an extra Johnny Quick into the tray with a Metal Man replacing Power Ring. The second run swapped the second Johnny Quick for a dressed down Creeper and the Metal Man is now swapped with Jonah Hex. Maybe next week the set will be filled with Hello Kitties, Poly Pockets and a Weeble or two?! Madness.

  • Those who can't wait for the return of Marvel Legends keep their ear close to the ground for any new 6 inch Marvel figures. When 6 inch Iron Man toys hit the pegs with the painful price tag of $19.99, the collective moan was heard across the nerdy interwebs. If this was the price Marvel legends would be upon their return, most of us wouldn't be returning to collecting. Oddly, the same figures on Hasbrotoyshop.com are going for $10.99. It seems like every store since then has set their own price , but Walmart's new 13 dollar mark is the best we've seen so far.

  • We don't say much about Ben 10 toys on this blog. Honestly, the designs are very kid friendly and so, I rarely have much that excites me in the line. Bandai realizes there are more than a few adult collectors that might want to dip into the Ben 10 world, so their rotocast "Hyperalien" figure line is just for you. What these pieces lack in super posability, they make up for in sculpting detail and paint applications. Check out Ultimate Swampfire, Four Arms V.2 and Ultimate Aggregor!

*UPDATED! : Nike Takes Your Feet Up to 88MPH

The world of competitive sneakering is one I rarely understand. Occasionally I see a pair of limited edition kicks I have an interest in and give a call to a store to see if they have them...and then the laughing begins. Of all the elitist things to collect...THIS MUST BE THE ELITIEST!! I can't even imagine owning a pair of sneakers that have never tasted asphalt...but I may have considered a pair of "Party Only" sneakers if I could have scored those awesome Freddy Krueger inspired dunks. At any rate, not having my complete and unwavering love has not stopped the manufacturers from conceiving endless awesome creations, often borrowing from pop culture to sweeten the drool factor. Yesterday, Nike showed the world something so pretty...you just might lick the screen...

Presenting the 2011 Nike MAGs. The hunt is on. More details to come!

Side note: Best comment on the Youtube page where this is posted - From gearsdan "I dont know how I did it, but I was finally able to masturbate to this video." Bravo.

UPDATE: Introducing the future of Nike Footwear. The 2011 Nike MAG shoes have arrived. 1500 of the famous, LED-electroluminescent shoes will be auctioned on eBay, Sept 8th - Sept 18th. All net proceeds from the auction sales will go directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Bleeding Cool has reported the auctions go live at 8:30PST but there is currently no link to the account you should be watching. Keep it glued here for more info..until the auctions go live..then it's every geek for him/herself.

UPDATE #2: The NIKE MAG is no longer the “greatest shoe never made.” The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II is being released – and they’re here to help create a future without Parkinson’s disease.

1500 pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG will be auctioned on eBay with all net proceeds going directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each day for the duration of the ten-day auction, one hundred and fifty pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes will be made available via eBay’s Fashion Vault. The auction starts September 8, 8:30PM PST, and will end September 18. Thanks to a previous 50 million dollar match given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, all donations will be matched, effectively doubling the contributions from the auction.

The original NIKE MAG was worn by the Back to the Future character Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, in the year 2015. It came alive, lit up and formed to Marty’s foot. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

The 2011 NIKE MAG - It’s About Time.

HA! So here's a link to the auctions, but be prepared to sell a body part. Kicks in my size start at 4k and are going up to 9k!! There will be no 1.21 Gigawatts on my feet this yr.

DC's New 52 : O.M.A.C. the TECHNO HULK!!

New comic book day has come and gone and now you all can decide for yourselves which of DC's New 52 books rule and which revamps just aren't doing it for you. I weighed in with my thoughts on all but two of the books I didn't have access to in a massive 5 page review spread at The Beat! Here's my thoughts on the bastard child of Kirby we know as O.M.A.C....

In my years of attending comic book conventions and talking to hardcore fans, I have noticed one universal constant. If you say the name “Kirby”, you will see a giant sized, child like grin appear. Jack Kirby’s art style launched a thousand imaginations and even today, amid millions of comic books world wide, is unmistakable. It is with a love for this style and an almost mischievous desire to send us hurtling back to our youth that DC Comics allowed a book like O.M.A.C. be made and exist in the same core universe as your favorite heroes. This comic is INSANELY fun. If the art style itself doesn’t have you dorking out immediately, then the content will surely knock you out of your seat, or at least force you to draw attention to yourself as you attempt to read quietly on the train. Yes…they have invented a comic that forces your geek to the surface for all to see. Beware. Dan DiDio recently described the title character as a “Techo Hulk” and I couldn’t think of a more perfect description. When Brother Eye sets this raging monster with the glowing Mohawk on a target, things get pummeled very quickly. When the target is Cadmus, prepare for some resistance. This book is loud, striking, ridiculous, retro and hysterical all at once. I can’t think of a comic more ready to be turned into an 8 bit side scrolling video game. I’m in 100%.

I mentioned very quickly a conversation with Dan DiDio and now you can see the bulk of it for yourself!

Need more coaxing? DC has dished out plenty of eye candy too! ENJOY!

The Hunt for Stolen Superman Items

Newsarama and some other geek-inclined websites are reporting on the horrible tale of Mike Meyer, a 48 yr old mentally disabled gentleman who was duped and robbed by a man calling himself "Gary". This prize winning douchebag of the millennium befriended Mike and after hearing about his colossal collection of Superman comics and collectibles, set into motion a scheme that left poor Mike without even a cape to call his own. All told, 1,800 Superman comic books and another 5k in collectibles turned up missing. If you could spare a moment, please put out word to friends and owners of comic shops, pawn shops, etc. Mike lives in the Granite City, Illinois area, but really, this stuff could turn up anywhere online, so the more we plaster the internet with this info, the quicker we'll catch this lowlife. "Gary" is a 35 yr old loser (or looks it..that's looks 35..and looks like a loser no doubt) with dark hair and a goatee, driving a silver or grey car.

Here's my promise. If this guy isn't found and Mike doesn't recover his treasures, I'll send him every Superman I own. Count on it. I'm posting this on my blog so that if you should hear a follow up on the story that isn't favorable, please let me know and Mike will get an awesome box for Christmas.

More Predators Join the Hunt

The Predator line continues! NECA have wrapped up their Predators movie line and are moving onto the “Lost Tribe” from Predator 2. Future releases include the City Hunter; the feature Predator from the movie along side all the Preds from the final scene of the film. These are all new bodies with more and better articulation. Expect these to drop in waves of 3 with variants of the main Predator throughout with masked and closed mouth versions accompanying the Shaman, Stalker, Guardian and more to complete the 8 from the final scene. Pre-orders for the first three are beginning to pop up online, including the City Hunter (unmasked), Shaman and Boar Predators. There also seems to be a 2 pack on the way with an active cammo Berserker and Masked City Hunter, as well as a brand new 18 inch "Gort" Predator. Happy hunting!

The New 52 : Week 2 Mini Reviews!

We've got 11 reviews posted to Heidi MacDonald's THE BEAT! The roundup includes..

Action Comics
Animal Man
Batgirl
Batwing
Detective Comics
Hawk and Dove
Justice League International
Men of War
O.M.A.C.
Stormwatch
Swamp Thing

As Heidi points out, I'm no hardcore comic reader and I'd all but deserted DC Comics when Nightwing became Batman and they made Green Arrow a killer, so you might list me as one of those lost readers DC wants to win back. 11 books later and I'm shocked to holy hell. The new 52 ranges in style from gritty and blood soaked to balls out ridiculous fun! They even found new ways to tell old stories we never thought could be reinvented. THIS is the experiment we've been waiting for and I seriously hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. At any rate CLICK THIS LINK and dive right in!

If you'd like to see more detailed reviews of the books like we did for Batgirl, Animal Man and Justice League International, give a shout and be loud!

Apollo 18 Reviewed

I'm glad it seems some of you found some joy at the movies this weekend because I sure as hell did not. Apollo 18 turned out to be Paranormal Lunar Activity minus all the tension, likable characters and ability to conjure little more than a cheap jump scare. Shark Knight proved you CAN make a film with giant killer sharks boring!! What could have been a hysterical, over the top, wonderfully gorey mess turned into a serious thriller with a sub plot and folks racing around seeking rescue. Lame. At any rate, we tackled Apollo 18 for Dread Central, so CLICK HERE to dive right into the review..and then warn a friend.
