SDCC2022: Green Lantern Premiere, 2023 DCU/DCA Movies Slate Announced

DC Universe and DC Animated Movies for 2023

It was Christmas in July as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment gave a gift, then tossed in a few surprises at 2022 Comic-Con International this past weekend.

The initial gift -- the World Premiere of "Green Lantern: Beware My Power" -- came on Friday night as the enthusiastic Ballroom 20 audience was treated to the first public screening of the latest entry in the 15-year history of the DC Universe Movies. The screening was followed by an exciting, informative and oftentimes funny panel discussion amongst actors Aldis Hodge (John Stewart/Green Lantern), Jimmi Simpson (Green Arrow), Jamie Gray Hyder (Hawkgirl) and Brian Bloom (Adam Strange) alongside the filmmaking quartet of executive producer Butch Lukic, director Jeff Wamester and co-screenwriters John Semper Jr. & Ernie Altbacker. Publicist Gary Miereanu served as moderator.

Idle Flashbacks: Green Lantern Interviews at SDCC 2010

San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Green Lantern Press Junket with Ryan Reynolds and Black Lively
Today, in honor of Ryan Reynolds' birthday, we travel back to 2010 to another steamy San Diego Comic-Con and the hotel press junket for the highly anticipated GREEN LANTERN MOVIE!!! I was very happy to be allowed a spot in a room packed to the gills, for my lil press outlet. Highlight of this one is when a fellow geek reporter started his question off with "Mr. Reynolds, I do fear your power, Green Lantern's light", which was met with he smiles and laughter you'd expect from a crew that actually appreciates the fanbase of a comic their movie is based on. Sometimes, you just have to say the thing. I once asked Zack Snyder if anyone had sex in the Watchmen Owl Ship while on the floor at SDCC. I mean, if I had money to burn to pay off the security guards, I could find someone in a heartbeat to do the deed just for bragging rights alone. HOW COULD YOU NOT GO FOR IT?! Granted, I was three drinks in, but I totally knew what I was doing.

NYCC: HBO Max’s Green Lantern Series Taking Shape

HBO Max Green Lantern TV Series
The Green Lantern TV Series, which was first announced last year, has been given an official series order for ten one-hour episodes. From DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott—Earth's first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man—and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Killowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.

DC Comics Block Figures Sneak Onto Toy Shelves

It's rare these days that a licensed product could slip into retail stores without rabid fans of said license freaking out about it and blowing up the internet. With that in mind, I was shocked to find few people had known Underoos had made a fairly silent come back when we ventured into the heart of darkness (AKA Hot Topic...which is a dark store..not being funny!) and shot those pics of He-Man, Wonder Woman and Captain America skivies. That was a very short time ago, but now we are constantly wondering what other licensed merch might be sneaking around out there just waiting to be discovered. It wasn't long before we found more fun stuff!

The Fate of Your DC Nation

Earlier we ran an article about Cartoon Network's 2013 lineup and all of you eagle eyed DC Comics fanatics immediately realized there was a giant hole in the listings. Young Justice and Green Lantern were missing. This lead some people to believe the shows had finally gotten the rumored axe we'd been dreading, replaced by two new shows, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I dropped my contacts an email and this was the response from Turner...

"Young Justice and Green Lantern are still in premieres and will continue with the current story cycles. We are committed to bringing excellent action fare, and look forward to continuing DC Nation this year with new shorts, interstitials, and of course, Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go!"

So while we may be still mourning the all too soon loss of the Young Justice toy line, it appears the TV show will keep marching on....for nowwww (cue Vincent Price laugh).

Geoff Johns Previews the 3 & 3 quarter inch Green Lantern Figure Line

G4 hit the DC Entertainment offices and got a look at some upcoming collectibles while chatting about new video games and anything else they could squeeze out of their host, Geoff Johns. If you check out the vid below, at 1:43 or so you'll see the first bits of 3 and 3 quarter inch Green Lantern figures we've been teasing for a crazy long time now....and a proposed Green Lantern central power battery playset we knew nothing about!! Here's hoping we get a look at this and more at San Diego Comic-Con this week, but for now, here's a quick look...

In the vid, we also get a look at a beat up cardboard Hall of Justice display for the Just Us League of Stupid Heroes figures...so maybe they'll be making this for retail....or maybe it is just an awesome display for Comic-Con? We'll know the answer in days.

DC Comics Outs Green Lantern

Again...and I can't stress this enough...I really don't think a good 80% of comics readers care about this at all, but it is good that the top two publishers of comic books today are waving their "Support LGBT" flags at this moment in time! DC Comics had been teasing a long established character would be bursting forth from the proverbial closet, and not just to reveal his all too snug fitting outfit. DC's The Source scooped themselves today...

Today, we are pleased to announce that the mystery about the identity of the character in question is over. Appearing in next week’s EARTH 2 #2, Alan Scott is the only Green Lantern of Earth 2. A team leader with a Type-A personality and an appetite for justice, Alan also happens to be homosexual. And while his origins won’t be shown in full detail until issue #3, we can tease that a traumatic event will serve as the catalyst for him assuming his superhero identity as The Green Lantern.

Alan’s storyline is a direct result of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 and DC’s commitment to taking a fresh look at its characters. Originally a Golden Age character whose previous continuity spanned from the 1940s through modern times, Alan was a charter member of the Justice Society. As a character, Alan is one of the oldest within DC Comics’ pantheon (being created in 1940). In EARTH 2, he is getting an update for contemporary times to reflect the world we live in. He is younger, has an updated costume and is being introduced to DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 for the very first time. It is also important to note that while Alan is a gay man, his sexuality is merely only one part of his multi-layered character.

“I’m very proud to be introducing Alan Scott into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52,” said series writer James Robinson. “He was my favorite Golden Age character and one I’m very familiar with so I’m really excited to be updating him for a contemporary readership. However, I think old-time readers will be pleasantly surprised by how, in some ways, I'm trying to show the ‘classic’ Alan Scott at the same time. He's still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He's still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Oh, and on Earth 2 there is only one Green Lantern, so Alan's title is The Green Lantern. Alan's sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2.”

Long time fans are a little upset at the move, and it doesn't have anything to do with the Gayness. Ever watch a forum light up over the announcement a character will be changed for a feature film? Geeks tend to HATE change, and much like the uproar what was heard when the New52 was initially announced, fans who have an emotional stake in the life of Alan Scott are sounding off. I mean..the man had kids, so it is understandable. That relationship is a tangible thing for long time readers. Those same readers should be reminded that we are talking about the NEW52 universe though. This isn't your mom's comic universe, nor is it even yours. This is a new place with a new history. All bets are off, folks!
