SDCC 2015: Science Channel's Raiders, Raptors and Rebels: Behind the Magic of ILM

Fans will get to see exclusive clips and receive unprecedented access behind-the-scenes at Industrial Light & Magic, as science and creativity give birth to some of today's top films. The secrets behind AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, STAR WARS, JURRASIC PARK, and many more will be revealed during this once-in-a-lifetime panel. Join Science Channel as they celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Industrial Light & Magic at this year's Comic-Con like no one else can. Come see exclusive footage and hear from some of ILM’s finest featuring Lorne Peterson, John Goodson and Jeff White at this VIP experience where the science behind the movies is unveiled for the first time ever.

PANEL
Lorne Peterson is one of the original members of Industrial Light & Magic, having been hired by George Lucas to create the models for Star Wars. In 1978, Peterson was invited by Lucas to move to northern California to oversee the production of models for The Empire Strikes Back. Since that time, he has worked on most of Lucas' films, as well as those of Steven Spielberg. Peterson was honored with an Academy Award and a British Academy Award for the special effects work in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Now retired, he is a legend in the visual effects industry.

John Goodson: Digital Artist. Goodson joined ILM in 1988, and has served as chief modelmaker, model project supervisor, art director/designer and concept modeler. His credits include the Academy Award-winning Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Transformers, Star Trek VI – VIII, Back to the Future II, The Abyss, Ghostbusters II and the Star Wars Prequels.  He earned a Visual Effects Society nomination in 2014 for his work on Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Jeff White: Visual Effects Supervisor. Jeff White joined Industrial Light & Magic in 2002 as a creature technical director where he worked on a variety of films including: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events, War of the Worlds, and Star Wars: Episode III “Revenge of the Sith”. White is also the co-creator of ILM’s well-known Block Party creature rigging system, which automates the time consuming process of complex character rigging. On Transformers he served as Digital Production Supervisor. In 2012, White served as the ILM Visual Effects Supervisor on Marvel’s blockbuster film The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon and received both an Academy Award and BAFTA nomination for the work. After a stint supervising the early work on Michael Bay’s latest installment in the Transformers franchise, Jeff assumed the role of Visual Effects Supervisor on Warcraft, based on the legendary video game by Blizzard Entertainment.The film is due for release in 2016.

MODERATOR
Cara Santa Maria is the panel moderator and also featured in the special. She has dedicated her life to improving science literacy by communicating scientific principles across media platforms. Cara previously worked as a co-host and producer on the Pivot TV nightly live television show, "TakePart Live." Before that, she was the senior science correspondent for The Huffington Post.
