NYCC 2026: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel & Firefly Launching in Early 2027

NYCC 2026 Dynamite Entertainment Buffy the Vampire Slayer Comic Book
As announced and solicited earlier, the response from fans, retailers, press, and beyond for the next era of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comics spearheaded by superstar scribe Kelly Thompson has been incredible. Due to multiple factors from creative and publishing sides, Dynamite Entertainment announces that both titles are now planned to kick off this coming March. Additionally, fans will be blasting off on new adventures in Firefly by Mark Russell and Lorenzo Re starting in February.

The first issue of the new comic series by Kelly Thompson and Stephen Byrne is set to release March 10, 2027.

Her companion Angel series, starring the dashing vampire detective drawn by Giulia Giacomino, will follow within the same month. The twin titles are intertwined for their initial stretch, making each issue of both essential to follow Thompson's ambitious epic.

Writer Kelly Thompson's story for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel has evolved and become more ambitious, so it was deemed best to take a step back and up the page count to meet the story and deliver the best possible product for fans. Buffy #1 and Angel #1 will have significant story page increases from average issues — at no additional cost to readers or retailers.

Buffy #1 features 35 story pages, followed by 32 story pages for Angel #1. Both books will be released as 48-page comics, still priced at Dynamite's standard $4.99. Dynamite Entertainment has decided to resolicit these titles, with the support of the creative teams, to ensure that these expansive sagas get off to the best possible launches.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice some censoring on the Angel #1 cover by Clayton Crain, which includes a massive first appearance for a new foe known as Leviathan! Fans will have to tune into the comic series in March to learn what he looks like and start to follow his story. An even bigger reveal is being held close to the vest too, that will shatter the Buffy fandom in shock when they get their hands on the first chapters...

Additionally, with the resolicitation timing, editor Nate Cosby is assembling even more gorgeous variants for collectors to choose from, including fun options like connecting covers across both books. Even more exciting updates are around the corner for Buffy and Angel comics.

"The first thing I ever tried to seriously write when I was first trying, was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spec script. So, to say this is a dream realized… at least from a certain angle, is deeply true," said writer Kelly Thompson. "It’s critical that readers read both Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 and Angel #1, as those two books together sort of 'set the table' for this new situation our characters find themselves in and launch how they’re going to be dealing with it. It’s going to be a much more complete and rewarding reading experience to read the books together for at least the first arc. And part of the reason for doing that is because comics are so much more flexible."

In addition to the move of Buffy and Angel, the hotly anticipated return of Firefly comics to readers' pulls is now set for launch in April. Eisner Award-winning writer and longtime superfan of the show Mark Russell is teaming up with rising star illustrator Lorenzo Re (The Terminator) to craft new episodic adventures of Mal, Zoe, Wash, and the whole beloved mythos.

"I think Firefly was what first exposed me to what a hollow concept genre can be," said writer Mark Russell. "What you really want to do is to create a cast of characters that, as different as they may be, as much as they may not like each other, only to realize how much they need each other to survive. Which is true of all of us. And, just like the show, life is sometimes a western, sometimes a rom-com, sometimes darkly funny, and other times scary as hell. That’s what you want to capture."

Fans are encouraged to make sure they're preordering all these top titles as they are officially resolicited in the coming months, to make sure they don't miss out on thrilling tales.
