BEA 2014: The Star Wars Report: Rebels, LEGOS, Jeffrey Brown & More

If you've read our last two articles plucked from the labyrinthian alleys of Book Expo America, you are starting to get the idea of how intensive this show gets, especially if you are looking for fun news to bring back home and share with the masses! We keep a running list in our heads of the topics we are gunning for, but we always make sure to scan everything we can, as there are surprises everywhere. It's like a live DVD Easter Egg hunt. One topic we have NO PROBLEM spotting around the show is Star Wars, which has no signs of slowing down, what with the new Rebels cartoon getting ready to air, and Jeffrey Brown's emencely popular children's book series (read mostly by adults I'm sure) going strong, as just 2 examples. With new films on the horizon, publishers know where to put their time and effort! We've got a lot to show you so let's get started...

NOTE: Look for the publisher's name after the title to help you track down the book. We've also added links (when we can) so you can jump right into Amazon and buy the books without all the hunting! Also note that Amazon's prices jump up once the book is released, so take advantage of pre-order prices.

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (Abrams): In this funny, uncannily wise portrait of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class and of the greatness that sometimes comes in unlikely packages, Dwight, a loser, talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren’t strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise and prescient. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight’s classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, he assembles the case file that forms this novel.

So far the series is 4 volumes deep with a bonus crafty book to round things out.

Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy (Abrams): For the first time, Lucasfilm has opened its Archives to present the complete storyboards for the original Star Wars trilogy—the world-changing A New Hope and its operatic sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi—as well as never-before-published art from early conceptual and deleted scenes.
From the opening chase above Tatooine in A New Hope to the Battle of Endor in Jedi, this book presents the visual inspiration behind now-iconic moments. Readers can finally see a full set of storyboards by legendary artist Joe Johnston, as well as early boards for Episode IV by Alex Tavoularis and for Episode V by Ivor Beddoes, rarely seen Episode VI boards by Roy Carnon, and Ralph McQuarrie’s never-before-seen storyboards for Episode V.

Star Wars Book Set: The Jedi Path and Book of the Sith (Chronicle): Due out August 2014 - This box set brings the light and dark sides of the Force together for the first time. The Jedi Path is the ancient training manual that has educated and enlightened generations of Jedi, including Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker. They have handwritten their comments into this text, the only remaining copy in existence. Book of Sith is a compilation of six legendary dark texts gathered and bound together by Darth Sidious, and featuring comments from Darth Vader, Mace Windu, Darth Maul, and others. This deluxe edition contains an exclusive portfolio with two prints, each depicting a prominent figure from either side of the Force. With these two titles, students of the Force can study and more fully understand the complex powers of good and evil.

Star Wars - the Bounty Hunter Code (from the Files of Boba Fett) (Chronicle): Due out August 2014 - An illustrated guide for all bounty hunters, containing the secrets of the hunt of this misunderstood profession. As well as the bounty hunter philosophy, it also includes discussions of armour and weaponry.

Star Wars Costumes (Chronicle): Due out October 2014 - Who can forget the first time Darth Vader marched onto Princess Leia's ship, in his black cape and mask? Or the white hard-body suit of the stormtroopers? Or Leia's outfit as Jabba's slave? These costumes—like so many that adorned the characters of that galaxy far, far away—have become iconic. For the first time, the Lucasfilm Archives is granting full access to the original costumes of episodes IV, V, and VI, allowing them to be revealed in never-before-seen detail. In over 200 new costume photographs, sketches, and behind-the-scenes photos and notes, based on new interviews, fans will get a fresh perspective on the creation of the clothes and costume props that brought these much-loved characters to life. Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy affords both new and longtime Star Wars fans an intimate look at the unforgettable costumes from this classic series.

Goodnight Darth Vader (Chronicle): Due out this July - It's bedtime in the Star Wars galaxy, and Darth Vader's parenting skills are tested anew in this delightful follow-up to the breakout New York Times bestsellers Darth Vader™ and Son and Vader's™ Little Princess. In this Episode, the Sith Lord must soothe his rambunctious twins, Luke and Leia—who are not ready to sleep and who insist on a story. As Vader reads, the book looks in on favorite creatures, droids, and characters, such as Yoda, R2-D2, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett, and many others as they tuck in, yawn, and settle down to dream. As ever, Jeffrey Brown's charming illustrations and humor glow throughout, playing on children's book conventions to enchant adults and kids alike.
