Boys Go To Jupiter is a Wonderfully Weird Ride For All

Review by The CriX Files

On Wednesday, my awesome boss sent me a link for an animated feature called “Boys Go To Jupiter,” written and directed by Julian Glander (Summer Camp Island).

By Thursday, I had watched his feature film debut four times and am ready to buy it outright.

Here’s why.

BGTJ follows Billy5000 and his friends as they navigate their way through another year in Floridian suburbia. Teenaged Billy5000 is on a tear after dropping out of school and taking a gig delivering for Grubster, as he wants to earn $5000 before New Year’s Eve so he can leave town. But his mission is constantly interrupted by his goofball friends (Beatbox, Peanut, and Freckles) an old classmate (Rozario Dolphin aka Rosebud), her mother (Dr. Dolphin), and the cutest gelatinous alien you’ll ever meet named “Donut’ (who reminded me of a squishmallow).

Netflix’s ‘Haunted Hotel' Official Trailer Debut

Netflix Haunted Hotel
This month Netflix is celebrating its adult animated comedy slate and the release of Genndy Tartakovsky's Fixed (August 13) and Raphael Bob-Waksberg's Long Story Short (August 22) with a week of announcements and asset debuts for our upcoming series, giving fans a preview of the hilarious new movie and shows that are guaranteed to deliver plenty of laughs. For over a decade, Netflix has been making adult animated series, starting with the groundbreaking BoJack Horseman—hailed as one of the best TV shows of all time — which set a new bar for adult animated storytelling and paved the way for a string of daring and culturally-defining comedies, including Big Mouth, which celebrated its finale earlier this summer, F is for Family, Disenchantment, Tuca & Bertie and more. We’re excited to partner with visionary creators to bring our new slate of animated adult comedies to members around the globe. In addition to Genndy Tartakovsky's Fixed and Raphael Bob-Waksberg's Long Story Short, upcoming shows include Matt Roller's Haunted Hotel, releasing September 19; and Brutus Pink’s Mating Season, arriving in 2026.

Animated Comedy BOYS GO TO JUPITER Opening in Over 40 Theaters

Boys Go to Jupiter
Tomorrow, Cartuna and Irony Point kick off the release for Julian Glander’s surreal animated coming-of-age comedy Boys Go to Jupiter. A rare independent animated feature to receive a theatrical release, the film, which features a stacked cast of comedy icons and rising stars, opens August 8 in New York at the IFC Center and August 15 in Los Angeles at Laemmle Glendale, with a limited theatrical expansion to follow.

NPR’s Planet Money host Jack Corbett stars in his first film role as Billy 5000, a teenager in suburban Florida desperately trying to make $5,000 when his winter break is turned upside down by the arrival of a bizarre creature from another world. It mixes deadpan, absurdist comedy with lo-fi musical numbers—headlined by an enchanting original song by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Miya Folick, who voices Billy’s crush Rozebud—for an animated coming-of-age adventure destined for cult status.

The Naked Gun movie poster

At times like these, the world needs an unflinching force for good to stand before the twisted machinations of evil. To fight the good fight we call upon one man, stone faced and without fear, not because he is boundlessly courageous, but because he just doesn't know any better. It's time for a hero with no common sense at all...

Tales of innocence and magic, bravery and, sadly, virgins leading the majestic creatures to their doom. But what if every day, modern people came across this fabled creature? 50 50 shot they'd call either a circus, museum, or pharmaceutical company in the next 30 minutes...you know..after the glow wore off.

The Onion Gets a Serious Book About THE ONION

Funny Because It's True: How The Onion Created Modern American News Satire
In 1988, a band of University of Wisconsin–Madison undergrads and dropouts began publishing a free weekly newspaper with no editorial stance other than “You Are Dumb.” Just wanting to make a few bucks, they wound up becoming the bedrock of modern satire over the course of twenty years, changing the way we consume both our comedy and our news. The Onion served as a hilarious and brutally perceptive satire of the absurdity and horrors of late twentieth-century American life and grew into a global phenomenon. Now, for the first time, the full history of the publication is told by one of its original staffers, author and historian Christine Wenc. Through dozens of interviews, Wenc charts The Onion’s rise, its position as one of the first online humor sites, and the way it influenced television programs like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Funny Because It’s True peels back the layers to reveal how a group of young misfits from flyover country unintentionally created a cultural phenomenon.

SDCC 2024: STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS Ongoing Series Announced

IDW Publishing STAR TREK LOWER DECKS ongoing comic series 002
Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, IDW Publishing is incredibly proud to bring back STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS in an all-new ongoing series!  After earning a prestigious Eisner nomination for their work on STAR TREK: DAY OF BLOOD - SHAXS’ BEST DAY, writer Ryan North and artist Derek Charm reunite to kick off this can’t-miss comic ride featuring the beloved characters from the hit animated series.

This is a dream opportunity for the award-winning writer. “LOWER DECKS is my favorite STAR TREK, and I have seen every single STAR TREK there is to see, except for one episode I will never reveal,” commented North. “This raises the obvious question: will something in this comic contradict something that I missed in that one episode I never saw? Thankfully the answer is no, because the entire LOWER DECKS team - both at IDW and Paramount - has been so amazing - supportive, clever, brilliant. We're making a big funny heartfelt book with huge sci-fi ideas, important character developments, tons of that Trek flavor, and a bunch of jokes, too. If you love LOWER DECKS, you'll love this comic!

RiffTrax Live: Point Break This August

Fathom Events RiffTrax Live: Point Break
Join RiffTrax’s Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett as they crack jokes over “Point Break” in theaters nationwide through Fathom Events on Thursday, August 8 and Tuesday, August, 13th.

Don’t miss the return of RiffTraxLive with their take on possibly the most 90s movie ever made: “Point Break”! Undoubtedly the pinnacle of the “FBI infiltrates bank robber gang via surfing” genre, the laughs will be as extreme as the action!  Starring RiffTrax favorites Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, and Gary Busey, “Point Break” follows Johnny Utah as he embarks on an unconventional assignment: The FBI needs him to learn how to surf in order to stop the Ex-Presidents, a gang of armed robbers who will stop at nothing to make off with millions of dollars just in time to catch some sweet waves at high tide. Skydiving and Anthony Kiedis also feature prominently because, as previously mentioned, it was the 90s.
