So Playmates rings up and says WE HAVE THE VOLTRON LICENSE!! We want to send you Voltron toys!! Obviously there is YAYing and happy dancing. I make suggestions including "Let me know when that big sucker is coming because i'll need to book a plethora of time to pour over it and table a thousand pictures. Exactly 1 thousand." Then they say they can only send over the basic figures, you are getting 2 of them. ENJOY!! This can be a real bummer, as I am a poor lad and can not afford the fancy massive Voltron gracing store shelves...but then I have a flashback when the toys actually arrive. Remembering being poor little Paul who also couldn't afford the giant Voltron, but managed to save up some squirreled away arcade moneys for what was most likely a bootleg Voltron from the Te-Amo on the corner of 15th and Avenue U. He wasn't a massive, interconnecting robot, but he was mine.
Holding Playmate's basic Attack Voltron with the projectile lion fist gave me those feelings once again, and I could see how an inexpensive toy like this could be the favorite thing in a kid's collection for years to come. Make no mistake, this is NOT the selection for the uber collector looking to make Voltron pose in a jumping, blazing sword wielding stance. I'd be surprised if either of these figures has more than 6 points of articulation, but for 10 bucks retail, you'd be hard pressed to find something more fun!
Seen here is Playmate's Voltron: Legendary Defender Attack Voltron and Red Lion, both in the previously mentioned 10 dollar basic range, careful not to skimp on the details, mindful of play value for kids and very courteous of mom and dad's wallet!
Attack Voltron stands about 5.5 inches with around 10 pts of articulation if you count his back wings. His lil green lion head fires on attackers!
The Red Lion is supposed to be "scaled to" 5.5 inches, but I can't wrap my brain around that. He's got articulation in his hips, knees, tail and jaw, which is activated by a button on the back, which also fires his plasma projectile. Note that the button only pops the mouth open if you close it first. He doesn't have bitey action!
Voltron: Legendary Defender figures may not be for uber collector fans like the boy-man I have become, but the lil Paul inside of me can't help but love what's been created here. Buy these for your little geeks today!
Special thanks to Playmates for providing the Voltron figures!
