My Ewok Horde Grows

I...have a problem.

I am a recovering army builder. I used to buy multiples of any nondescript army character so that someone like Red Skull would have the might of Hydra behind him and Yoda could be flanked by Clones in a skittles array of color highlights. There's Stormtroopers, Snowtroopers, Sandtroopers, Scout Troopers, Battle Droids, Gungan Warriors, Endor Rebels, Hoth Rebels, Gondorian Swordsmen, Easterlings, Uruk-Hai, Battle Trolls, Minotaurs, Dragons, Shield Agents and on and on into plastic infinity. The folks on Collection Intervention ain't got nuthin' on a dedicated army builder!

Droid Factory Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

For a fan of toys (large or small..the fans, not the toys), there is nothing more fun than the words "Build your Own" ...well...anything! When that model is applied to something folks geek out over, the mind swims with possibilities. Disney knows of your lust for creation and will soon provide you with the tools to assemble your own droid army!

The Droid Factory experience will be launching during Star Wars Weekends 2012. Fans will be able to build and name their own R-series Astromech droid action figures. Developer Cody Hampton said this experience was in development for three years!

“We began discussing the Droid Factory in 2009,” explained Cody. “We know that personalization is an important aspect of the popular build-your-own light saber experience. We felt the same thing could be done with action figures but on a much larger scale.”

Large scale indeed – the Droid Factory has 71 different pieces to create the 3 ¾-inch figures! To get started, guests chose a dome, a body and legs offered in a variety of colors and styles (Cody said that availability of various parts and colors may change). There are optional third legs and novelty hats that can be added.

“We wanted lots of options for [the Droid Factory],” continued Cody. “There are literally thousands of combinations making each droid unique. Guests can also name their droids with sticker sheets provided at checkout.”

Three domes – R6, R8 and R9 – were created exclusively for this experience at Disney Parks. Cody also told me the multi-colored ear hats were inspired by Jedi Mickey’s Astromech droid, R2-MK. Four additional hats arrive later this summer including a Goofy hat, a pirate hat (YAY pirate hat!), a fedora and a Yoda cap.

Droids will be sold either in single or dual packs (the latter has a value price). They can also be used with the playsets we’ve created like the Starspeeder 1000.

“My favorite droid is named R7-C4,” Cody continued. “He has an orange body like my favorite clone trooper, Commander Cody. He wears the Yoda cap as a nod to the actual hat created in the 1980s when I fell in love with Star Wars.”

Brad built R9-EIU in honor of Eastern Illinois University, where he completed his bachelor’s degree. He explained, “[The droid] would have been great to have around while I was in school.”

To kick things off, allow me to hog the stage for a moment and pimp a selection of auctions plucked from the depths of my OWN DARK HEART!!! Rarg. NYCC: Day 1 Kicked My Ass, But We've Got Hasbro and Mattel!

But I do it out of love, so my butt will survive. Conni, my second unit photographer is a freaking rock star and has turned in over a thousand pics. She may have shot more than me today. SHOCKER. I am humbled and ashamed. Got home a bit late and had to do the dump and sorting first, but we've battled through the pain and posted a few choice folders to the Flickr. Here's the skinny...
Link
It all started with an (admittedly) rather pathetic exclusives selection you'll find at the bottom of the pile. I blame the companies for making exclusives and not telling anyone about them, but I was just lazy about it. CLICK HERE for the NYCC overview with separate folders for the most awesome of those exclusives. This should also be the link you bookmark, as it gives you an aerial view of the show.

Hasbro may have showed a ton of new toys at San Diego Comic Con, but that doesn't mean they hit the big apple without premium plastics at the ready. I managed to get an awesome viewpoint of those figures you wanted a closer look at from the Marvel Universe line as well as pretty zooms of the new Marvel Legends including Daken, Madam Masque, Thunderball, Fantomex, Bucky Captain America, Arnim Zola and more! We also found an 8 inch Destroyer to tower over your Thor as well as a Frost Giant to knock around, and the stars of the case...THE AVENGERS! This grouping includes your first really good look at Hulk, who seems a bit bland in action figure form. Still, I'm sure I'll love every second of screen time he gets.

Also booted up for New york Comic Con 2011 coverage is Hasbro Star Wars, which I hear includes more than a couple of items that mysteriously disappeared from the cases, and Hasbro's amazing G.I. Joe figures and multi-packs that I can't stop raving about. DREADNOKS MULTI PACK!! SLAUGHTER'S MARAUDERS MULTI PACK!!! The geeky mind spins.

I had just enough awake time to squeeze out two folders for Mattel including DC Universe Classics, 2 packs and METRON, the first of those subscription figures along side the long awaited Larfleeze action figure!! Stop paying 100 bucks for that DC Direct one on ebay, kids!! Before I collapsed into a heap, I launched the WWE folder so you can get your testosterone driven he-man fix. You're welcome.

WANT MORE?? Well fuck, you should have been watching my Twitter this morning!! Go get em.

Thanks to Matt Booker for ridiculous conversation, Conni & Dave for awesome back up and Zach Oat for having wonderful old timey mutton chops. More tomorrow!!

SDCC: Cartoon Network's Panels and Signings

This has been an awesome year for cartoons. I could finally wash the horrific taste of bland tween cartoons away with incredible nonsense like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Amazing World of Gumball and even the further adventures of Scooby-Doo and Loony Tunes!! The Land of Ooo comes to Comic Con and to the streets of San Diego with an Adventure Time themed booth, Pizzeria and the first-ever Adventure Time Parade.

Based on the hit show, Cartoon Network’s booth will feature a massive one-of-a-kind inflatable of series star Jake, with Finn and Lady Rainicorn along for the ride. Fans will be able to take photos set in the Land of Ooo with Adventure Time characters, collect five exclusive Adventure Time buttons, participate in an open casting call to audition as their favorite Adventure Time character and attend a star-studded panel filled with live readings, giveaways, and more!

Also, brand ambassadors throughout the Gaslamp District will distribute coupons for special Happy Hour free food and drink each day.

Every day during the convention an Adventure Time parade featuring Finn, Jake, Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Lumpy Space Princess, and Lady Rainicorn will wind its way through the Gaslamp District!

Other Cartoon Network series will be showcased at San Diego Comic-Con International with talent and giveaways at convention panels including the exciting action of Ben 10, Generator Rex, Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, ThunderCats, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the hilarious antics of comedy hits like Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, The Problem Solverz, The Looney Tunes Show and many more!

Fans can also tune into Cartoon Network for “Cartoon Network’s Big Fan Weekend” featuring Andrew W.K. (host, Destroy Build Destroy) interviewing popular Cartoon Network show creators and talent live from the convention floor! All weekend long viewers tuning in to Cartoon Network will get first looks at upcoming new movies and series as well as exclusives and sneak peeks of their favorite returning series.
