MAN MOUNTAIN Share Final Pre-Album Single “ABSENCE / DESCENT”

Man Mountain
Southeast Michigan instrumental quartet Man Mountain have released “Absence / Descent,” the third and final single from their forthcoming album Threads of Another Life, due out July 24 via Spartan Records. The track offers one last glimpse into a record shaped by uncertainty, isolation, grief, and transformation — a sweeping seven-song collection that marks the band’s first full-length album in six years.

Built around towering crescendos, textured atmosphere, and a sense of emotional weight that never requires words, “Absence / Descent” captures one of the album’s most intense and cathartic moments. The track explores grief and loss through a dynamic arrangement that moves from uneasy restraint to a crushing finale, blending lo-fi rhythmic experimentation, electronic textures, and the heaviest ending the band has ever committed to tape.

“This song is about grief and loss — that sinking feeling that comes with it, like you’re falling into a black hole,” says guitarist Mike Reaume. “The whole second half is built around a riff I wrote one night just using a delay pedal as a looper. The first half came together later, and Jake really wanted the drums to be a sampled beat — we just didn’t know how to make it happen. Fortunately, a friend of ours was able to help us piece it together. In the studio, we also recorded it on real drums, ran them through a bunch of pedals to make them sound lo-fi and distorted, and blended that in with the cleaner electronic sample. It also has the heaviest ending of anything we’ve ever written.”

Threads of Another Life finds Man Mountain channeling the emotional aftermath of the pandemic era into seven expansive instrumental compositions that balance hope, grief, nostalgia, and acceptance. Recorded with producer Jeremy Wurst (Minor Movements, Tigerwine) and mastered by Ryan Smith (Caspian, Hammock, Hum), the album sees the band pushing further into a sound that blends post-rock dynamics, shoegaze haze, ambient detail, and cinematic emotional storytelling.

Originally formed by a group of brothers and longtime friends, Man Mountain have steadily evolved from emotional indie rock roots into one of the Midwest’s most compelling instrumental acts. On Threads of Another Life, that evolution reaches a new peak, resulting in a record that feels both intensely personal and strikingly universal.

The album’s title draws inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, specifically Frodo Baggins’ reflection, “How do you pick up the threads of an old life?” That question runs through the heart of the record, shaping an album concerned with what remains after profound change — and how we carry fragments of who we once were into whatever comes next.

With “Absence / Descent,” Man Mountain deliver a final preview that captures the emotional depth and sonic ambition of Threads of Another Life: a record born from upheaval, but ultimately reaching toward clarity, connection, and renewal.
