The Star Trek: Into Darkness App

As a thank you to the Star Trek: Into Darkness crew for fulfilling a certain wish to a friend of ours, I'll be posting every scrap of news Paramount sends over on the topic. This could get amusing.

Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom Inc., and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its subsidiary Qualcomm Labs, Inc., today announced that Gimbal™ context awareness technologies will be used to deliver exclusive content and advanced real world game experiences for the “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” application based on the upcoming movie from J.J. Abrams.

These cutting edge technologies are being showcased in a never before-seen way and will enable users to automatically engage with a wealth of movie related materials by utilizing their real-life surroundings to auto-complete integrated missions by employing audio scan, geo-location recognition, and image recognition functionality powered by Qualcomm Vuforia.  The “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” app will launch at the end of January.  Qualcomm’s Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs made the announcement today during his keynote address at the International CES show in Las Vegas.

If Funko are the undisputed rulers of ridiculously cute pop culture icons in vinyl, then NECA are the champions of bringing your favorite movie heroes to life in outstanding 7 inch plastics. Now comes the update...

Stop Motion HALO and WOW Mega Bloks

Two things we love here at Idle Hands...animation and construction toys! Apparently Mega Bloks has been exploiting these loves for some time now, right under our noses, and we never knew it. Ahh..the geek universe...she is too vast to see the end of it. At any rate, when we discovered these stop motion epics, we had to share. The HALO bit is pretty lengthy as it is multiple parts spliced together, so be prepared. The World of Warcraft bit is the last episode in a series, but it has a recap at the beginning, so we figured you'd get the gist. If you want to see the WHOOOOLE thing, I'm sure there are plenty of links at the tail end of the vids.

The Evil Dead Trailer of Doooom...#2

I wonder how many nerds who were bitching about them remaking Evil Dead are now in virtual line behind me waiting to say "Sorry Dude!" to Bruce Campbell. .....it's going to be a long fucking line...

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Evil Dead in theaters April 12th.

The Best LIVE Televised NYE2013 Broadcast

And the award goes to KDOC of LA. As a fan of B movies, we, as a group, tend to think the worse a movie is, the more it transcends the badness and evolves into some glorious, hideous monstrosity you can not look away from..and if you're lucky..it get's even funnier. The harder the acting, the more fantastic the outcome. This....is not that. We will call this a hurricane of ineptitude that can only be explained with a theory that someone over there must have been sending a giant sized F U to his bosses and let the whole damn thing fall apart. If there were Wayans randomly inserted in the crowd shots, I would have thought this was a genius giant sized trailer for their latest upcoming spoof movie. Instead, we get Jamie Kennedy struggling to keep it together before embracing the chaos and his cast of misfit Hollywood toys..banged up..drugged up..and generally fucked up. Let's watch the highlights.

Am I wrong or was that closing fight between a dude and a woman?? Welp..that's definitely the way to end that party. Whoever gets me a full recording of this apocalyptic train wreck gets a box of senseless but awesome stuff from me.

RISE OF THE DC DOMOS

A press release so awesome, I'm running it beat for beat. And go.

Q: What do you get when you cross a Domo and a DC Comics Superhero?
A: See Below...It's epic.

Deadly Spawn..THE ALBUM!!

Coming straight from Planet MONDO...you know..that planet that releases limited edition items at 5:04 that sell out by 5:05! Those evil bastards started up a record label for the sole purpose of cranking out limited edition vinyl soundtracks you will shank your best friends to buy...but more than likely hear about..miss the on sale 30 seconds and then have it haunt your dreams. Their first two releases were for "Maniac" and "The Beyond", and "Drive" is slipping off the presses as we speak. And now...

We’re happy to announce that our first release for 2013 is being dropped this Friday, January 4th. This release just happens to be one of my favorite monster movies of all time and the packaging features amazing original art by Phantom City Creative. Here is THE DEADLY SPAWN!!

Dead Man Down

Simple..intense..right to the point. I like it! DEAD MAN DOWN is an action thriller that stars Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace as two strangers whose mutual desire for revenge draws them together and triggers an escalating trail of mayhem. The film, which also stars Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper, marks the American theatrical debut of director Niels Arden Oplev (the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) Hit up http://blooddemandsblood.com/ for more info and updates.

The 1st Four Minutes of Warm Bodies

What can the first 4 minutes of a movie do for you? Set a tone...make an impact..make you laugh..make your eyes buldge out of your head from the awesome exploding across your screen. Four minutes can be a very long time to pitch a movie to the public at large. Let's see what sort of impact Warm Bodies makes on you...

The 2012 Roundup

I don't think I've done this the same way twice, and I'm so damn tired right now my creativity is at a 3, so let's just go with stats...

In Blogspot's internal stats, you can't ask it for yearly numbers, but happily, if you click All Time, more than 5 of 2012's articles made the cut. It was a year of unexpected scoops...some expected hits and some that may surprise you.

#5: Toy Fair 2012: Mattel Monster High - I'd taken the horrors of Monster High over to Dread Central, and Idle Hands, when we first discovered the YouTube animated clips. Since then, you could say the concept has exploded, but our look at Monster High items for 2012 came at the height of a scalper feeding frenzy. With every light shipment of the mega popular dolls came 3 to 4 portly middle aged opportunists who would clear the shelves, assuring a high public demand and with it, COLLECTOR RAGE!! These days, the stores are fully stocked, the fans happily hunt for their favorite high school horrors, and Mattel hopes to get, at the very least, another year of creepy dolly love.
