As The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon heads toward its Season 3 finale this Sunday, October 19, on AMC, fans can expect both closure and more questions left unanswered. Speaking during a packed press conference at this year’s New York Comic Con, series star Norman Reedus joined executive producers Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, and David Zabel to reflect on the show’s current seven-episode season and offer a glimpse into the fourth and final chapter of Daryl’s journey through post-apocalyptic Europe.
AMC recently confirmed that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will return for a fourth and final season, bringing to a close one of the most visually and emotionally ambitious entries in the Walking Dead universe. But before that curtain falls, this weekend’s finale promises to deliver both resolution and revelation.
Finding a Better Way to Live
When asked what he hopes will linger with fans once the Season 3 finale fades to black, Reedus pointed to a key line of dialogue that echoes the emotional evolution of the show’s protagonist.
“There’s dialogue introduced coming out of the Chunnel that says, ‘Look, all we do is run and fight. There’s got to be a better way to live.’” Reedus shared. “As the characters get older and the world gets more settled in the apocalyptic situation, there are people around us making it work. That storyline really sets up next season.”
It’s an idea that captures how Daryl Dixon has evolved beyond its undead origins, into a story of community, endurance, and the small glimmers of hope that remain.
No Fear of Franchise Fatigue
While The Walking Dead universe now includes several spinoffs, including Dead City and The Ones Who Live, executive producer Greg Nicotero brushed off concerns of “franchise fatigue.”
“At its height, The Walking Dead was making 42 hours of television a year,” Nicotero explained. “We’re now making decidedly less. Right now, we’re emphasizing these classic characters in very different circumstances and experimenting with new ones.
If you look at Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who Live, they’re very different shows. What they have in common are characters people love, but the shows have very different stories and values.”
Filming Across Europe
Unlike earlier installments, Daryl Dixon trades the forests of Georgia for the ruins of France, England, and Spain. For Reedus, that shift has been creatively rejuvenating.
“They really love the show in Spain, and in Europe in general,” he said. “It feels a lot like the earlier seasons of the flagship show. I’ve been chasing that lightning-in-a-bottle feeling ever since.”
The European setting has not only offered stunning landscapes but also inspired genre-bending storytelling. As showrunner David Zabel revealed, the writers intentionally leaned into the show’s Western tone this year by filming in Spain, a country that once hosted Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns.
“We thought, ‘What would happen if Sergio Leone made an episode of The Walking Dead?’” Zabel said with a grin.
“We watched Once Upon a Time in the West and a couple other Sergio Leone movies” before filming. That led Zabel and the show’s writers to “combine these (Western) ideas with new pockets in the apocalypse that we hadn’t told before. That’s how we came up with the idea of the leper colony episode.” Zabel added.
The Enduring Bond of Daryl and Carol
After more than a decade and a half, Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier remain the emotional core of the Walking Dead franchise. Their shared trauma and mutual resilience have created one of television’s most authentic friendships.
“Both of these characters are victims of abuse, which is the common thread that brought them together in the beginning,” Reedus reflected. “You can hire any two actors to play characters that close, but you wouldn’t necessarily feel it like you do with Daryl and Carol. It’s a very genuine, earned relationship.”
Gimple agreed, adding: “Daryl and Carol are the joy of television. You can’t plan those discoveries. When they did their first scene together, we couldn’t believe it.”
Reedus recalled that very first encounter on set: “In our first scene ever, Melissa [McBride] was supposed to pickax her husband. I kept dipping the pickax in more blood and guts, and finally she just said, ‘Give me that!’ I was like, oh, I like this girl.”
A Universe Still Connected
Despite multiple spinoffs, Gimple emphasized that the franchise’s various stories remain spiritually linked, and perhaps, someday, literally connected.
“Bringing all the characters together is a dream,” he admitted. “It’s not a dream that can’t happen, but right now it’s just in the lab. You never know what could happen, but that’s definitely something we’re going to try to explore someday.”
Loss and Legacy
Death has always been a defining element of The Walking Dead, and the creative team reflected on the emotional toll of saying goodbye to beloved characters.
“For me, Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) was a tough one,” Gimple said. “She brought amazing things to the show…but this is a road show, so unfortunately we’ve had to leave some characters behind.”
Zabel agreed, noting the tragic irony of humanity being its own worst enemy.
“Most deaths in this show weren’t from zombies, they were done by other humans. For me, Hershel’s death (Walking Dead - Season 4) was really powerful.”
Looking Ahead to the Series Finale
While this Sunday’s episode will mark the end of Season 3, Gimple promised that it will also serve as a bridge to the final season.
“You’ll feel like you’ve got to the end of a journey for both Daryl and Carol,” he teased. “You’ll see France and Spain come together in ways that are both happy and scary. There’s closure, but also a sense that the world continues.”
As the creative team begins filming the final two episodes of Season 4, their goal is clear: to give fans a farewell that feels both complete and hopeful.
“We have a really good setup that will make the audience think this was a great journey I went on for four years,” Gimple added.
For a show about the undead, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has never been more alive.
