Meeeere days ago, we announced NECA was celebrating the Rocky Horror Picture Show Anniversary with NEW 7 inch action figures, kicking things off with Riff Raff and Dr. Frank N' Furter. Now, we've received some squidgy pics to go along with the news...pics JUST tight enough to show you that NECA is well on the ball, is cranking out excellent sculpts for this line with great likenesses and, unfortunately, none of your Rocky Horror Picture Show action figures will be able to participate in glorious plastic Kung Fu battles, as they can barely move.
So to recap...
Good News: Rocky Horror Picturere Show Action Figures coming this September for around 18 dollars a pop. 7 inch size puts them in scale with all your favorite McFarlane Movie Maniacs, SOTA Now Playing and NECA Cult Classics.
The New York Asian Film Festival is set to light the tiny island of Manhattan aflame with a hefty selection of mind blowing Asian films you won’t see anywhere else this June 25th to July 8th. I like to call it Film Geek Christmas. This year’s schedule is jam packed with insane offerings you won’t want to miss, so we’ve taken the liberty of pulling out our top picks for the horror inclined AKA, fans of the fucked up, grind house and blood splattering sort. Dive right in! Once you’ve spotted the films you want to catch, the full schedule can be found RIGHT HERE.
Alien VS Ninja - In medieval Japan, no one can hear you scream. And no one can prepare you for the arrival of a great, big, honking rubber alien who wants to party space-invader-style, which means tearing off heads and ripping out intestines. This sick extraterrestrial freak even wants to impregnate our species with its hideous jelloid babies. It is unstoppable. It is un-killable. It is unbeatable. But it’s not ninja-proof.
Blades of Blood - It’s a powerhouse team-up. Lee Joon-Ik, director of King & Clown, the top-grossing Korean movie of all time. Hwang Jung-Min, an actor who was originally told he was too ugly to be in movies, but who has gone on take home eight “Best Actor” awards in nine years. The result? A muscular swashbuckler about a blind swordsman trying to stop his friend from leading a bloody coup, it’s a classy epic full of ringing steel and nail-biting showdowns. Director Lee Joon-Ik will be at the screening!
Bodyguards & Assassins - Set in turn-of-the-century Hong Kong, B&A is an old school, all-star extravaganza the likes of which hasn’t been seen in decades. A ragtag bunch of volunteer bodyguards sign up to protect Dr. Sun Yat-Sen from assassination on his trip to Hong Kong. Chance of survival: low. Nominated for more Hong Kong Film Awards than any other movie in history, it broke the bank in Hong Kong and busted the box office wide open in China. More importantly, Donnie Yen fights a horse.
CHAW - Just when you thought it was safe to go back to eating pork, here comes Chaw. A bacon-flavored version of The Host, this flick is a riff on Jaws only with a giant killer pig instead of a giant killer shark and, probably, a lot more pot got smoked while the script was being written. If you’re looking for straight-up horror you won’t find it here, because this is far more like a black comedy from Joe Dante (Gremlins) than a serious monster movie from Steven Spielberg.
Death Kappa - the internet, cell phones, satellites. True. But also, the Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, the Chupacabra. Science, but also monsters. Progress, but also monsters. We can destroy the germs that cause bad breath, yes, but still: monsters. A double-barreled blast of 80’s VHS nostalgia, DEATH KAPPA is the ultimate in ridonkulous, lo-fi giant monster mayhem! The kappa is a frisky folk spirit but a fight with weaponized fishmen turns this kappa into a kaiju and soon Tokyo is nothing more than toe jam. Brought to you by an over-qualified cast and crew who really should know better, DEATH KAPPA is adorable and horrible, all at the same time.
Doman Seman - Imagine A Hard Day’s Night if it was about Aleister Crowley instead of the Beatles and you’ve got an idea of what director Go Shibata is up to in his hard-rocking occult film. Yakuza Magicians! Armies of psychic children! Zombie swarms in Kyoto! Hot Boys vs. the Homeless! The Human Enslavement Project! Doman Seman will kick down your doors of perception like a psychedelic SWAT team. Director Go Shibata will be at the screenings!
Kung Fu Chefs - Sammo Hung likes to do two things: cook food and kick ass. Fortunately for audiences, there’s finally a movie that lets him do both. Whether he’s butchering an entire pig in one chop, slicing ginger, cooking fish or beating up Bruce Leung, Sammo is right in his wheelhouse, dishing out kitchen tips and iron fists in equal measure. Made in China for about $1.95, Kung Fu Chefs is the kind of cracked exploitation classic that the Hong Kong film industry used to turn out in its sleep back in the early 90’s. Come hungry. Star Sammo Hung will be at the 10:15pm screening on Saturday, June 26!
Merantau - Indonesia’s first martial arts movie in fifteen years, this is a slab of B-movie genius rooted in the traditions of Indonesia’s martial art, the very spiritual style called silat. In Merantau, silat expert, Iko Uwais, leaves his family to go to the big city where he discovers a bunch of Eurotrash running a human trafficking ring. How does he handle it? By putting them in body casts, jumping off buildings and beating them with pipes. Merantau has come to New York to elevate your consciousness and kick your ass. Should you resist one, it will accept the other.
Mutant Girls Squad - At 2009’s New York Asian Film Festival, action choreographer and director Tak Sakaguchi (Be a Man! Samurai School), director and special-effects genius, Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and cherubic pervert, Noboru Iguchi (Robogeisha), got drunk and vowed to make a movie together. One year later, it’s here. A bizarre take on the X-Men, it comes at you fast and furious and if something crosses the line between good and bad taste, don’t worry: five minutes later you’ll see something new that makes the previous transgression seem downright quaint. Presented with Japan Cuts: Festival of Contemporary Japanese Cinema. Directors Noboru Iguchi and Yoshihiro Nishimura will be at the screening!
Raging Phoenix - Jeeja Yanin, Thailand’s only female action star, burst onto the scene with Chocolate and now she’s back! In Raging Phoenix she learns how to combine muay thai beatdowns with sick B-boy moves. Truly jaw-dropping, and completely weird (the plot centers on a gang of kidnappers who steal women for their scent) it’s full of high-impact kicks, lethal breakdancing and the discovery that the greatest martial art of all is “Drunken Muay Thai.” Come drunk, leave happy!
The Storm Warriors - This is the closest cinema has ever come to putting Chinese martial arts comic books, with all of their surreal techniques and freaky superpowers, on the big screen. From the very first frame the choirs are wailing like a death-metal concept album times infinity, and every shot is a blast-beat drum solo, every edit is a power chord and when the characters fight it’s like two planets smashing into one another. It’s a special-effects extravaganza where swords are so powerful they cut the weather in half and ultimate weapons are made from the spinal columns of dead gods. Actor Simon Yam will be at the Noon screening on Sunday, June 27!
Yatterman - Takashi Miike is Japan’s most outrageous director and this is his biggest box office hit of all time. A slyly hilarious send-up of kiddie show, Yatterman, it’s like a self-aware, satirical update of “Scooby-Doo” only with giant robots, leather-bondage-clad femme fatales and a pile of all the schoolgirls in Japan. Hilariously stupid, but insanely smart, it’s exactly the giant robot movie you thought Miike would make. Cool enough for the kids but messed up enough for their parents.
After years of begging Diamond Select to create more characters that will compliment the Marvel Legends line, we've finally got ourselves a new Juggernaut!!!! I'll allow you 5 minutes of celebration now.
To continue, Marvel Select makes the big bulky guys like no other company, so it is a no brainer for us to be constantly moaning at them to make our favorite Marvel Comics powerhouses into lovable plastics. Further, since they sell straight to comic shops, they can make obscure chatacters and not worry much about them selling, since Marvel Legends fans have absolutely nothing else to buy these days!! I laugh..and then I cry a little. With Juggernaut, we get a character sorely in need of an update, hopefully in a scale that will make us fall out of our Incredible Hulk bean bag chairs, AND recognizable to the movie geeks, since he did have an appearance or 2 in X-Men United. TRIPLE WIN!! Sculpting by Gentle Giant and paints by the legendary Eddie Wires make this a dream project we hope to see a repeat of over and over and over until the entire Marvel Universe is finally COMPLEEEEETE!! Here's the skinny...
A Diamond Select Release! Sculpted by Gentle Giant! The ranks of the best-selling Marvel Select line expand to include one of the deadliest mutants ever — the unstoppable Juggernaut! Sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios and standing a massive 7" tall, the Juggernaut is the latest release in DST’s in-scale, oversized Marvel Select figures! Charles Xavier's half-brother, Cain Marko, is ready to join Magneto in the fight against the X-Men — and anyone else that stands in their way! Featuring Marvel Select’s standard 16 points of articulation, The Juggernaut — and the sans-helmet chase variant figure — are the textbook definition of “unstoppable”!
Expect Juggers to hit stores this August for the low low price of 20 beans. Make this a sell out and show Hasbro that we are dying for new Marvel figures that look as if they can step on their G.I. Joes.
And just because I'm a full service geek, here's a list of figures I'd love to see Marvel Select tackle next...
The Wrecking Crew Luke Cage Terrax Dragon Man Blastaar Apocalypse Ultron Doc Samson Titanium Man Iron Clad Volstagg Hydro Man Warlock New School Venom (believe it or not, he hasn't been done properly) Dormammu S'ym Super Adaptoid Mimic Sauron
Yikes. With a release date in the Summer of 2011, we've got a whoooole year to hate on this idea..even with Howlin' Mad Azaria in a Gargamel costume.
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours — in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.
Honestly, the only thing keeping my friends on board is Neil Patrick Harris. I'm not entirely sure why.
Just a sneak preview of the card art. There should be some slight color shifting, but I'm hoping the tentacles will be sufficiently visible back there. The CGI Mucus Tick is just in there so you can see what the whole thing should look like. The actual figure will fill up way more of the package and wind up behind the sticker slightly as well. Pre-orders are upNOWWW on the following sites -
Its a little baffling that this has only been done once before, and even then, it wasn't the greatest of attempts. In fact, the original Rocky Horror action figures were so bad, I sold mine off years ago...and this is coming from a guy who must have seen Rocky over 100 times. Now, NECA drops a stealthy bombshell on us with pre-orders popping up across the interwebs for, what I hope will be, the first two figures in a series.
From Big Bad Toystore: Celebrate 35 years of the cult classic motion picture The Rocky Horror Picture Show with 2 highly detailed movie-accurate action figures! Tim Curry's Dr. Frank 'N Furter and Richard O'Brien's Riff Raff are sculpted at 7" tall and are fully poseable. Clamshell packaging.
This set will include the following figures:
1x Dr. Frank 'N Furter 1x Riff Raff
List price is 33.99 for the set, making each figure around 100 dollars. I suck at math, so you do it. Expect your local toy retailers to be doing the Time Warp again this October!
Maybe a little bit of both? Either way, the title kind of sucks. Would they call a Spider-Man project Spider-Man: I Am The Spider-Man? No. It sounds dumb. Rant over.
I tend to hate motion comics as it allows companies to crank out comic adaptations with very little real movement in the characters and action and sub-par voice acting slapped onto it. I'm still asking people when Spider-Woman turned into a Brit. Now, it seems, the Black Panther animated series is seeing the light of day in the states, minus all the fanfare of being the first positive role model for African American children in this medium. Sorry..I guess Cage, Black Falcon, Jon Stewart Green Lantern, Black Lightnting, Firestorm, Steel, Brother Voodoo, Storm, Vixen, War Machine, Blade, Spawn, Shadow Man, Goliath, Static Shock, Bishop, Omega Man, Mace Windu, etc, do not count. Ahhh..the hype machine. It also seems they are now calling it a motion comic, when in all actuality, it probably falls somewhere in between motion comic and full on animated series. Whatever they'd like to call it, it looks like one hell of a ride! Take a look...
Marvel Knights Animation is proud to announce Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther?, a twelve-episode, weekly, all-new series debuting on iTunes, Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Zune and PlayStation®Network on June 23rd.
Inspired by the acclaimed graphic novel from respected filmmaker/producer Reginald Hudlin and legendary comic book artist John Romita Jr, Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther? introduces viewers to the Black Panther, the warrior king of Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation in the heart of Africa. As outside forces conspire to plunder this proud nation, the Black Panther will face his greatest threats as he meets Klaw, the man who murdered his father.
“The positive responses to news of the show have been so overwhelming, it’s great to finally make the Black Panther series available to everyone,” said Hudlin. “Audiences get caught up on many levels – seeing John Romita Jr’s art come to life; the quality of the voice work by an award winning cast; the boldness of the politics, the music and humor. But see it for yourself!”
Romita Jr added, “The reaction by any person, upon viewing footage of a black panther, is universal: Awe. There is no more elegant a creature on the face of the planet. The creation of the character by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, in a turbulent political time, maintained that quality. Reggie Hudlin's updated version follows that and adds an amazing, cinematic flair to it. In my opinion, reading, and now viewing, the Black Panther series is much akin to witnessing a panther in person. Enjoy the elegance of the story, the elegance of the actors, their voices, their words, and....the imagery.”
This exciting series also features the voices of major celebrities including Academy Award-nominee Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther; Jill Scott as Storm, Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri; Alfre Woodard as both Dondi Reese and Queen Mother; Carl Lumbly as Uncle S’Yan; and comics legend Stan Lee in a special role.
Not because its dirty...and not because its from a raving lunatic..but because it is subtle in the way it is trying to jedi mind trick me to do.....something. I expect this to continue to unfold for 6 months at the very least.

“Dudebro™ — My Shit Is Fucked Up So I Got to Shoot/Slice You II: It’s Straight-Up Dawg Time” is set for release this summer for PCs and Macs.
“Dudebro™ II” follows the exploits of elite soldiers John Dudebro™ and his sidekick Habemus Chicken as they chase anyone who threatens the world’s brodiocity — an arms dealer, a voodoo priest, an evil glee club and more. Along the way, they’ll have to fight through swathes of expendable enemies, including aliens, zombies and even yetis.
Featuring the vocal talents of Jon St. John, the legendary voice actor of Duke Nukem*, “Dudebro™ II” both parodies and pays homage to some of mainstream video gaming’s most prevalent tropes: super-macho protagonists, excessive violence and profanity, chauvinistic overtones and rampant immaturity. But it also pays respect to old-school gaming, with power-ups, pixel art story sequences and ridiculous boss fights.
Although “Dudebro™ II” is the first in the series, it has the number two in its name because sequels are always more awesome than original games — as all hardcore gamer dudes know.
The game is built on the Unity 3D engine, which can be run within any browser on PC or Mac, or run offline. “Dudebro™ II” will be a free download when it is launched on www.dudebro2.com.
Imagine you are watching a CGI, super realistic Care Bears movie (following the success of the Smurfs movie, of course) and instead of the usual love and justice tale, this film is a story of REVENGE!! Naughty Bear is a lot like that, only without the sweetness. Prepare for giant barrel loads of mean spirited AWESOME.
Naughty Bear is a grisly psychopath slicing a path of manipulation and terror across a cartoon world of otherwise blissful teddy bears on the Island of Perfection. The other bears have gotten away with blaming Naughty Bear for everything that has gone wrong on the island—until now. Naughty Bear tells the tale of one demented teddy bear’s ruthless efforts to torment and harass the inhabitants of the Island of Perfection. Gamers will engage in sadistic scuffles with hapless stuffed animals from all corners of the toy box, waging psychological warfare on unsuspecting victims. Hell-bent on exacting revenge against everything cute and fluffy.
It's the comic book bad ass VS the toy store terrors! The pugilistic plastic puppets VS the wicked waylaying westerner!! LET'S GET IT ON!!!
Toy Story 3 - Flashing forward 10 years or more, Andy is on his way to college, leaving Woody and his pals to one of two fates. The attic or donation to the local daycare center. In a twist of accidental fate, off the the daycare center they go where all seems like toy Eden..until the toddlers come!! PLASTIC CARNAGE!! I have to make a note that, ever since the second movie when they defined how much Woody, his horse and Jessie are worth, I twitch whenever I see them walking around on pavement..or dirt..or the air...much less being gnawed on by little drooling humans. This was true HORROR for me. Without giving away the plot, not all is what it seems at the daycare center, so the film turns into a caper movie with the toys trying to find their way home again. The only change this time around is the odd number of "evil" characters and the completely random and almost disturbing nature of some of the circumstances and scenes! This movie is so weird, I found myself half covering my eyes at times, not knowing what the hell I was watching. I can only imaging these scenes might scare kids a little!
The oddness of the story line didn't detract from my enjoyment one bit. The pace is swift and the comedy non-stop, with imagery so unexpected I found myself laughing harder as I shook my head in disbelief. This might be a little intense for smaller kids, but Toy Story 3 is every bit as fun as a Toy Story movie should be and doesn't disappoint one bit. The 3D, however, is inconsequential, so don't feel that you NEED to see the movie in this format for maximum enjoyment. Honestly, I don't recall anything coming at me, causing me to duck down in startled amazement. I even forgot we were watching in 3D about 10 minutes in. Get out to the movies this weekend and give Toy Story 3 the well deserved #1 spot, but leave the glasses behind.
Jonah Hex - Jonah Hex (Brolin) is a man haunted by the death of his wife and child at the hands of the insidious Quentin Turnbull (Malkovich). Scarred horribly by Turnbull and left for dead, Hex is saved by friendly Native Americans who yank him back, inches from the here after and thus, changed by having seen the other side. Now, Hex can communicate with the dead with a touch and roams the dusty trails as an outlaw bounty hunter with a taste for a prostitute named Lilah (Fox) and a scar across his mug you’d never forget.
The rest of this tale is either irrelevant or makes no sense. Hex believes Turnbull to be dead, which is reversed minutes later; a pointless plot fact since we all know Turnbull is the main bad guy before we even enter the theater. Hex’s “talking to the dead” gimmick stands as the only pleasing effect in the whole film but things revealed during these moments, while pushing Hex toward the bad guy, seem forced and could have been easily replaced with some bar drunk pointing in the right direction…but what fun would that be?! The dialogue falls out of actors mouths with the pacing of a sub-par community theater performance, as if they were all told to sit down and watch Silverado before the shoot as their only reference. The result is agonizing with a series of peripheral characters standing around like civil war reenactors or those odd puppets in the Hall of Presidents, pitching their lines at main characters who seem to yawn back at them.
SPEAKING of acting! While watching Jonah Hex, you’d think the film was shot in a single week with actors given 2 days to read the script and cue cards to cover the rest. Brolin’s mangled mouth piece assures most of his lines are delivered through gritted teeth, rendered unintelligible. This makes his scenes with Megan Fox extra hysterical, as her delivery is extra mumbly with a sort of drawl, which isn’t to be confused with a southern drawl. She just drawn her words out and makes every word sound gnarly. It’s not sexy. John Malkovich slow walks from scene to scene with the intensity of someone performing a task they were talked into by a cousin who nagged them for a solid year. I’d swear he doesn’t change his facial expression even once and delivers his lines with a softness you reserve for ordering desert after a pleasing meal. This leaves Michael Fassbender as the maniacal, heavily tattoo’d Burke who dances through every scene and twirls a giant knife as if he studied the art since childhood. Fassbender seems the only person behaving as if he’s in a crazy, comic adapted western with super natural overtones and comes off more like a Robocop nemesis than cohort to Turnbull, who is most likely sleeping somewhere behind him. Special mentions should be given to Wes Bently and Will Arnett who are so miscast and odd, even with the small roles given, that they may as well be in a Saturday Night Live skit spoofing the movie. Finally, a tip of my hat to Tom Wopat (yes, that Duke boy) who acts his ass off despite the stupidity happening around him and succeeds in proving he deserves more movie roles.
80 minutes feel like 2 hours as this dull fantasy rolls along with lame, unlikely action, horrible writing and zero atmosphere. If you consider a red tinted “dream sequence” that replays throughout the film as cutting edge cinematography, then I suggest you partake in any one of a number of the SyFy channel’s “original” movies and save some cash. When I saw the names Neveldine and Taylor come up in the credits as screen writers I nearly yelled LIAR!! This complete mess of a film could not be the work of the guys who brought us the Crank films and Gamer. Jonah Hex lacks the quirkiness and risk taking that is the backbone of those films. Jonah Hex has to be a hack job and after cutting the meat to ribbons in an attempt to form a coherent story line, we are left with 80 minutes of sweaty boredom, laughable action gimmicks and an “ultimate weapon” that will remind the more geeky among us of the Dragon Balls from Dragon Ball Z. They, too, make no sense.
I went into Jonah Hex with very low expectations, my Spidey senses telling me this may hurt a bit. I left rubbing my eyes, shaking myself awake for the ride home and muttering curses to myself. Save yourself the agony and skip this movie all together.
I was going to write NEW MOTHER FUCKING SCOTT PILGRIM TRAILER OF DOOOOOM!! But I changed my kind at the last minute. I'm fickle.
Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams...literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.
As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.
