NECA Dishes Out More Hunger Games, Predators and Jasons!

Just a quickie post before I run into New York for the day! NECA just dropped some pre-orders, adding additional action figures to lines you know and love and offering an official picture to one fiend we saw at Toy Fair 2012.

First up, those loveable, blood thirsty kids from Hunger Games! OK..so only one of them was really blood thirsty...but we all know there was only one way to survive the game. NECA gave us an excellent series 1 just in time for the movie's release and now present series 2 with Katniss and Peeta in their training outfits and Rue and Cato in their "battle" gear. We don't have additional images yet but you can be sure all will come with appropriate accessories.

Next, we get a look at three new Predators from Series 6 of the mega popular action figure series. Casual collectors will note that NECA have been implementing new articulation for these alien hunters, making them more sought after than ever before. Series 6 includes Warrior, Scout and Lost Predators, all from Predator 2.

Finally, we bring you an updated look at the Friday the 13th action figures of Jason Voorhees, natch'. Now you'll have a Part 3 and Part 4 Jason to add to your collections!

Asbury Park Comic Con Lands May 12th

These days, when you say Asbury Park, NJ, folks think Jersey Shore and Zombies. One drive through town and you'll agree it is the perfect location for most Troma films (take that as you will), but among the bitten up streets and closed down venues is a shining diamond called Asbury Lanes. This venue is doing its best to breathe some life back into this dusty town with Dr. Sketchy, Burlesque, films and the standard...punk rock bowling. NOW, the venue pulls a quick change and becomes the location for an actual, full blown Comic Con.

Asbury Park Comic Con will feature a wide variety of comic book & pop culture purveyors as well as many comic book creators, artists and illustrators from the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Comic fans will have a rare opportunity to meet the artists, who will be available to sign books that will be sold at each artist’s table. Commissioned sketches are also available from many of the artists for a fee. Special guests include:

• Eisner Award winner Evan Dorkin (creator of Milk & Cheese, co-creator of Beasts of Burden, writer for Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Shin Chan,)
• Sarah Dyer (creator of Action Girl, writer for such television shows as Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Shin Chan, Superman, and Batman Beyond)
• Michael Kupperman (creator of Tales Designed to Thrizzle and Mark Twain’s Autobiography 1910-2010)
• Jamal Igle (Super Girl, The Ray, Green Lantern Corps, and many other DC and Marvel books)
• Danny Hellman (cartoonist for New York Press, Time, Sports Illustrated, Screw, Village Voice, and many others)
• Steve Mannion (creator of Fearless Dawn published by Asylum Press)
• Fred Van Lente (co-creator of Cowboys and Aliens, writer for Marvel, Valiant, and Evil Twin’s Action Philosophers)
• Stephanie Buscema (illustrator for Web of Spider-Man, Girl Comics, Adventure Time Comic)
• Mike & Ming of the AMC television show Comic Book Men. The pair from Secret Stash and the podcast I Sell Comics will be doing a live broadcast from the Asbury Comic Con.

Also on hand:

CLIFF GALBRAITH • RYAN DUNLAVEY • CHARLES SOULE • DAVE RYAN • ERIC GRISSOM • PHIL SLOAN

The event features a unique location for a gathering of the comics community. The Asbury Lanes is a second home to punk rockers, hot rodders, artists, and bowlers. Built in 1963, the Lanes is like a time machine to a bygone era of low-brow bowling heaven and rock’n’roll refuge. The venue has hosted music legends and cult heroes such as Dick Dale, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Reverend Horton Heat, Mick Jones of The Clash, The Supersuckers, The Butthole Surfers, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, The Gaslight Anthem, Murphy’s Law and Bouncing Souls.

And yes...there will be booze!

So hit the Asbury Lanes this Saturday, May 12th to meet some excellent comic creators, buy some comics and say hi to me! I'll be the guy buried beneath 300 Mucus Tick action figures. Come buy one!! Visit Asburyparkcomicon.com for more info

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: The Avengers

WARNING: The images related toLink this article contain recreations of scenes from the movie. Sure, they are done with LEGO, but they may be considered spoilers none the less. You've been warned! Spoilery pics will be after my notes toward the bottom, so you can read a bit before you bail.

LEGO gave us a heaping helping of DC Super Heroes with an emphasis on the adorable, pudgy world of the Batman, and now, it is time for the MARVELS!! Taking advantage of the Avengers film release, LEGO busted out 4 building sets torn straight from the film (mostly). Here's the lineup (from largest to smallest)...

How To Marvel Party

Marvel brings together a group of 6 incredible superheroes to fight the battle mere mortals never could. In honor of the upcoming mega-movie, The Avengers ™, I wanted to share some tips on how to throw a celebration worthy of these classic caped crusaders—and take a party from blah to BLAMO!

· Invitations: Start your party off right with the perfect invitation. You can make your own postcard invitations with cardboard cut-outs of bright blue painted stars, and include the details about your party in a thin black marker. Decorate the front of each with classic comic book words like POW!, ZAP! And WAM!

· Décor: The Avengers bring together 6 epic superheroes. Create your own easy decorations with cardboard cutouts of spiders and paint them black, neon green head’s of The Hulk and classic American flags for Captain America and, throughout the party, use bold colored streamers, which will add some mystery to the room.

· Centerpieces: Choose your favorite Avenger and decorate the table around that character. Use lots of primary colors, since comic strips are usually blue, yellow and red. Print outs of comic book pages covered in contact paper make great placemats. Blanket your tables with these to tie the décor together and include stars, spiders and Hawkeye cut-outs on wooden sticks around the table with silver confetti.

· Music: Keep the music simple but fun. “Live to Rise,” the original song written for and appearing in the film is the first single from the Marvel Music/Hollywood Records release Avengers Assemble. The epic and cinematic video, featuring a searing live performance with film footage, was directed by Robert Hales (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janet Jackson, Kings of Leon, Justin Timberlake). Check out “Live To Rise”...

· Menu: Mini snacks such as cut-out tea-sandwiches make great finger food. Look for cookie cutters in shields, stars and spiders to create these treats. For Incredible Hulk themed beverages, create trays of green ice cubes by freezing water with green food color, and WOW! guests as their clear citrusy beverages transform color before their very eyes.

· Party Favors: As a parting gift, place a few Avenger designed cookies in a cellophane bag and close with a gold twist-tie – your guests can enjoy the party for days to follow with these treats!”

RECIPE

To celebrate the launch of the Avengers™ movie, in theatres May 4, Ms. Ricky Eisen, Founder and President of Events and Celebrations by Between the Bread, one of Manhattan’s most renowned and prestigious catering companies, and Cookie Panache, an e-commerce website offering hand decorated cookie gifts, is Sharing Her Tips On How to Decorate Superhero Cookies:

1. Whip up a batch of your favorite sugar cookie recipe and use a cookie cutter to make character cookies. They make Superhero cookie cutters in the shape of many Avengers heroes. You can also use any oval shaped cookie cutter and instead fill in the details with your decorating. Once your cookies are baked and cooled, you are ready to begin decorating.

2. You can make your own royal icing (See: How to Make Your Own Royal Icing included below) or use store-bought. Color with food coloring to achieve the various colors you want for decorating. We recommend green (for the Hulk), yellow, blue, black, white, and brown. Place each color in a piping bag.

3. Begin by outlining the cookie in your base color. (If you were starting with The Hulk, outline the entire shape in green. Color in your outline with green icing and cover the entire cookie. (You can actually use a paintbrush to “paint” your cookie.) Give the base a few minutes to dry and choose your next color. For The Hulk’s hair, outline his hairline in black and proceed to fill in with black icing. You can continue to draw features in and watch your character come to life.

How to Make Your Own Royal Icing

  • 3 egg whites, at room temperature. We prefer dehydrated egg whites, available at most supermarkets.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • food coloring (optional)

Mix above ingredients with a little warm water until smooth. Add food coloring.

Too Many Avengers

Not safe for work unless you turn the volume down reaaaaaal low.

Dragon Takes On Men in Black 3

Hot Toys aren't the only 12 inch action figure slingers out there! Dragon is back on the scene and is looking to re-make a name for themselves with a trio of new 12 inch action figures for Men in Black 3. So far, we have seen Agent K (2012), Agent K (1969) and Agent J 1:6th scale New Generation Life Action Figures! There are said to be around 30 points of articulation. Plenty of accessories will be packed in including the Noisy Cricket, Neuralizer, assorted guns and gadgets and Frank the Pug!

It is also worth mentioning that Enterbay ALSO have a MIB3 1:6th license, so prepare for a 12 inch action figure WAAAARRR!!! I suppose which ever Sideshow Collectibles carries will be the winner in the US, as that is the only way you'll be able to get your hands on these suckers short of importing them.

The Avengers Reviewed

"And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and super celebrities found themselves united against the same giant green screen. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand…like all those critics who thought a movie with multiple super heroes could never be done well!! Through the years, their roster has prospered, swapping out Bruce Banners once…or twice…but their glory has never been denied! Heed the call, then—for now, the Avengers Assemble! In 3D!"

This really should have been the movie synopsis.

It is an amazing time to be alive. A super rich super scientist has decided to defend us from evils our police forces can not. Our greatest human symbol of freedom has just been found ALIVE and ready to fight for us again! Even more astounding, Norse Gods have walked the Earth and have vowed to protect us in times of great need!! On the flip side, there were those two rampaging monsters that nearly leveled New York City. At least the one in the purple pants seemed to be on our side. Now a great evil is plotting our subjugation. Loki has finally come to Earth and a horde of alien creatures await his command. Our heroes are the only things standing between us and all encompassing destruction.

This is the reality Joss Whedon (and co) had laid out before him and tackled from the only perspective he could; that of a human being. On one side, we have Hawkeye, Black Widow and all of SHIELD whose powers begin and end with the tools at their disposal, their training and their resolve to continue fighting even in the face of insurmountable odds. Through moments spent with both Avengers as well as revealing talks from Nick Fury and the remarkably candid Agent Coulson, we are allowed every angle on any emotion we could possibly muster…from complete fanboy awe to abject, paralyzing terror. From another perspective, we watch events unfold through the eyes of those remarkable heroes, thrust into world quaking circumstances and confronting their own frailty as a result. Actually, for Thor and Bruce Banner, their concern is more for the fragility of the world around them. Both views encapsulate the quintessential element needed to create a hero. It isn’t great powers or technology at the end of the day. It is the willingness to fight for those who can not, even when it seems hopeless. This is the true heart of the Avengers film and without a doubt, where it shines the brightest.

Now that we’ve got the touchy feely items out of the way, let’s talk “bang for your buck”! The film makers manage to spin a tight tale, packing something interesting into every moment without overloading the viewer with too much stimuli all at once…which had to be a challenge with all these heroes in one place at one time and the actors that have made them real. The banter shifts from heroic bravado to punch line with precision timing worthy of a standing ovation. The action itself is jaw dropping and innovative with no extended scenes of battle or chase that seem out of place or just for the purpose of spectacle. Aside from the obvious good versus evil battle, you’ll also see Avenger on Avenger throwdowns beyond your wildest dreams. When not at each other’s throats, these heroes are given ample time to do what they do best, and it is all there on the screen. No “up close and way too personal” camera moves..no cut aways to save on CGI cash and ABSOLUTELY no shakey cam to keep the viewer off balance. We see the action from every conceivable angle and in the reflection of every surface the clever director could shoot off of. You will see every smash, shield throw, lightning strike, repulsor blast, trick arrow shot and basic kick to the side of an alien head, and at the end of it all, you’ll be startled you’ve been sitting there for 2 hours and 20 minutes! This is a beautiful movie with excellent design and an artistic eye all at once. That is pretty much a unicorn in the world of action films!

Acting performances are superb for the most part. Tom Hiddleston is finally able to give Loki the evil bent that makes the character undeniably appealing in comics. It seemed the film makers of Thor were trying hard to make Loki a pitiable character who didn’t do any mortal damage amid his back stabbing and conniving. In the Avengers, Loki looks upon us with no shortage of contempt and perhaps a dash of envy. His brother Thor loves these helpless pitiful creatures more than him. He will prove that no matter how hard Thor tries to defend them, these creatures will lay broken at his feet. It is an amazing performance. Downey delivers his Stark banter like a seasoned juggler, throwing quips and slinging sarcasm around any conversation in a way that is always funny and never annoying. More importantly, it is never TOO MUCH! Other characters even get to deliver jokes, whether it be through direct words or sight gags, and their delivery is just as crisp. A Games all around! Jackson as Nick Fury gives us the stern leader prepared to do anything to get the job done, even if it means he must lie to get there. Renner as Hawkeye presents an unrelenting soldier who can be pushed down into hell and return, battered and torn, asking what his next orders are. He offers an amazingly likable alternative to the usual unflinching soldier routine! Ruffalo as Bruce Banner plays the reluctant warrior to a T. He is slightly twitchy, a bit unhinged by what is lurking inside of him and has absolutely no ego in any action or word from his lips. I’m not 100% sold on him in the role, as I was completely in love with Norton in the last Hulk film..so it is going to take another full on Hulkathon to make me love him under the green skin. I’m positive I don’t even have to talk about the Hulk, himself, as reviewers across the globe are doing enough gushing for me. Suffice to say; when Hulk does what he does best, you’ll be bouncing in your seat like a 5 year old. He really does steal the movie!

My only acting complaint lies with Scarlett Johansson who is unbelievable as a Russian Spy and in my opinion, lacks the sex appeal to pull off the Black Widow character. Her monotone delivery just left me flat. Honorable mentions to Evans, Hemsworth and Gregg who play their parts to perfection to the extent that I have nearly nothing to say! It was as if they went right from shooting their own films (with Coulson running through all of them, of course) to jumping head first into the Avengers with a seamless transition, albeit showing that some time has passed. Evans is haunted by a past (and a world) that is long dead. Hemsworth does steely determination and boundless honor like no other. There is no sign of the happy go lucky mug breaker here! Gregg plays Coulson a bit sunnier and way less stone faced. After all, we’ve got Nick Fury for that. This allows him more leeway to brighten up the room and add a little levity to a situation. I love watching this guy work!

I’m in the unique position to speak on both the 2D and 3D versions of the film after nearly back to back viewings. I can now say, unequivocally, that the 3D, while pretty, doesn’t offer any spectacle more awe inspiring than it would be in 2D. This is a glorified view master effect at best. This could have been magnificent, what with all the aliens attacking New York City and The Hulk all but eating them. IMAGINE THAT IN MIND BLOWING 3D!! Surely, a missed opportunity.

To say The Avengers is a Marvel kid’s dream come true is an understatement. One could argue that I’m equally geeky for any comic book super hero smack down, but this is not the case. I know the difference between awesome and shite. The Incredible Hulk? Awesome. Dardevil? Complete and utter drek. Yay Iron Man…blech Spider-Man 3. It is clear Disney has their game face on when they make Marvel Movies and for that, I thank them from the bottom of my incredibly dorky heart. The Avengers had me grinning from ear to ear 80% of the time and laughing to the point I could not stop another 10%. I knew Whedon doing The Avengers was going to be something special. I’m just so damned happy at the end result. See this movie 16 times and assure Disney does things exactly right for the foreseeable future. I’m good for at least 3 more viewings. Do your part!

End Notes:

-I looked very closely and couldn’t find any Easter Eggs in the movie. Sad panda. Let me know if I am wrong!

-There are TWO post credits scenes. One comes up quick and one at the verrrry end. Stay for both!

X-O Manowar #1 Reviewed

In this nation of re-makes and re-imaginings, it should be of no surprise that the gods of the paneled page would see fit to resurrect some beloved, albeit somewhat obscure comic book heroes to see if they are a good fit with today's audience. To that end...coming to local comic shops in the coming months are Bloodshot, Harbinger, Archer and Armstrong and X-O Manowar, all from Valiant Comics! We got an advance peek at X-O, so here's the skinny...

It is a time of conflict when the rich get richer and the poor are just happy to be alive. Romans dominate the country side, leaving little room for the nomadic Visigoths who have already been driven from their own lands. With no where left to go, they are forced to clash with the superior might of the Roman war machine..which seem to have acquired powers beyond that of mortal men! Amid the chaos of war, alien visitors have taken advantage of the chaos to cover their clandestine activities. Young Aric of the Visigoths, headstrong and bold, has already sacrificed the life of many a soldier to his recklessness. He is not about to let his surviving brothers in arms be taken by creatures such as these!!

The set up is practically Cowboys and Aliens, with the Cowboys replaced by Visigoths! Give me a sword and armor tale over six shooters and dirt any day. From the look of the covers, we already know what is in store for Aric and it seems we are in for a killer time watching him get there. This first issue has a bit of a slow burn going on, setting up the canvas on which this story will play out, but doesn't skimp on the realities of ancient warfare and the carnage that comes with it. Aric's world is literally falling apart around him, so by the time he comes across otherworldly beings, he has nothing to lose. This makes him dangerous. The writing is serious but not weighed down with it's morose subject matter, creating a fast read that will torment you as you await issue 2! Consider this an intense tease. You are shown the man...and what he could be. Now you have to buy a ticket to the full ride to see what happens next! My prediction? Alien body parts floating through space. Aric is an angry, angry young man.

X-O Manowar hits comic shops Wednesday, May 2nd!
