Described as the world’s first side-scrolling film, The Waves of Madness is the latest mind-bending project from cult writer/director Jason Trost (The FP series, All Superheroes Must Die). A visually arresting blend of classic horror influences and retro gaming aesthetics, this DIY tour-de-force has resonated deeply with both genre lovers and aspiring filmmakers around the world-proving that bold ideas, raw passion, and pure creativity can overcome any budget.
Shot for just $20,000 in a single studio apartment with a crew of three, The Waves of Madness is a testament to the power of independent filmmaking. Trost not only directed and starred in the film- alongside Ryan Gibson and Tallay Wickham-but also completed the entire post-production himself in Final Cut Pro, using practical effects, in-camera trickery, and hand-built digital matte backgrounds to evoke a dreamlike, side-on horror world. It’s a movie that looks like nothing else- and couldn’t have been made any other way.
The story follows a lone special agent investigating a distress call from a global cruise ship, only to find it eerily abandoned, crawling with warped creatures, and haunted by a reality-bending force that threatens to shatter his mind.
“I wanted to make something that felt like it crawled out of another dimension,” says Trost. “This film is for anyone who's ever dreamed about making a movie with nothing but a crazy idea, a few good friends, and the will to see it through. The Waves of Madness is proof that you don’t need a big budget to make something unforgettable-you just need vision.”
As a fourth-generation filmmaker, Trost has filmmaking in his blood. Raised on movie sets and trained by his father, effects wizard Ron Trost, Jason has spent nearly two decades perfecting his maverick, hands-on approach to cinema. The Waves of Madness is the culmination of that journey-a pure shot of unfiltered genre cinema from a director who refuses to play by the rules.
The Waves of Madness is now available to rent or own on digital platforms and releases on Blu-ray June 4.
